The Final Forum Countdown
[ QUOTE ]
Sure, the vast majority of people would use it for sensible purposes, but pretty soon every freakin topic would be filled with those grotesquely annoying "ROFL Cat" things. I just wudnt be able to tolerate it.
[/ QUOTE ]
^This.
Twould be hellish indeed. I'd be off sharpish if it ever happened (not that its ever going to according to K & GR).
[ QUOTE ]
Sorry you took my post personally. I used Quick Reply which, unfortunately tags it to the last post made. I was making a general observation of posting I've seen it was not aimed at you. If I was aiming at you I would have quoted you, as in this instance.
However my observation stands. And I'm posting my reply here as you addressed it here rather than in a PM.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ah, the perils of quick reply.
Fair enough. See what I mean about people assuming the worst, though?
I'm now going to be sensible and get off this particular topic (though I may post in the thread again, just not about this issue).
Thanks for the response, Steampunk. Vastly appreciated.
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*
Keep [img] off, keep em out of sigs, no embedded stuff.
Plain simple as it is now.
HOWEVER.. the quick-reply replies to last poster, the pyramid building quoting, the insane ammount of 'form not valid' or plain timeouts, the 'slowness' of the forums. That may all be fixed
edit: ooh ffs
The form you have submitted is no longer valid.
edit2:

Allowing forum members to embed images and videos, not just mods.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is highly unlikely to ever happen due to the additional moderation burden it would add.
[ QUOTE ]
Raising the avatar size a lil bit. (about a extra 25 x 25 pixies would be fine)
[/ QUOTE ]
Not sure what the size restrictions will be, however with a new forum comes an opportunity to reassess this. One thing I can say is that file size will almost certainly be restricted by the forum code itself, so anyone with particularly large files as avatars may want to consider looking at finding a new avatar (or a version of the current with a smaller file size). Speaking of, I will be contacting a few people about their avatars soon...
[ QUOTE ]
Banning the use of member name 'Golden Girl'.
Banning the use of 'animated' and 'hair' in one sentence.
[/ QUOTE ]
While I'm satisfied that these were meant as a joke, I'd like to point out that they can also be very easily misunderstood and jokes directed at other forum members (especially repeat jokes) may be considered harassment under the forum rules.
[ QUOTE ]
More graemlins.
[/ QUOTE ]
Maybe. Except they probably won't be called 'graemlins' anymore .
[ QUOTE ]
More forum types, enough to compete with the US forums.
[/ QUOTE ]
We'll be reviewing the forum structure as part of the new forums implementation. I, personally, tend to feel that the more specific forums are created the more you fragment discussion and end up with confusion about which forum a specific thread actually belongs in.
[ QUOTE ]
OK that was really only the first part of the post...the second part is a request.
The request is: Wherever you host the new forums, please don't use UBBthreads. There are loads of free forum hosters on the market that forums are actually decent...
[/ QUOTE ]
As a profit making business, we can't use free forum software/hosting (they are either insufficient for our needs or are only free for personal / non-profit use).
We've picked out the forums we'll be using, and they are *not* UBB.
It has already been stated on numerous occasions by GR that image signatures won't happen, ever. (Apparently a moderator decision... so we shouldn't even be discussing it. ).
As for licensing the new software, what so ever it might be, I suspect that most forum software around these days can be licensed for corporate use. eg I know of at least one for profit organisation that run phpBB forums. Whatever we get, providing it isn't UBB, is likely to be a lot better than UBB... after-all can anything not written by me be worse?
Avatars are fine as they are, any bigger and they'd take up too much space on the screen.
As for images in posts, I could see the reason for not allowing them, but then I also can see how they can improve the place, especially when connected to a good software solution that automatically inserts the image as a clickable thumb nail... as for 'tasteless' images are they any worse than a tasteless sig/avatar/post/name...?

We need a few members who bother to use this forum before that.
I want to add two things:
Ability to hide non-English sections from active topics (or similar) function (maybe like the ignore categories/topics, like here).
Do not allow signatures over a certain height (I assume no images at signatures, so just count how many newlines exist)
[ QUOTE ]

That statement means that the decision is final, so I guess it won't hurt to tell us what the new forum brand will be as we won't be able to influence you anymore.
[ QUOTE ]
2) if you can embed an image in these forums, it means you have uploaded the iamge here, and its being hosted by CoH, hosting an illegal image like could be submitted could bring a whole new sect of legal ramifications to NCSoft, regardless of the fact it was one of us that uploaded it.
[/ QUOTE ]Unless the forum software is absolutely horrible, image embedding would be done the same way avatars currently are, by showing an image from an external source. Thus the image will not be hosted by NCSoft.

Shown, yet not hosted is still wrong by law. (responcibility of content).
Anyway, 100 bucks its gonna be VBB.

Here's the thing: every extra minute of moderation on the forums that we have to do is a minute less time we have to do other, more interesting things (for both you and us).
Our jobs involve a *lot* more than just sitting on these forums all day keeping an eye open for bad posts, bad images and just generally moderating.
This is one of the biggest reasons why we tend to err on the side of not allowing some things that might be nice to have.

There's no Wikipedia entry for "Graemlins", thus I submit that the word does not and has never existed and therefore cannot be a synonym for Emoticon. Anyone who believes the word to exist is clearly suffering from some degree of mental incapacity.

I like this idea. Maybe you could just have a header showing with all the sub-boards hidden. So you only have the boards on screen that interest you. If it is kept to a similar set up as it is now. The players who don't read english will not have to scroll past all the boards they can't read.

It actualy does exist, the only difference is that the right-owning parties never put and action into it.
(dunno the exact english names of the laws, we in holland have such though).

Sorry, I'm getting confused, and I'm actually quite interested:
Are you saying that imageshack, with whom I have my avatar hosted, and an agreement that I can use the image for my own purposes, can step in and stop me using this image as a forum avatar, simply because these forums are owned by NC, not imageshack?
Or am I just getting confused about the context of this discussion?

I always though that the forum is here so we can discuss instead of showing-off who has bigger signature and better avatar...
Clattering the pages with useless images, won't make it better looking but it will turn it into a carnival parade.

That's the best news I've seen in week - but one question - will the US forums have to get off UBB and into chosen forum hosters as well?

*sigh*
I'll explain it again.
They will NOT be using any forum hosting companies. Why pay another company when they have their own servers? All they're doing is replacing the current UBB software with new software. The hoster will remain the same, themselves.
And yes, they'll replace the US boards at the same time. How do I know that? Because our forums are hosted at the same server cluster as the US forums.

Firstly, practice what you preach, rather than coming back at me on the forums. I'm quite happy to let GR do the policing - if you can find the part where I told IM that he shouldn't have posted it, that he was wrong to have posted it, and that my feelings on the matter are more important than anyone elses, do please let me know.
Secondly, I will point out that I find it offensive that you believe me to be a 'self-righteous ego'.
Thirdly, one thing that I appreciate about these forums is that everyone is free to express their opinion, which is exactly what I did. I have not condemned the OP for his post, merely stated that in my opinion, which I accept could be wrong, he made an unnecessary dig at a fellow player, and that to me it means that his entire post became devoid of any respectability. YMMV.
