Trash Talk
Yeah interesting topic, personally yeah i like it and use it, it adds to the feel of the game, but the trash talk i use doesn't have any bad language in it in fact the harshest word i think is [censored] but even then its used in a comical way , making my alt more comical than the insult its self.
Having said that i have received some really nasty private tells from ppl that are way over the line and they clearly cant tell the difference between fun teasing and personal abuse.
Trash talk doesn't need to have bad language in it to be funny, infact the best ones have very little to none in at all and its those that me chuckle at my keyboard.
I get into trash-talk a little bit, usually in response to someone saying something daft on /b though.
I make sure I balance it all out by giving out a "Well done. That hurt, I'll get you!" whenever someone splats me.
I expect a bit of banter back and forth and none of it really bothers me.

You get REALLY sick on there at times though Jaq
I dislike trash talk, it can be funny and add to the experience for those who you know but new pvpers and others can take things the wrong way and sour their experiences.

When someone who has been face down six times in 10 minutes gets on /b while he hides under an Ice Tank's skirts and says how invincible he is, I get a little.... frisky. Yeah.
The one time chat distracted me to the point of letting a Stalker get a kill in, it was actually someone from my SG being perfectly friendly, and I stopped to say something and he ASed me and killed me. You catch more flies with honey, right?
People can use whatever distraction tactics they want, they up to everyone to decide whether to fall for it or not. I dislike trashtalk more for the fact that it can get out of hand, to the point of making the zone unpleasant to be in for some people. That said, if someone starts having a go at me, I'm not above the odd comeback - it just gets really frustrating when someone starts spewing bile about the other side's tactics or abilities. I'm just as likely to stand up for how the villains are playing when I'm on as a hero, though. I don't mind it when people are clearly just having a friendly go at each other or joking around, or are saying things that can be taken as in-character, but when people are just constantly harping on about someone else in the zone or being really insulting, it really starts to bother me, and I don't see how it adds anything to the place.
Trash talk can often get out of hand, especially when combined with trashing of the person in question.
It has its fun factor, but its good idea not to use language that people would find offensive in real life. Also 133t speak isnt cool imo. I try to really avoid it.
If someone is showing symptoms of getting angry, its best to lay off.
Plus its a good idea to avoid spamming broadcast with this. Make binds in local.
Aye, it does need to be 'in character'. A Hero I know once entered Siren's Call and /b "all villans are [known for same sex relations]".
Not really heroic
Who really cares, when I beat someone I trashtalk and if I get beat I say nice one, or something like that, anyway it's not that bad, but if someone pisses you off a little too much just remind em that it's better to call you names to your face rather than behind the safety of a computer.
I think a little lighthearted trashtalk is fine, but only if you have already gotten a good signal. Simply put, no matter how friendly the teasing banter, if you use it against someone you dont know/just met, someone is eventually going to take it the wrong way. I love the playful banter in PVP zones sometimes, it helps ease the stress of being smothered by stalkers all the time. I gripe at them, they gripe at me. I call them scaredycats, they call me liar-liar-pants-on-fire. Amongst friends, this kind of banter is good.
However, if you throw a line at someone you dont know, you cant guarantee how they will take it. Its pointless to just say "I was only messing around, stop taking things so seriously, nerd", because whilst you might be able to get away with saying "I [censored humped] your mother last night" to your best friend, for a laugh, you certainly wouldnt get away with it if you said it to someone passing in the street.
There are limits, and there is no written handbook to tell you where they are. Just use your common sense, and when in doubt, dont.
I think whether you like it or not, Trash Talk will always be a part of PvP zones.
I don't really get frustrated by me being killed, in fact, that's fun! It's the people that get SO cocky when they've killed you, even sometimes when it's 5 on 2....
I'm all for witty, friendly banter and trash talk a la Spidey, but the resort to nastiness or bad language will resort to me sending a polite tell to watch their attitude, possibly followed by a petition. In most instances, petition straight away.
Personally, I don't get bothered by it, what's the point? But others do.
In a bizarre twist, I've found myself saying "nice one, good defeat, never saw you =)" only to find complete silence...? I mean, YAWN, get into it people!

Hit the nail on the head there. With my friends, we call each other all sorts of 4 letter words. If a guy we hadnt met walked up and used the same words, he'd get nailed to the ceiling. Same online as offline.

In competetive gaming, getting your [censored] handed to you is normally half of the fun
I like it personally. Nice break between fights to throw some talk this way and that. Me and Stalk-o-bot like to do that quite a bit hehe. The only time I've lashed out on broadcast has been by accident because if I'm angry due to whatever (usually multiple stalker kills within a short space of time) I usually type what im going to say to them and put it in a different channel, either a private one or the team channel. I make sure my teammates know what i'm going to say is to be ignored. As I say the only time that went wrong was when I thought my default channel was team, typed out my bit and pressed enter only to find I'd set default channel to broadcast :/ oops. Also I agree with the point about not trash talking to someone new, or someone new to pvp or at least with limits. As it's been said you can say something to your best friend and get a laugh whereas to a stranger may result in a hospital trip.
There's always things that you can get away with 100% of the time.
Mine;
'What do you call that, $target?! I've had lovebites worse than THAT'
Set yours to broadcast and away you go.
Trash talk, well here is some

And this is the first time I realised Freon was Imaginary.. bah.
Lot of complaints have gone up about the use of Broadcast, especially Stalkers to undermine opponents.
Personally, I have no qualms about completely hamming into RP territory here, because some of my characters ARE loudmouths; also as Spidey has often shown, annoyed characters make big mistakes.
Just want to hear people's views? Trash Talking part of PvP or not?
