Well, yes. Stores close at what time on Christmas Eve? I know mine shuts at 4pm, but the people who work in it will be there until at least 6pm, if not longer to get ready for Boxing Day. Anything after 4pm must be considered "very late", then.
[/ QUOTE ]
Not all stores. Bet you my local Tesco petrol station thingy will be open later than that. A loaf of bread may not be much of a present, but at least it's something.

I'll be working until 11pm on Christmas Eve. Standard, normal working day as far as my work is concerned.

Most people I know in retail won't finish until 9pm Christmas Eve, no different to another working day. The shops may shut for business late afternoon, but there's still an awful lot of work to be done "behind the scenes". Where do you think the magic Boxing Day sales come from?

Out of interest, FG, are you taking what was meant as some sarcasm by someone (not me) as a grave insult to all shop workers? Or some indication that all shops shut early? Or some desire to intimate that everyone has it worse than retail workers?
I have to admit that I don't understand why you're insisting on pressing this, and would only like to point out that, as a non-retail worker, I have been sat in an office on Christmas Eve until some stupid time at night trying to get code out the door I had no hope of succeeding with, so I don't need the lecture.
Merry Christmas.

Beats the hell out of me, I didn't make that post. I should change my forum password.
I think what Stasis was trying to get across was that retail workers, at least, work too late to get any 'last minute' shopping done.
But they work in shops. Surly it is easy.
Products come to till that u think would make a good xmas present. " I am sorry Sir/Madam we cant sell you this one as it has a defect etc etc please could u get another from the display" Customer goes to get another. Place product in pile of gifts under the till. Pay for them on lunch/ at clocking off. Shopping done with no extra work

Easy to get a present, yes. Easy to get the right present? Maybe not so much.
Let's say you have to go get a gold and diamond necklace. You don't want to get one off QVC, and you know where you can get a great one for your parent/partner/pet cat. However, you're working until 9/10pm on Christmas Eve. Not a problem, because you can just get one from work, right?
Well, not exactly. In this scenario, you work at a butchers shop. Looks like all your parent/loved one/pet cat is getting for Christmas this year is a slab of steak. Personally, I'd love to get good red meat as a present (and incidentally, did, for my birthday) but other people might not.
This year is technically my first Christmas, and I had a helluva time choosing Stasis' Christmas present. I've heard the horror stories about previous presents for her and her family from her last boyfriend, because they were all bought from where he worked which doesn't really show care and consideration for the person. The present I've picked out for her is truly awesome...but I don't know when I can buy it. Especially since she's currently ill and staying in at home so I can't sodding well buy her anything and bring it in. Ahem.
Her health, of course, is my only concern.
GO AWAY SO I CAN BUY YOU SHINY THINGS!

Pretty sure I've seen her now. I didn't get much of a look though, because I sneezed and have no idea where she landed.
You need to feed that girl some burgers.

Where would I find the time to stalk Golden Girl AND Stasis? No, I like staring at the games on the shelf in the desperate hope that one will be enticing enough to buy, and thus give me some respite from my girly need to buy things. She just seems to hang around the place stopping me, along with all the other people in those matching t-shirts, from just taking whatever I want.

i say merge all the servers into one and then we can implement this
The European Union commissioners have announced that an agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).
In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c".
Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard "c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make a word like "fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they should go.
By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by " v".
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst place!
