Be honest, when the new sets arive, PI will be flooded with lowbies just getting their toon asap to 50. They get bored, they leave and we're back at the start.

Like a guy on MMOrpg said nicely:
CoH is like the most beautifull rubber band i've ever seen. yet, by now, its stretched out too far and lost its touch.

The 'hype' period after each issue is shortening with each issue, i just dont login my 46 anymore just to evade stupid party requests that been flooding PI, my tanker get mocked for hardly having any IO set bonuses.

No, just give me 1 chance to transfer all my character to the US, i would be happy. (yes, there also are such invites etc, but due the way higher playerbase, it hardly affects you since you still can find good players).

I stumbled across this thread and said to myself 'What's Marge Simpson got to do with it?'. Then i had a wash, got dressed and properly woke up and realised it said 'Merge Servers'.

Lord of the Rings Online: Teaming happens on a purely ad-hoc basis, aside from end-game dungeon runs. Teams tend to form when a couple of people in an area have the brains to notice that they are competing for scarce resources (and in LotRO scarce is almost non-existant). They break up immediately after. If you're not in a raiding guild and kitted up to the best available you have exactly no chance of ever seeing the inside of any of the raid dungeons, let along completing them.

[/ QUOTE ]

Has it really got that much like WoW with the right kit etc there?

[/ QUOTE ]

It was like that about 6 months ago when I quit, by now it'll be worse. For a game that started out with no PvP and no raids, it's done an amazing job of following in WoW's footsteps. The dungeons I've heard of recently being added even follow the principle of "you must have <previous-dungenon-X> on farm to have the kit from that to be able to do this one."

One interesting, if hardly unforseeable, wrinkle is that Monster Guilds are very popular. There are players who no longer bother playing their PCs. They log in straight to Sauron's side and play their orcs, wargs and spiders. Seems reasonable to me: who wouldn't want to play a character which starts at level cap, can be buffed up to Elite Master level by ganking people, and has no real death penalty. PKer's paradise.

Facts are like busses there is one along every 5 minutes and they may or may not go where you want them too.

It made me when you were looking at slightly more populated games, I believe that WoW is still the largest MMO currently?

If and I do mean if the servers get merged or moved it wont necessarily mean doom for the company or the game, there are as many people who would welcome the extra room for alts and the extra player numbers… I know I would I have enjoyed my visits to the American servers on the odd trial hear and there.

COX needs a kick in the bum its moved along in the same vain for far far to long.

Power sets have changed beyond all recognition from there original versions but to see a rationalisation of servers as a toll of doom seems a tad odd, with the recent redundancy’s, I cant believe that server costs wont be examined as well and if a good saving can be made that’s worth while having I would expect them to make the change.

After all if they are prepared to let well liked staff go how can an inanimate lump of metal stand a chance against the accountants?

Anyway will be back when Warhammer gets tarnished and pickup where I have left off again

That was the entire point of using it as an example.

A server merge would result in less room for alts. You can have 32 alts per server. That won't change if the servers merge.

If the servers were to merge, the 'increased population' would not, of necessity, improve teaming probability, that was the whole point of the post.

Fact: try reading what you're rplying to and understanding it before replying. Hope Warhammer remains untarnished for a long time.

You know you've been playing CoX too long when you can predict the next server merge/game is dead/it's all gone to the americans/animated hair thread. And you post in it anyway!

UNION @Flitz 50, Lead Hose 50, Red Rag 50
DEFIANT Rose Bloodthorn 34
VIGILANCE Captain Caledonia 20 - Yeah, I made toons on the French server coz we only had 4 back then (might have to transfer/recreate them on one of the US servers)
..and many more!

Server merge threads are always fun - sure there are a few + sides to the idea but there are also a lot of negative sides to it. Personally I wouldnt care either way as long as my toon names don't have to change. As this is a fair sized risk I would have leave this theory /unsigned

Oodja Nikabolokov - Lvl 50 SS/WP Brute
Baby-Phoenix - Lvl 50 Peacebringer

P2P wise yes, but not in the entire MMO world.

Yet, back to CoH, they are at top having the lousiest (for those who have a board) board of em all.

Darn it, I had a straight flush of persecution complexes.

Imaginary poker aside, some of the rebuttals posted did seem a bit 'vigorous'. Kudos on the linkage to prior art though.

Sometimes I would like to see a server merge just to see the line of mouth-agape emotes it would generate on the forums, but like the majority that have spoken (and borderline ranted in a few cases) I agree it's unwise (e.g. it's the twighlight manoeuvre of a subscription game) and unlikely (e.g. there's still new features and content being generated that are consuming dev time, not to mention support).

The single largets issue about a server merge that bothers me is the naming issue.

I've been playing as Coin since day 1. I've had the same toon all this time, he's my main, I have an entire bucketload of storylines in my head for him, all the related toons as well, even an alternate universe version on Union (twin sister!) as well.

I'd be gutted beyond belief if someone else managed to get that name by default of being the first to log in because I was at work!!

And I consider myself a casual player in terms of characterisation. Looking at some of the stuff on the RP forum, I can see there being bloodshed if it happened to some people!!

Read one of the 50 billion threads already on it, and you'll see why.

EDIT: Most of the time it's suggested by people who don't play at peak times, or who are fairly new, or who just don't realise that most of the game is set in instances, so of course the zones will appear empty.

The Way Dark Age of Camelot Deals with a server merge is they include in brackets the original server name you came from by your name, for example:

Isit Hotinhere
<Union> **
<insert guild name here>

** server would change depending on where your toon was from originally and thus avoid name problems.

If the servers were to merge - you could still pick the option of defiant or union on the main login screen, but that would also signify the <**> under your name, so if you primarily a defiant toon but created an alt - it'd still say Defiant there. likewise with Union.

Just a thought

I said it before and I'll say it again: my mains are named Blue Rabbit and Maroon Hare. No other modifiers needed or wanted. There are reasons for those names. If they were to be changed in any way, well, I'd be here until my subscription ran out.

You might win some, but you'd lose one.

I have to agree with Mr Myxamatosis, although the OP's idea is(while radical in some extents)not entirely without its small merits, on the whole I would find it would bring more problems in the long run, the main one for me would be the names issue, as with blues post, all my toons names have a reason behind them and it would be highly irritating to have to change the whole spin of my toon to appease some others worries about flagging server poulations.

And to cover THAT note, from a personal view, my sg has dwindled in numbers for varying reasons ( some trying WAR, others on AoC but returning and the rest having varying rl issues) but in the long run most are returning for i13 and because as i have experienced 1st hand (left 2 years ago to try WoW....god knows why) this game has a lure that pulls you back time over again.

So to summise, its an idea born out of someones love for the game but is one that would probably draw more people away than would bring in (time differences/name issues/language barriers etc)

But dont let this dishearten you (OP) showing that you want something to extend the games lifespan shows there is people out there who still care for this game and that can only be a good thing.

I'm going to close this thread, because we've been over and over this exact topic several times recently already. I don't see the need for a new thread on the topic, as nothing has changed in the last few weeks (or, indeed, months ). As such there are no plans currently for any server mergers.

Besides, you'll shortly have something much more worth discussing .
