Irrelevant, if it's made by Norton, then it's evil.
Youtube doesn't lie. Norton is evil.

And if you use Norton products, you'll be evil by association.
...you don't want to be evil, do you....?

Nerd Analogy: It's like being given a puppy by Emperor Palpatine. It might look cute and cuddly... but who knows how many hideous diseases it has, how much you'll be forking out in vet bills in six months time, or what kind of ravenous, man-eating, rancor-like sithbeast it'll eventually grow into?

(whilst the above is tongue-in-cheek, just thinking about installing a Norton product on my own PC actually does give me the heebie-jeebies. Especially one claiming to be "free". I'd want to rigorously test this utility on a spare client first before letting it anywhere near my personal hardware, and even then I'd be effectively quarantining it using Firewall and Resource Manager software. My past experience with Norton products has genuinely been so bad that I simply won't take any chances with them again, ever).

Ha! No wonder you're promoting Norton. That's low! Even for the Fallen One

Quite...Well... I say! Norton, eh!?

(On a completely related to the thread issue, I'm still having problems running it in Vista with SLI Nvidia cards. Apparently, it's "the way it's meant to be played"...Ah - my irony-o-meter has just blown up...)

pull one of the cards, should solve all of your issues.

...Quite...However, it's a little drastic. Additionally, all my other games work fine. I know, essesntially, it's a software thing and I'm hoping that it'll be addressed in the next build. Of course, it's an irrational hope.

CoH has known problems with running cards in SLi mode. The ONLY way to get it to work reliably is to disable one of them. You shouldn't need to remove it, just disable SLi mode.

Thanks. I'll have a go with that. However, it's a bit of a kerfuffle. My last PC had two 6600s running in SLI and I didn't have any problems at all.

Posted

Thems the breaks really. SLi really isn't worth the costs involved really... The speed boost you get just doesn't justify having to buy 2 cards.

I'm running Vista 64 with two Nvidia 8800s. I still need the compatible cursors tag. However, it's academic as CoH crashes out all the time with the Nvidia bug. Still no workaround/solution despite a long correspondence with tech support. The new Nvidia driver didn't fix it either. Bah! To be fair, it's a Windows/Nvidia problem which is not specific to CoH. It does seem, however, to affect "older" games more. Most games released in the last 13 or so months don't seem to be affected at all...

[/ QUOTE ]

That bug is doing my damn head in. I ONLY get it with City of Heroes on my 9800GTX. Last night I risked letting Windows Update ruin my whole PC, and all seemed to be going well with all the updates. Three hours, Media Player blazing away in the background, no problems. Awesome I thought, problem solved, I can team again.

The log out button crashed it.

The newest nVidia drivers may have actually WORKED! Hours and hours and hours without the dreaded graphics driver crash! Constantly windows keying back to the O/S to change songs hasn't even budged it.

THIS POST is the final test. If I can boast about it on here and it still doesn't fall over, I'm home free!

*waits expectantly*

It's so going to crash.

Yeah I got one after hours of burning Rikti to death. Then I turned off Aero and so far haven't had a problem. Either way, it's now a long time between problems for me, so if nothing else the game is playable again.

I'd recommend turning off Aero anyway, the desktop doesn't look any different in any way, and everything runs faster. Computer boots up a hell of a lot faster as well. Aero is utter trash.

You need new glasses mate. The desktop looks TOTALLY different without Aero and all its transparency effects. I can't STAND it like that.

Nothing changed when I moved it over. And I did it just now to make sure. Aero is just the 'Windows Vista Basic' colour scheme with some pointless whizzbangs like the switching between windows button. Which still works with Aero off but in a massively more efficient manner.

I, rather naively, thought that the combination of the new drivers and Issue 13 would mean the game would now work: ah the beauty of ignorance for all of five minutes before it crashed out. I'll try turning Aero off: I like it but not as much as I like playing the game...

:-)

I thought Aero was more to do with the transparency effects... I've never turned it of - I use XP at work so I like the change when I get home.

It's a shame CoH doesn't do what LoTRO (and WAR too I think) does - when you run the program it switches to windows basic display automatically, and switches back when you exit.

That said, I don't have any problems running CoH on mine - single 8800GTS (fairly recent drivers - Mines of Moria wouldn't go with my old ones so I updated last month), Vista64, 4Gb RAM; okay, I've not been playing much lately, but it didn't crash on me when I popped in to look at i13 yesterday.

It does... At least, on my PC it does. It didn't used to, but starting doing it with the most recent drivers.
