Why CoX Rocks!

There are posts every day that talk about what's wrong with CoX and what could be improved, but... as someone who has recently defected from The Dark Side (i.e. another, massively heavily-subscribed, fantasy-laden MMORPG that a few people may have heard of ) I thought I would start a thread for all the things that are right with it. For a change!

Hehe, as someone who's just returned after a month and half break, what made me return after another vain attempt to get into some other MMO, is the realisation that in every other MMO I've been trying, I've found myself soloing far more than teaming. I'm not a great Guild-oriented person, yet I like playing in teams with people, but most MMOs the teaming seems to be oriented around Guilds, and forming PUGs always seems to be harder and rarer than in CoX.
So that's the main thing for me - it's a really social game where I can have fun chatting with people while I'm playing.
I'm kind of past the stage where the gameplay itself is a wonder to me, but it has to be said that the combat in CoX still rocks compared to most other games, and it's the second thing I love most about the game. For one thing, combat is really fast, which I like. And something about the combination of animations, graphics fx and sound fx somehow makes it feel really "solid" to me, whereas in most other MMOs the combat feels somehow "floaty", and the sounds and graphics have less oomph, and seem to "mean" the powers less.
I don't mean to downgrade other MMOs, I've tried a lot of them and they all have their good points, with their own forms of good gampeplay, but at the end of the day, for me as a casual MMO player, CoX has everything I need the most - and the good thing is, although I've gotten a bit bored with it at times, it's always the one I come back to again and again, and every time I come back, the devs have put in some nice new things to spruce the game up a bit.
Oh, and of course, the character/cozzie creation - simply the best in any game. Ever.
you forgot the most important argument of all it rocks simply because we (all the forumites) all say it dose,...
There isnt a problem on earth that cant be solved with the proper aplication of hi explosive's

Couldn't have put the original post any better myself...
I've tried a heap of MMOs and CoX always proves to be the best game for finding a team, having fun in whatever time I have available, character customisation, player attitudes and all the other reasons listed already.
It shoots, it scores.. back of the net!!
I think the costume thing is one of those that always makes me smile. Other games, items are mostly for stats and not really for looks, and in the hobbled together items you wear you end up looking a little silly. In CoH, you can be on the streets as a hero or Villain you've designed, with much more variety and life to them. And individuality.
Being able to log on for an hour and do a couple of missions is always good, the Inventions system isn't optional, changing your characters apperance is quite easy, and despite all my niggles with the game at times, I'm coming up for 42 months now, that's longer than I've ever played any MMO.
Also, kickass community and many friends.
The SK/Tutor system.
Imo that is (along with the easy teaming through player search and of course the costume creation) by faaar the best argument for CoX.
A couple of weeks ago I started a free MMOG with some friends to have a distraction when CoX starts to bore me a little bit.
I got to lvl. 54 without finding any team and since my friends were about lvl.40 we couldn't do anything together at all.
All hail the SK system.

Ooooh, heck yeah! All that chafing.... *shudders*
And yes I agree, the sidekick system is complete genius. My mother-in-law plays The Other MMORPG (a lot, but then she's retired so she has more time available to do so) and all her toons are at least double the level of any of mine. It got to the stage where if I mentioned that I was struggling with soloing a particular quest, she would offer to "help" me with it, since "I found it quite easy when I did it with my Paladin, but I suppose it must be harder for a Druid to do without help. Although my Druid's doing really well at the moment..."
I know she means well, but there's something very disheartening about doing a quest at your level with some uber-teammate in epic armor, who just rocks up and one-shots eight mobs with one casual swipe of her Sword of Big Killing... while you stand there and hope you'll grab enough time to kill one murloc whilst she's busy decimating a horde of Elites. Hard to feel the remotest bit 'super' in those circumstances! The SK system instantly levels the playing field - and the fact that it scales both up AND down is the icing on the cake. Why other games haven't incorporated it or something like it is a mystery to me.
I've been trying to persuade my mother-in-law to play CoX for some time now, actually, for that very reason. But strangely, she seems a bit reluctant...

Yes. By the way, chainmail and piercings do NOT good bedfellows make.
Important safety tip there, kids.
Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

#1 - You can play it AND still have a life! In The Other MMORPG, a mid-level dungeon is estimated even by the devs. to require "between 3-5 hours" to complete.
3-5 HOURS!! Are they MAD??!
Don't they realise how a big a chunk of life that is for a mother of a two-year-old? In CoX, even if you've only got an hour to spare, you can still have fun. Missions are completeable in that time, even in big teams, so you don't have to miss out just 'cause you can't play for hours.
[/ QUOTE ]WoW instances are comparable to CoH TF's, which can well take that long (or much longer, as is the case with SSTF1)

#4 - The Villains really DO get to be villains! What other MMORPG actually give you missions where you have to rob a bank, for instance? Oh, they say The Horde are the bad guys in The Other MMORPG, but.... well, they're not really all that *bad*, are they?

If the Ninja's went on strike who would do the killing? It could bring the economy to its knees I say
"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"
But what about the Duvet of Ultimate defence? Ninja's can't get through that!
The Character Generator is second to none. Full stop. End of story. Tried DDO, WoW and AoC and even though the game engine is over 4 years old now (And has it's faults) Char gen blows the other MMO's out of the water and into orbit without engines and a painful reentry burn to top it off.
There is nothing around at the moment that compares.

As for the many reasons why CoH rocks, the sk/mentor system must be one of the best ideas ever in a MMO.

What about the vast number of different powerset combinations, what other game gives you so many choices about how you play as well as how you look!?

I'm sure I read on another thread that most of our tfs only take a couple of minutes to complete...
*We have atlas music. The single greatest intro music for a game iv ever heard. Truly sounds heroic.
*Even though we all know its not real/realistic, it feels that way because its based in our timeline not in the space future/medieval times.
*There is a LOT of different directions they could take this game which is good for suprising the playerbase. So far every issue theyv thrown out a few good suprises (story wise) and looks like it can only get better.
*This game makes it feel like YOUR making the difference to saving the world. You arent just some soldier of a great army or part of a species trying to dominate the world . . . . your a hero/villain who starts out trying to make a name for yourself but while you progress you find yourself getting more heroic/epic/powerfull until eventually your the one saving the world/universe.
*Character creation screen - nothing can rival it yet they want to release cossie creator 2.0? (on that survey thingy)
*We have BaBs (ok so the US does)
*Like others have said we have a VERY friendly loyal player base. These days especially you can just log into atlas at almost anytime and most people would gladly offer you advice.
*Very easy to pick up and play without having to learn to play for hours on end to stand a chance.
*That after four years, after a TON of DoooooooooM posts, after so many so called "CoX killer MMOs" being released . . . . .. . . WE ARE STILL HERE!!!!!!
@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!
The main thing I love about CoH/V is how completely you can customise your character - not just appearance, or your path through the game, but also that you can mix & match your powersets and power pools and then take exactly the powers you want from them and enhance those powers exactly as you wish - very different to the cookie-cutter progression in other MMOs where characters of the same level/class/talent-spec usually not only look the same but also play exactly the same way with the same abilities.
Plus, when you play the game through with different archetypes/powersets you do get a totally different gameplay experience - sure, you can get that in other games too with different classes, but here you can get that with different powersets in the same archetype. Most MMOs when I get a single character to maximum level and a few alts to middling levels I get totally bored of the gameplay and move on - not so with CoH/V (as my sig bears testament to) - here I've even played the same archetype to the level cap twice with several more in the mid/low levels of that same AT (brute).
This isn't the MMO I've played for the longest time (EverQuest still holds that place, with 3 full years), but one day I'm sure it will be. CoH/V is still the only MMO I've ever re-subscribed to after quitting - and that was because I really missed the basic gameplay - I still find this game fun after 2 full years as a subscriber (admittedly with a year's break away from it between both years to beta test a few things and then play that other MMO that has been remarkably popular, and yet only held my interest for 6 months).
I think I'll be here a while yet.
Looking at the previous replies, I'm sure this'll be feeble.
Like Valkryst, one of my favourite aspects of CoH is just how much you individually shape your own character. How you decide what abilities they have, and if you wish, how they came about getting these abilities. You then decide what powers you want in your given set as opposed to being told, "you now have this power! Yay!".
I also love how much that, using the game's features, people can bond. In other MMO's, the equivalent of a supergroup is likely to only have a channel, and that's it. Whereas here we have a channel, a base, and events and costume competitions aren't exactly hard to come by.
I could go on, but I would love a cookie.
A cookie? What about cake? Vanilla cake dipped in chocolate. Want some?
I most certainly do!
However, I fear treachery.
However, it is cake.
Please.
Also, I love it how we don't need to constantly update and fix our armour and weapons. and how we can customise them.
edited to keep on topic. Barely.

Sooooo.... here's mine:
#1 - You can play it AND still have a life! In The Other MMORPG, a mid-level dungeon is estimated even by the devs. to require "between 3-5 hours" to complete.
3-5 HOURS!! Are they MAD??!
Don't they realise how a big a chunk of life that is for a mother of a two-year-old? In CoX, even if you've only got an hour to spare, you can still have fun. Missions are completeable in that time, even in big teams, so you don't have to miss out just 'cause you can't play for hours.
#2 - In CoX, you can look drop-dead cool FROM LEVEL ONE (as opposed to The Other MMORPG, where even at level 70 you can look like you fell in the local Amateur Dramatics Society's panto costume box.)
#3 - Not everyone wants to be; a pointy-eared elf, a giant blue goat-person with a dodgy Russian accent, a squat little person with an even dodgier 'Celtic' accent, a saucer-eyed toddler person with silly hair, etc. In CoX, you can be whoever (or whatever) you want to be!
#4 - The Villains really DO get to be villains! What other MMORPG actually give you missions where you have to rob a bank, for instance? Oh, they say The Horde are the bad guys in The Other MMORPG, but.... well, they're not really all that *bad*, are they?
#5 - The chance to play with mature, civil and courteous people - well, certainly a much larger majority of such people than could be found on The Other MMORPG (where huge numbers of 12-year-olds spam all the Chat Channels trying to outdo each other with how many rude words and phrases they can get in one sentence.)
I'm sure more will come to me. This post isn't meant as a giant diss-up to The Other MMORPG (and I'm sure I've dropped enough clues by now as to make it pretty obvious which one that is ) It's just a way of saying to the devs "Yeah, these are the things that make me come back to this game over all the others, so please don't change them or drop them 'cause they work and they're great!"
Of course, if you think I'm being too sucky-uppy/group-huggy, please feel free to barf discreetly and hope I get a Rikti invasion show up on my doorstep.
