Thank you for all your hard work ransim. Much appreciated. It's great to see our much loved Unionverse and Virtueverse shall soon have a new and better server home. I understand the content exodus might possibly be automatic for the Union wiki? If not, I'm free this October to help with the manual migration.

The new server is faster, more robust and its managed professionally. It will be more secure and offers us more then double the amount of disk space. It also comes with better backups. So its pluses all around. Basically everything you mentioned [more security, capacity, stability, less bots]

I -believe- we can do Union in a more automatic fashion, however even with that said I almost don't know if we should. There is much to be said about keeping all of the page history and user accounts, but there is also a lot of junk filling up the system from bot accounts (even banned ones) to history on bot pages. History content takes up a very large chunk of the data footprint for both wikis.

Union, compared to Virtue will be fairly easy to move in the more manual style, it only have 1700 articles compared to almost 10K. The real snag for Union might be images. There are almost 800 images on the site right now that are above 150K. I don't know offhand how many of those are unused, but those would need to be looked at separately once the migration happens.

We'll be leaving the .com address on the old server for a month or two to allow for people to go back and grab anything.

The new server will also have a hard restriction on file upload sizes, most likely 150 kb, thats why we decided to allow the widgets and for people to use offsite images (like photobucket and the such).

As for the migration, firstly we need some people to hammer the new server for a few days for testing, so if anyone is interested toss me a PM and I'll send over the address.

This I can live with.

(Maybe it'll convince Tech to get his own damn photobucket account instead of using the Handbook to hold his bug/griefer shots. )

Well one important thing to note, this move is going to allow the Admin to run the maintenance scripts more effectively that up to now haven't been as easy to run given the out of date mediawiki software.

So unused images will be purged periodically where prior they haven't been easily purged.

Before the migration gets underway:

I've split the Nighthunter's Diary into one-month-per-page and used the orginal page as a TOC linking to them, because seriously, when trying to find a specific entry makes your eyes hurt like hell and your browser starts struggling with a page even when your comp's pretty badass - there's a problem. :x

PlotBoxes may still need adding to each page.

Gratz to all who were nominated and won a seasonal spotlight! Thanks for doing all the work this time Bunny, great job of it too!

Must update that Nighthunters page with a proper team description and background bio. It's kinda generic at the moment from the pre-establishment days.

And thanks for taking the initiative CD. Looks nice and organised now.

What this means is the site is going to be on complete lockdown and users will be directed to the new site once its ready.

Check out this post for some details on new features coming with the upgrade: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=615

Please make sure this message gets passed along. Its a big deal and I want to make sure everyone has a heads up to whats happening.
Hey guys! I just want to give you an update. VirtueVerse has been officially moved to the new site, http://www.virtueverse.net.

I was hoping to be able to tackle Union this coming weekend but I've been shanghai'd into helping a friend of mine move. So the move for Union will be happening the weekend after Oct 22-24th.

The plus side is I've already done this now with Virtueverse so I know exactly where the snags are and will happen, so it should be a fairly smooth transition for Union.

As a note, like with VirtueVerse I will be leaving the .com address on the old server for a period of time after the migration for people to grab content that wasn't migrated. But the goal eventually will be to move that domain to the new server and ensure all the old links work. Union will be using the new pretty url /wiki/Page like virtueverse does now rather then /index.php/Page.

Thanks ransim!

----

also, I've been a busy Bunny. i keep getting comments on the layouts of my pages and requests for help so I thought I'd add some quick guides and templates to the handbook for people who'd like a little help tarting up their pages:

* Page Templates * Only two up so far; a Praetorian Police File and a Vanguard File but I plan to add more plus some basic coloured background & border type pages very soon

* Colour Help * I noticed that a few people seem daunted by colour customisable templates like the EXCharacterBox put together by Crazy Dragon & Oreso so I put together a guide to help give people a nudge in the right direction.

...if these end up at all appreciated I may do more along these lines, until then happy editting guys! ^^

I feel outdone. ._.

...

Still, they're pretty damn awesome nonetheless.

[EDIT] Just a thought:

It's clear that all-numerical File Numbers are all fine, but in the case of letters, should they just be restricted to the final digits of each half of the number for the sake of not looking silly?

Shall add that as a suggestion to the template pages later (or tomorrow as I'm sleepy!) But people are free to call their files what they like as they're their pages. I just thought it'd provide people who are daunted by colours and coding a little more to play with. ^^

Also thanks for small tweaks on things I copy/pasted and didn't get around to adjusting! ^^;;

No problem. Just I've been piecing together a Bash script to make generating a number a bit less painless (for me anyway), is all, and just wondered if the File Number had an ideal format to take into account while I was writing it.

Its official, UnionVerse will be moving to its brand new home this weekend! This means I need everyone to help me in getting out the word to your super groups and friends so everyone knows the site will be unavailable throughout the weekend. On Monday I will post the link to the new site here with the announcement. I'm sure the new URL is probably fairly obvious to everyone but please remember registration will be locked down during the migration and its easiest for me if the site doesn't have a ton of traffic while I do the imports.

The site will become unavailable @ 1700 EDT / 2200 BST on 22nd of October. (please let me know if I've got the time wrong for BST)

Migration Details
When: 22 - 25 October
What: Migration of UnionVerse to a new server

What content won't be coming over with the import:

  • Page History
  • User Accounts
  • Any images over 150 KB will not be imported
  • Talk pages

What content should be imported:
  • All wiki pages
  • All main namespace content (characters, stories, etc)
  • Categories
  • Templates
  • All images under 150 KB

New Features Preview:

Security:
  • Added ReCaptcha to user registration. Captcha will not appear for registered users.

Content:
Archived Content
The old site will remain active for a month to allow users to get to content that wasn't migrated including Talk pages and any images over 150KB.

Aren't those two mutually exclusive, though? =S

I think it means people will have to remake their user accounts, and then it'll have the captcha stuff.

ReCaptcha will be part of the user registration process. You can see this now on VirtueVerse.

The goal is to avoid spam accounts that have been an issue in the past, so we're adding ReCaptcha to the user registration process and requiring everyone on both Wiki's to re-register in order to ensure spam/nonsense accounts aren't brought over.

You won't see a captcha for anything other then user registration, what I meant is you wont' need to use the captcha for page edits and uploads.

Made sense long before Tech needed it explaining to him.
