  1. It won't work for me either. Not tried trying to get straight ingame as I think that'll (eventually) cause more problems than it's worth. Tried to delete the .prv file etc. as above but no joy.

    Anyone got any other solutions?

    Cheers.
  2. Errr...I like Cimerora. Anyhoo, what no one seems to have mentioned is an engine revamp. After looking at the screenshots for CO, I think a cosmetic improvement would make a nice, if a little facile, change. Bring on the moonbases though.
  3. I've found pounding my head on the desk a particularly effective anodyne... I've tried everything and it still crashes. (Vist 64 with one or two Sparkle 8800 GT(s))
  4. ...I should also add that the two characters that crash all the time both have moustaches so I accept that it is entirely possible that there is some problem with a moustache rendering sub-routine.
  5. Thanks for all the advice- it may not have totally solved the problem but it is much appreciated. I have, however, noticed something a little strange...

I had thought the bug was fixed yesterday. I was playing my main toon (lvl 50 blaster) in and around Cimerora: the game didn't crash once and nor has it when I'm playing that character in that zone. The minute I play with any of my other characters, around Steel Canyon, Boomtown, the usual places, the game crashes.

I can only assume that as the spartan environment of Cimerora does not contain as many effects, textures and so on as other zones it means there is less chance of the driver crashing. Or is that a stupid thing to think? Either way, as long as I play in Cimerora I seem to be fine. Weird...

I've also decided to go for HIS Radeon 4850 IceQ4 1Gb card. I reckon that will cut this particular Gordian Knot.

Thanks again for all the advice.
  6. Thanks for the input - I'll give Driver Cleaner a go. I've not considered any other part of my system because the error message specifically relates to the graphics card and it also seems to be a, relatively, common problem: there are lots of threads kicking around about it.

I fear that it is not a problem which is able to be solved from my end only. All my other games and programs work fine. I did have some "older" titles but they appear to work well with the latest drivers. Is it possible that COH needs some patching?
  7. Yes. I tried that before opening up my machine and taking a card out. :-) Still no joy though. As I said, I can play for ten minutes now instead of 30 seconds but the same crash occurs. Guess I'm just unlucky with my setup.
  8. It seems, however, that both our confidences are ill-placed. It's still crashing out - it just takes longer. Here's me thinking I'd solved the problem. Looks like a new graphics card for me then! Which one though? Hmmm.
  9. Having some time today gave me an opporutnity to cut this Gordian knot and it looks like FFM was right: I removed one of the 8800s and, now that it's not an SLi machine, it works darn fine. Rather worringly, there has been no perceptible drop in the graphics quality or performance of any other games I've run.
  10. I don't think power's a problem - I've got a 600w Enermax and, as I said, all other games are fine. What I can tell from the above comments is: don't get an ATI one as they seem more trouble than they're worth and don't get another Nvidia one because they seem to suffer from the same problem, albeit to a very much lesser extent.

    Boh.
  11. Thanks - yes. It's the one FFM posted at the start. I've tried the hotfixes and I've tried disabling SLi mode - nothing really works. Weirdly, the game ran for around ten minutes last night before crashing - around ten time longer than usual- and I hadn't changed anything! Still crashed out though. I'm reluctant to try much older drivers as they may affect other games I play a lot. The new drivers, unfortunately, made no difference. So - I still think I should treat myself to a new graphics card.

It was all much easier with DOS 5.1, it really was.
  12. I'm running on 64-bit Vista - it seems to be a, relatively, common problem with "older" games. I've tried (almost) everything and nothing seems to work. That's why I've decided the easier route would be to upgrade.
  13. Yes, it's more than enough to run COH but I play a lot of other things too. I was looking at the 4870 too. It has the advantage of not being an Nvidia build...

Cheers for the suggestion FFM - no joy I'm afraid: same Nvidia graphics crash gubbins!
  14. Hello all - looking for a little bit of advice regarding graphics cards.

I've given up trying to get COH to run with my two SLI'd 8800s and I've decided to upgrade in order that I can play COH again without crashing out within 30 seconds or so. This begs two questions:

    1. If I buy Nvidia again - am I likely to suffer from the same problems?

2 What's a decent card at a decent price that's better than the two 8800s I've already got.

    I thought this looked alright...

    http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1368...html?srcid=867

but given my present setup, my judgement is obviously suspect. I've also given up on SLI altogether and am thinking that one card could do the job better anyway.

Any input would be greatly appreciated and, technically, this is about COH and it is a technical issue...

  15. I, rather naively, thought that the combination of the new drivers and Issue 13 would mean the game would now work: ah the beauty of ignorance for all of five minutes before it crashed out. I'll try turning Aero off: I like it but not as much as I like playing the game...

    :-)
  16. Thanks. I'll have a go with that. However, it's a bit of a kerfuffle. My last PC had two 6600s running in SLI and I didn't have any problems at all.
  17. ...Quite...However, it's a little drastic. Additionally, all my other games work fine. I know, essesntially, it's a software thing and I'm hoping that it'll be addressed in the next build. Of course, it's an irrational hope.
  18. Quite...Well... I say! Norton, eh!?

(On a completely related to the thread issue, I'm still having problems running it in Vista with SLI Nvidia cards. Apparently, it's "the way it's meant to be played"...Ah - my irony-o-meter has just blown up...)
  19. I sympathise - it is really annoying me too. I'm getting rather resentful about paying a monthly suscription to a game that is, for me, unplayable. Although tech support were very nice, they didn't actually solve the problem. I believe the problem to be specific to some Nvidia cards (from reading other threads) so there must be significant proportion of players suffering from the same thing. How did you get on with tech support? The last e-mail I got implied they were working on it but that was some time ago...
  20. I'm running Vista 64 with two Nvidia 8800s. I still need the compatible cursors tag. However, it's academic as CoH crashes out all the time with the Nvidia bug. Still no workaround/solution despite a long correspondence with tech support. The new Nvidia driver didn't fix it either. Bah! To be fair, it's a Windows/Nvidia problem which is not specific to CoH. It does seem, however, to affect "older" games more. Most games released in the last 13 or so months don't seem to be affected at all...

Ah well, it's nice to see that people will still fight over last place... ;-) Still, I reckon I can still lay claim to the "most cowardly" monicker...

I've finally managed to get to level 50 with my main character - Kentigern, the most cowardly blaster on Union. I played in the Beta and have been in COH since day one. I've not got any other chars above level 15 and I've got a Level 21 villain. My question is this:

Is this the longest anyone's taken to get their main char to level 50?

If I'm going to be rubbish at something, I want to the REALLY rubbish.

Sorry for being ambiguous - some points are implicitly made.

What I meant was that there are other MMOs which are more ‘in-depth’. World of Warcraft springs immediately to mind. It seems a great many players are always ‘shopping’- looking for that certain set of armour, sword, talisman, etc, etc… What I like about the ‘City of’ games is that this activity is more or less absent. Perhaps what I should have said was that I find the ‘City of’ games suitably facile: they have a more immediate pick up and play value which I don’t think it to their detriment.

Of course, as soon as I had posted this, it's the busiest I've seen it for some time...Double XP weekend I suppose.

However, I'm not sure about concerns relating to depth. Personally speaking, it's enough for me. I don't want to become embroiled in endless item collecting/chasing. I also don't have huge amounts of time to devote to an MMO - probably why I've still to reach Level 50 with any of my characters... Still, it's nice to see the place a bit busier over the last couple of days.

...is Union really, really quiet these days? I remember when you could pick up a team within five minutes, every zone would be buzzing etc, etc. Now, I rarely see another hero never mind a big group.
