Big trouble running the game in Vista 64.
It works perfectly in Vista 64 actually, it's what I run.
The screen offset sounds like the problem with some beta version of the Nvidia 177.79 drivers (which I believe was repeated in the WHQL ones). If you install the latest beta ones (I'm running 177.92), this problem is fixed.
Of course, that's if you're using an Nvidia card. If you're using an ATI one, do NOT use the 8.8 Catalyst drivers; they're incompatible.

Why, thank you!
That worked like a charm, now if I only get the mousepointer to work then I´m all set!
Ok...
Well... lets take this to the next step then....
I got the resolution and screen working[that seemed to be a pure gfx driver problem], but somehow now the mousepointer is the next problem....not beeing there I mean...
Read on the american forums other people seems to have had the same problem and suggested a couple of solutions there.
one beeing a command of some type adding -compatiblepointer -1 or something like that(copy pasted it before so it should have been right).
Well the problem was... well it made the game not start up at all...
Kinda sad that there is so much trouble getting the game up and working... :/ Was so long since I played last time...
Gonna give it one more shot anyway... Anyone have any hints of what to do with the no mousepointer issue?
Otherwize I´ll have to put on some spandex and run out for a superhero night at town here and that would probably get me arrested, and noone would be a winner then :P
have you not install Sp1?
again, most of these problems were long ago resolved but if your just running a base install of Vista 64, it won't help
The correct switch should be -compatiblecursors 1 but it hasn't been needed for some time...

Yepp it is the SP1 verison, Home Premium.
So the mousetrouble earlier was a SP1 issue?
Damn then I managed to get another issue then :/
Ah well guess I´m probably just gonna pull off all my hair if I keep it on, I guess I´ll try reinstalling the game another time and hope for the best that it´ll work then.
Thanx for the good advice, got me a bit in the right direction atleast
Think my girlfriend is cheering tho since that means more spore time for her :P Bet she's the one responsible!! Yes,it's probably all her fault :P
i know this is a mini thread jack but has anyone got it running ok in xp 64? i havent tried yet
@ExtraGonk
Hmm...
I'm running Vista 64 Ultimate SP1 and still need the -compatiblecursors 1 switch in order to see mouse pointers.

Err badly due to many many gfx driver issues. If you can find 100% working specific XP64 dirvers you should be fine.
I'm running Vista 64 with two Nvidia 8800s. I still need the compatible cursors tag. However, it's academic as CoH crashes out all the time with the Nvidia bug. Still no workaround/solution despite a long correspondence with tech support. The new Nvidia driver didn't fix it either. Bah! To be fair, it's a Windows/Nvidia problem which is not specific to CoH. It does seem, however, to affect "older" games more. Most games released in the last 13 or so months don't seem to be affected at all...
running Vista 64 bit SP1 with no problems at all. No need for the compatablecursor command, running the latest nvidia drivers, no graphical issues at all. Guess I am just lucky

That bug is doing my damn head in. I ONLY get it with City of Heroes on my 9800GTX. Last night I risked letting Windows Update ruin my whole PC, and all seemed to be going well with all the updates. Three hours, Media Player blazing away in the background, no problems. Awesome I thought, problem solved, I can team again.
The log out button crashed it.

I sympathise - it is really annoying me too. I'm getting rather resentful about paying a monthly suscription to a game that is, for me, unplayable. Although tech support were very nice, they didn't actually solve the problem. I believe the problem to be specific to some Nvidia cards (from reading other threads) so there must be significant proportion of players suffering from the same thing. How did you get on with tech support? The last e-mail I got implied they were working on it but that was some time ago...
for those vista users getting tired of the UAC prompt but not willing to turn UAC off, try this...works well so far

[ QUOTE ]
User Account Control (UAC) is a security feature of Microsoft Windows Vista that changes the architecture of the access token creation process and prevents users from logging on with full administrative rights.
While the intent of this feature may have been enhanced security, all too often users need administrative rights for routine tasks like installing/updating programs and changing operating system settings. Additionally, many software applications need the appropriate access to run properly. This leads to poor user experiences because UAC always prompts the user on every administrative task. The prompts are slow to display and appear frequently without warning. Also, UAC prompts are confusing and do not provide users with any recommendations. This actually raises security concerns because prompting the user for every action with the intent that the user misses nothing is a false security model. The more a user is prompted, the more likely it is that he or she will dismiss the prompt without reading it.
The net effect is that many users find the UAC security clearance/prompting process annoying, especially those who are a given computers sole user and are running the latest Norton Internet Security software.
The Norton User Account Control tool will replace parts of the Windows Vista UAC system. It will utilize the UAC security feature from the Windows Vista architecture, while simultaneously improving user-friendliness significantly. The tool prompts recommendations based on an assessment on the user-action i.e. the signature information of the executable. The tool also has a remember me feature that allows users to suppress future prompts from the same action.
The goal of this tool is eventually build a white-list (as well as black-list) database on various administrative actions, and to enable users to make smart decisions without unnecessary prompts, using prompts only as a last resort. The prompt will provide users with as much information as possible, as well as recommendations on the action requested. The Norton User Account Control tool will collect user input as well as information about the application that causes UAC prompts. This data will be processed to help build and improve the comprehensiveness and robustness of the white list.

Norton... even after nuking it from orbit you still can't be REALLY sure.
...but then of course, the same applies to Vista. There's only one way to settle this... THUNDERDOME!

It doesn't work (Norton AV has a 60%-70% success rate compared to Avast or AVG's 90%+, their Internet Security package delights in throwing up false positives and breaking online games).
It isn't free (Have you SEEN those annual subscription rates? The only time you'll see a free version of Norton is when it's packaged with something else you've bought so they can rope you into subscription)
It doesn't do the job is claims to (You're generally quite lucky if your copy of Norton AV detects anything but false positives and their Internet Security service has a number of documented backdoors)
It's also obscenely bloated, takes up a sizable chunk of memory when it's running and slows your PC's file access times down to a crawl compared to other brands. Look at this link for a quick comparison.
Finally, Norton is one of those programs that burrows very deep into your Windows installation, replacing DLLs and commandeering background services to wriggle itself in. When it comes to trying to get rid of it, it's virtually impossible to completely cleanse your Hard Drive of it other than via reinstalling windows.
It's a Piece of Steaming Pig Manure, and as a long-time ICT tech I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Except possibly for that woman from our Art Dept who has astoundingly selective memory and a Divinity complex.

My mate runs a pc shop, he gets roughly 5-10 people in asking about Norton a week, and still refuses to stock it.
I've seen machines running at a crawl only to go as new once Norton was fully removed.

I concur. I hate the UAC with a passion, but at least its not Nortons hideous, useless bloatware. Vile, horrible thing.
And lol @ Maels grudge with the woman from the art department
THE item I posted about, not Norton as a whole, is FREE!! Its a utility thats free to use, free to download and does a little handy job with UAC, allowing you to just click an option to not ask you again. Its not like Tweak UAC which suppresses the elevation prompt for everything that would show it, but this Norton utility (which did I mention, is free!) allows you to set a rule for individual programmes that result in an elevated UAC prompt.
Makes ya wonder why bother putting potentially useful info here eh Yes a lot of Norton programmes are bloated and slow, but maybe, just maybe, check out the info and programme that was linked 'before' the dig at stuff lol . Did any of you complaining about Norton actually try this UAC utility, yeah the free one?
Well, already read its not "supported".... well...
Is it so bad that it wont even run correctly?
Having the problem the Screen being offset so I cant login and get past the char screen....
And same thing is in safe mode... it just hell :/
Is there any command to force the game to run in windowed mode to see if that works?
