Last night... (I would usually post this on the GG thread, but since it didn't happen there, I'm actually kind of stuck as to whether to post it here in the Defiant Thread - I'm sticking it here because it impacts on plots ongoing on Union)

Richard Huntington III travelled to the alternate reality known as Defiant, where he met Callista, a chap called Plasmarch (who happens to be Kit's father), a rather entertaining gentleman called Razgul, a lady called Jessica and a five-foot tall bipedal Norwegian Blue cat who was introduced to him as Kitty (Kitmarch's mother). The reason for the expedition was to gather data on the dimensional signature of Defiant in his continuing attempts to help Callie. He was succesful in this, and only had to endure the odd vague threat to his health.

The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*

But you posted it in the Union thread...

That's cool. No need to worry too much. The link to Union scene is very apparent and thus falls within the scope of this thread.

Next time, how could someone tag along? It sounds like an interesting world, this Defiant.

EDIT: The breathing down my neck to haul butt and go get lunch derailed my train of thought.

Since there is no dedicated thread for Definant RP, what if there was one? It's been said that there's less roleplaying on Defiant and making contacts is a bit harder. If there was its own thread it would serve the whole scene.

Your post, Shadowe, is an excellent one for starting it, for example.

End of the Line - 17th November 2006

The case of missing Winter Heart got a new lead when Fairbanks managed to magically locate her books (it does pay to mark your books with little locator spells. Next we ought to put them to people.) to a location in Hollows. Pyranha and Inago went to investigate and found abandoned looking bookstore. After skulking around the place for awhile they broke in with Pyranha's more questionable detective skills. Inside they found lot of dust, old books and one Winter Heart, snoring next to an empty vodka bottle. When they didn't manage to wake her up, Inago carried her as she was to their apartment in Steel Canyon.

The next day, Winter Heart woke up and found Pyanha watching over her. The girls reunion was shaky but very happy and established that despite everything, they were still best friends. Worryingly, Winter Heart's mother Ingrid was still no where to be seen, and Winter hadn't seen her since their fight almost two weeks ago.

Later that day Pyranha called Doctor Temporis to give him the latest news and day after they met up on Pyranha's request. Her investigations on Winter Heart's mom's location had all came back dry and she was running out of ideas of where to look. Doctor promised to help her and said he'd send some crew over to check her apartment for traces of dimensional, spacial or temporal fluctuations. Or something like that. As well as have some drones to sweep out the city. Pyranha was much relieved.

The matter of Pyranha's GoD-watch was briefly discussed. Inago was dead set against her using it, he didn't see it as necessary and more as way to monitor Pyranha and hence she had decided not to wear it. Doc wasn't very pleased about her decision and since they were right in the middle of trying to find someone, she didn't even have much grounds to say "it's not going to happen to me." But he didn't push it, she was feeling too much between rock and the hard place already.

Doc's robot PRIAM came by the apartment for a scan and Pyranha promptly ushered Winter Heart outside for a walk. During the week she had groomed Winter best of her ability, gotten her haircut, facial, manikyre, waxing and lot of healthy multi-vitamin drinks and salads as well as invigorating walks in the park. As well as lot of girly chatter and gossiping, including detailed descriptions of Pyranha's adventures in Japan. On friday they went to the courthouse, only to wait for long long while and then to be reported that their judge had gotten suddenly ill (or possibly gone golfing) and the new date would be on Monday. Probably Monday.

Elsewhere in Paragon City and Rogue Isles: Subaiku was called to help in one Tempest mission with Coile and Dustine. Also Hikari-Hime and Doctor Temporis were present. They were tasked to stop a scouting party of otherworldly nation that wanted to conquer Earth. Subaiku kept her thoughts to herself and rushed through the battle recklessly, causing some raised eyebrows by her teammates. Afterwards, she headed back to the Isles. Worryingly, she is finding herself to feel in someways more at home there than on Paragon City.

Inaction (16.11.2006)

"So easy just to say
That everything is just the way it seems"

- Boston

Quite early Coile made his way to Pocket D to wait. Militia guy named Mer'de had promised that action would be taken and that an organized search for Nightsparrow would be conducted. Coile was certain that the search would lead to a trap and that Sparrow was dead long since but still intended to take part.

First person to happen by was Love Angel, the young heroine Coile had worked a few times with. Highly excitable, stubborn, bouncy and not afraid to express her opinions were qualities that stood out. There was still the case of Angel going all freefall and then breaking it herself a couple of weeks ago but the point was not resolved this time either. Dustine came along and Angel had to rush off to finish a history assignment.

Dustine recounted how she had tried to curse a bully girl with voodoo when the Goddess appeared to her and changed her life forever. That topic was interrupted when Searing Red, yet another teenaged girl that had come to seek her fortunes in Paragon City walked up. Coile waived at her to join the Tempest duo in their table. The talk centered around Red's past and her avoiding telling much at all.

Finally things started to roll as Keening Banshee appeared. Alas, her news were grim. Militia's main man Force Commander had run off and the rest of the team was after him, so the search was, while not cancelled, postponed. Coile almost blew a fuse but with no leads of his own nothing could be done. The gang was joined by Vigilante Storm who had some sharp observations and tough questions.

Banshee left, Dustine left, Ms. Storm left. Love Angel returned. So. Coile. Two teenagers. Tact, or lack of it. Unhealthy dose of cluelessness and inability to back down. Coile first asked Red's age, then succumbed to arguing that he could understand "girl stuff" because he "lived with a woman" and got stuck in a discussion about breast tenderness during periods. Redfaceness abounds.

The night ended a bit more gracefully than the rockbottom it had hit with Coile claiming not to compete with others by measuring his manhood. He went for a short patrol with Searing Red in Atlas Park and then headed home. The search for dead Sparrow would resume later, when the time was right.

It's such a very thin, thin line between your bad days and your fine - 18.11.06

Last night in Pocket D Pyranha has made plans to meet Inago there. When she got there, the little grasshopper was nowhere to be seen. For a brief moment she enjoyed the victory of being faster, until Inago emerged from the bathroom. Curses on super-superjump. Doctor Temporis was there enjoying a not-so-quiet drink and they discussed the differences between tolerable, fine, good and dreadful week as well as the similarities between hero work and crumbled newspapers. Doc was definetely not as burstingly cheerful as he had been the last few times Pyranha had seen him, but wasn't engaged in heavy drinking as he often has done in Pocket D after a failed mission. PRIAM's scannings at Pyranha's apartment gave no additional information, unless we count negative results as such. If Winter's mom had been teleported out of the apartment, it either left so faint traces the scanners didn't pick them up, or it was done by magical means. Pyranha's next step is to ask Fairbanks if she could detect any portals or teleportations occured in the apartment, if not, Pyr would have to try find a more powerful mage.

Members of Silent Tempest were out having a drinks too. Coile and Dustine exchanged greetings with everyone and they were later joined by a pink wearing quite well developed teenager girl. The girl later came by to ask Doc's autograph to his surprise, Pyranha was amused and Kyo jealous. The discussion about fan-clubs that followed made Pyranha giggle a lot, a mood that was cut short by the appearance of Ghost Moon who made his grand, villanous entrance as well spouting dark and mysterious threats.

At the end of the evening, Pyranha and Coile talked briefly, just enough for him to reveal that Nadia who has been with him for the past months is infact a copy and the real Sword of Truth is still held captive somewhere, or even dead. Then the Tempest girls returned and diverted the conversation into interior design and what color would look best in Tempest base. Pyranha made her excuses then and went home.

A deeper mystery... When Winter Heart decided to have a break from this world, her mother disappeared as well.
Spellsong came to Ghost Tiger Investigations offices to meet Pyranha.
After a brief chat about Winter Heart progress in magic, Spellsong was startled by the sudden and spectacular arrival of Inago, who decided to jump from the street right into the office through the window. Save the said window was shut earlier. Inago crashed through it and had the pleasure to be obliged to try to fix the mess afterward.
The discussion about Winter Heart's mother went from the most mundane theory ("maybe she just went on vacation ?") to the esoteric possibilities.
Spellsong wondered if Winter Heart just didn't send away her mother by accident or impulsiveness, using the "name magic" she is starting to learn.
Another investigation is starting.

Some one's teaching her such magic? Are they clinically insane? Or just even less responsible then Winter? Basic spells to make her feel safe, sure... and coaching her so she'll get the mentality to use it responsibly, but teaching her that... why not just stick her in a box and send her to the Rogues?

So, let me get this straight. There's a somewhat messed up child running around that knows spells to "send people away"?

Oh dear... Cheque please!

"Name magic"

depending on what they use, it probably needs the 'true name' for such, which would be hard to know, even for oneself, but pausible enough for her to know her mother's.
So, she won't be able to 'send people into the cornfield' (spot the reference ) at will/random. But she can probably make her mother do what ever she wants (conciously or subconciously)

Just the basics, really. Nothing fancy. Tho the plethora of naming magic word books and the idle, boring weeks have sort of helped Winter on her way.

Now, what's all the fuzz of a mother being missing? People vanish inexplicably ALL the time. Maybe she went to Aruba or something...

Name magics no biggie... just create a character that doesn't believe in it ^_-

Only if (as far as we can tell), she walked. Without anyone seeing her. Or ever buying anything. No airport logs, cars on camera, train tickets, financial transactions...

The mystery deepens. And then got magic all over it. Eww, magic.

I have no idea what Spellsong actually means with name magic, but since people have commented on that, I'm now curious. Is there some existing tradition what 'name magic' is on CoH?

My only reference would be to Earthsea books by Ursula Leguin, where it
a) wasn't possible to teleport anyone like that
b) not that hard for a good mage to learn person's true name
c) if person's true name was learned, it enabled total control of that person, not just tricks. (and being able to teleport someone is rather far from total control).
d) whether the people believed or not made little difference to the effects.

I don't think Spellsong was doing earthsean naming magic, as there had been talk of power words and such. But I'm just curious why it's said 'ah, naming magic, well then xxx or yyy won't work'.

Some smilies.

I combine infromtation from the Earthsea miniseries, and the NWN expantion pack "Hordes of the Underdark"

Both: With some one's true name, you can command them to do anything, anything at all... even die on the spot.

NWN: It's rather hard to learn someone's true name, most 'mortals' don't even know their own.

EarthSea: Mages can.
Also, I remember where sand was turned into diamonds, temorarilly, because the true name wasn't used.

That last bit leaves me to believe that with a true name, almost anything is possible.
Teleportation, needs a target and a destination (possibly a time or other variables). With a true name being used as the target... I would say it matters not where the target is in corrolation to the caster, and the destination... I don't know

oh, for all we know, she turned her mother into a diamond?
