A better example may have been Planetside. It merged US servers at one point. Although it is still going.

[/ QUOTE ]i can not really see if we get more or less servers, that it means a game iss in trouble. as long as it don't say game is closing here your refund i be happy. But i got more important things to worry about then a server closer or opens up

I didn't understand that, but I think you cannot understand why people think a game is in trouble if there is a server merge.

Well, whether you can understand it or not does not matter. When a game reduces its server count, it is perceived as meaning that the game cannot sustain its population. Even if the game does not fail, it stops gaining new customers, it gets bad publicity, it loses even more customers, and it does not grow.

The first people to leave are usually the ones who demanded that the servers be merged because they still can't find teams on their new, merged server.

Actually, a better example would have been ANY game that has more than one server. EvE always has been, and always was, designed to run serverless. It's totally useless to try to use it as a comparison with games that have multiple servers.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well yes

Although Planetside did the whole merge thing and hasn't seemed to suffer for it.

Actually subscriptions picked up for a good while as people came back to enjoy the larger battles (And get blasted by my Magrider. Suck it Emerald [censored]!) . In fact I can't think of any game with a stable population dying off due to a server merge.

Plenty that did when they were already dying, but that was hardly the merges fault was it?

It's a combination of things, and one of the big factors is age of the game. If a fairly young game starts to merge servers, it's usually taken as a clear sign of problems. Take Auto Assault for example. Merging CAN be less fatal to a very old game, as it's more likely to be seen as just down to age and attrition, that they're just consolidating things; but it can just as easily be seen as a portent of doom.

Is the hardware around here in any shape or form capable of dealing with a merge? A RWZ raid with four+ teams is like a slideshow with severe power activation lag, on Defiant.

So you hit 50 just by fighting street mobs? Didn't you want any variation?

Actually I've hit 48 with a Scrapper and 42 with a Brute without any variation. And think about how that applies to relationships; chances of me getting bored of you? Nil.

You fool! Don't you realise that the merging of meals will be percieved as the first sign of a famine? Banks will lose confidence in farmers' future credit rating and stop lending them money, the farmers will be unable to raise money for new machines or necessary repairs to old ones, tractors will be left rusting in the fields, crops will be wiltering on their stalks (for those crops that have stalks, other crops will wilter in similar, but not identical, manners), the farmer will go personal bankrupt, there will be no food harvested, with no food harvested bakers, grocers, jam and preserve factories will collapse, unenmployment will skyrocket, the stores will be empty of food, people will starve, the economy will implode, there will be war, conquest, pestilence and famine. The government will fall, anarchy will reign, armed bands of Australian hoodlums will roam the countryside searching for the last, dwindling hoards of petrol. But that's not all -- it will get so bad that FloatingFatMan will have to change his name to FlitteringThinBloke. Do you want that on your conscience?

[u]You have inquired about:[u] Merging Defiant and Union.

[u]Reasons stated:[u] More players on one server, easier to find teams, individual populations on servers too low, desire to inflame tempers on forum.

[u]Arguments against:[u] Name conflict/renaming issues, loss of characters/slots/paid for slots on merged server, often seen as sign of failing game in MMO community driving away potential customers, threads argued to dishearten newcomers to the forum, community co-ordinator stating that there are no plans to merge the servers.

Thank you for your enquiry, have a pleasant day.

These threads have been happening for ages and i swear people only do it now to stir up trouble. Friday comes along and someone somewhere feels the need to post something about server merges, no matter how it's worded. Why don't we all just make a pledge to ignore any topic with the words server and merge in the same sentence.
Solves all problems.

The above is only my opinion, please don't hate me for it

GhostRaptor: Server populations have been trending upwards since Issue 13 release. There are no current plans for any server mergers and we're looking forward to Issue 14 and the rest of the year.

i say merge all the servers into one and then we can implement this

The European Union commissioners have announced that an agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).

In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c".
Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard "c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make a word like "fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they should go.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by " v".

During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst place!

Please do not merge servers.

Defaint is my home and it feels right my main chars are over there, granted i have alts on Union. I'd rather just keep things as they are.

merging servers is never good sign for games.
