Day job badges, or "a reason not to log in"

Well I must say I'm dissapointed

i13!!!!!

New badges!!!!

Now it s a known fact by a few I love my badges (that may be a small understatement, I leave you to decide!), and I do get a little quivery at the thought of tracking down those badges.

I've loved the new issues before, because they normally come around at the time I start to feel a bit "what's the point?" about things. And this issues timing was no different.

However, what is the method for getting around 48 badges on all my badge toons (currently 12 serious badgehunters)? Stay logged off!!!!!!!!

So now I'm not playing.

Kinda seems to defeat the point of why I pay to play.

The thing is, I know not everyone has got a serious badging problem, but there are alot of players who collect badges as a way of having something to "do" in the game.

I just see this as a dangerous place to be for the devs....how long before the long term badgehunters start to think "actually, do I REALLY miss this game?" and clear off altogether?

I'm thinking that the only reason I stay on at the mo is the community (dwindeling fast) and the fact that I have one of the highest badge collections and I kinda like that thought.

But after i13 has come out, I've done 2 tfs and naff all else.

I'm just worried that dayjob badges are gonna have a detrimental effect to the game.

Good grief.....I ramble, don't I?

What are your thoughts on the dayjob badges and lengths to earn them?

It's a badge thing.......

I'm inclined to agree, in some respects, Sal.

You are addicted to badging

All humour aside, though, by my take on things, the day-job badges and accolades are there for one reason only - to encourage altoholism in badgewho... hunters.

It makes more sense if you think about it that way - they want you to leave your main character offline so that you can earn badges on them. What else can you do? Why, use another toon for badgehunting, of course!

I think that's the intention.

We shall see.

I dont particularly mind the time to get them if its across the board, but I do object that all of the alts I dont use, get the badges, yet the ones I play regularly cant get them as I have logged them on and played, yet these are the ones I have collected badges on.

You have 12 toons, play a different one each night and you will take 23 days for each day job badge (and thats assuming you play 24 hours a day). You don't really lose out that much.

I can understand poor Sal...
In comparison to Sal, well im just a lowlie badgewh... badge affordable friend with my 575 badges. (addicted too)
Only badges that i got left heroside... are those which one have to "farm", "veteran badges" and now "Day Job" badges.
I was in glee when Ouroboros came out (soo many new badges.. yeay). Cause it gave me the chance of being alot of active on this char.

Day Jobs, well they are there as a reward for the not-so-hard core badgers or players. For those of us who are badgewh.. affordable friends, its a bitter taste.
Im just glad they put the timer down to 21 days (from 30), although even with this.. it feels too long.

Getting more defeat badges etc in addition would have been abit more fun.... (I hope for .. defeat 5'th column and get your 5'th colum glad )
Oh well.. i'll have fun levelling my little sonic/pain corr abit (Devs intent.. go.. make .. alts!)

I know what you are saying there, but you have to understand, I badge hunt on ALL those toons. The reason I am at 460 badges min on cov and 543 badges min coh is because I WANT the badges NOW

So telling me I can wait 2 more days is like telling a smoker to put his cigarette out cos its bad for him!!!!

I did have this post lined up, Sal... but with that last post you made there, I see you're an incurable case.

Sorry, you just have to pay to not play.

Simple mate, make another toon

That or seek help, and if you want, ill take your cumbersome badges off your hands, stryke has 400+ he can carry a few more mate, you know, just to help you out

On a serious note I know what you mean on the not-playing-to-get-badges side, however I think shadowes' point is valid, its a good excuse to spread yourself across your toons, although in your case Sal, you have more badges than a Boy scout convention so I dont know the solution for you other than cold turkey

Can't get them? Unless you keep them logged on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they *will* get them. You do not need to leave a character logged out continuously to get the badges. Any time spent logged off, no matter how long or short, is counted. For example:

1. You logged out in Day Job Location A last time you played.
2. 12 hours later you log in. You have earned 12 hours worth of progression towards the badge.
3. You play for 5 hours before logging out in the same location.
4. After 7 hours you log in with the same character. This 7 hours is added to the existing 12.
5. Your character now has 19 hours worth of progression.

A regularly played character will progress towards the badges at a slower rate, yes, but to say that they "can't" get them is completely wrong. As someone else noted above, if you have alts and play them all reasonably frequently you won't take more than a day or two longer to get the badges than a character that is never played.

This is a bit vexing for me as I was working on the 100mil dmg badge, but it's a bit difficult to do that when logged off.

Grrr.

Maybe I'lldo all the flashback badges on another toon to pass the time.

GR... how can I put this?

There is no point in using reason in a discussion like this. People do not want to hear actual figures, they want to complain that they have to not play their character in order to get something without any effort.

If you think about it in those terms, you'll soon realise that actually explaining this is a waste of your valuable time. Go out, drink, play pool so Shadowe can spy on you and report back to us.

The truth, she is spoken.

I'm constantly amazed that anyone complains about not being able to get every single badge on their character, when the system was intended to - and would work best as - a way of differentiating your character from others. If lots of people have all of them, who cares?

Compulsive collection is something I don't empathise with really, but it's hardly uncommon. Look at stamp collecting, or coins. Or even the tendency people have to want to play every class in an MMO...

Doesnt work that easily, when they announced them, I parked all my alts up.

The ones I havent played all got the badges, the ones I have are only 30% done

My own feeling on this is that those toons which don't have the badges after a month or 6 are the most loved. It's almost as tho NOT getting them on your favourite toon is, to exuse the pun, a badge of honour

I only collect badges on Golden - purely because she was my first char and I love badges - combines with the act that I dont play enough or have the patience to collect them all on my other alts. It did sadden me to log in with Goldie who 99% of the time logs out in Wentworths to find she had no time earned towards the badge, yet logged on some of my unused alts to find they had a badge for doing nothing.

I have to agree with Sal - badges are often 'I want it now' rather than 'I will patiently earn it over the course of a year'

But playing every class in an MMO is actually a different experience (in a good MMO like this one) whereas meticulously collecting badges that you make near-meaningless by the very act just seems inherently self-destructive.

I know, I'm missing the point somehow... and I don't want to discuss any further because I don't actually want to offend anyone. I just don't think anyone has the slightest leg to stand on when complaining that badges aren't completely effortless to get - surely the effort is the fun of it, and if they're trivial to get your collecting means nothing?

Perhaps this is a generational thing, I'm no spring chicken.

And in that sentence is exactly the point! How is it fun NOT to play a charactor I enjoy playing, because he is my main badge collector and therefore I want him to have the badges.

Not really, as trying to get a high number on a Tank, Blaster (x 2), defender (x2), scrapper, a warshade and controller (and thats just the HEROES!) is a challenge in itself! I've currently got Master of States tf on 3, and I'd love to get it on the others. It's a way of proving to myself that I can play any AT well enough, whereas these new badges arent a challenge, they are near meaningless, save for their existance. Can my tanker get them easier than my blaster? No. So therefore, these badges are MORE meaningless than any other in the game! You almost couldnt HELP but get some, by mistake.

Meh, *shakes self* theres more to this than badges......

Yup...explorer ones = Look at me, I went there!!! (currently not found on any farming toon )

Level up badge = I got 10 levels!!!!

VIP and Pocket d = Look, I pay money for badges!!!....errr...

But still not as meaningless as logging out and not playing a charactor for ages, surely?

I'm just left wondering what the devs REALLY wanted from this idea. Was it to pursuade us to play alts more? Or to switch toons alot? Or just stay logged off so the newer players dont get to ask all those FUN questions we all asked at one time or another?
