Hows Gravity?

I hear a lot about MC and stuff, but hows Gravity? is it good or bad?

Provides a lot of single target damage. Is good solo. Has some trouble keeping up with other primaries in AoE control, but the gap can mostly be filled by an active secondary such as Rad.

It's not good, it's just not bad either. Give it a whirl, it's certainly fun.

Doom.

Yep.

This is really doom.

You might want to take a 'wait-and-see' approach with Gravity... at least see if the current Wormhole issue is proven groundless, or if there is an actual bug.

Right now, it seems that the teleport effect of wormhole can hit, but the stun still miss. Which reduces the effectiveness of Wormhole dramatically...

It's OK, but could use some tweaks. It's greatest problem is that it has no hard AoE controls until 26, instead of 12 like other sets. Getting a Grav/ to 26 tends to be a pain.

Its a cool fun set for solo or small teams.

On large teams you get the following problems:

- Dimension Shift really annoys teammates
- Wormhole mildly annoys teammates
- Propel takes so long to animate that your target often dies before it lands.

Solo, all these problems evaporate and you're left with a great Blasttroller set.

Your guide is a bit out of date, but still has some nice strategy suggestions.

After years of looking down my nose at Gravity, I finally committed myself to getting one high enough to get to the better powers. I have been playing a Grav/Storm quite a bit lately, almost entirely solo. And I have to say it has become one of my favorite solo characters.

I was critical of Gravity for several reasons:
(1) it has very low AoE control. In low levels, your only AoE control is an immobilize, which I barely consider to be AoE control. Then you get GDF, suffering the usual problem of AoE holds (Accuracy penalty, short duration and looong recharge). I had trouble making it to level 26 to get to Wormhole.

Even Illusion's Phantom Army provides good AoE distraction as an effective form of soft control at 18 . . . and that lasts for 60 Sec. Every other set has some kind of good AoE control by level 18.

(2) Grav is pretty boring, with the exception of three powers, Propel, Wormhole and Singularity. And Propel's long animation makes it mostly worthless on teams. I had teamed with several Grav controllers, and was never impressed with their power sets . . . not like the impressive effects of Ice Slick or the several Earth AoE powers.

(3) All sets have a power or two that are skippable either because the effects are not all that useful (AoE sleeps) or have limited benefits for teams (single target immobilize). But usually even the skippable powers had some easy-to-see benefit. While the Single target immobilize was skippable on most sets, it is an important power for Gravity controllers, indicating how weak the set was. And then there is Dimension Shift, which was widely viewed as a stinker (along with all other Intangibility powers).

(4) Gravity had decent amounts of single target damage, but only the Hold would keep the foe out of the fight. Compare this to Mind, which has single target damage with more powers to keep the foe out of the fight. The AoE damage is virtually non-existant, lower than any other set other than maybe Ice. (Even Earth has Stalagmites.)

But solo, I have found that Grav/Storm is really quite fun . . . not necessarily fast, but fun. The single target damage of GD-Crush-Propel does pretty good damage. It seems to require more strategy than most sets. I have to gage whether the DoT will be enough to finish off a foe, or if I need another attack. I find myself doing a lot of "duck and cover;" Pulling one foe, hiding around a corner to avoid damage from the others while I take the one out. Hurricane, rarely used with other */Storm controllers, has become a key power to hold off others while I take down one foe.

And then there is Wormhole . . . a really fun power that requires some strategy to use well. I have to find a lot of ways to hide from the aggro while it activates, but when it does, it is fun to throw foes up against the wall or ceiling, or even straight up in the air. Then I have to figure out what will keep the foes busy while I take then down one at a time -- Freezing Rain + Crushing Field, or Thunderclap or Hurricane, or even Hold one, Gale the rest so that I can hide around a corner.

At level 29, I'm really looking forward to getting Singy, and then those nice juicy late storm powers. So, I have to say, as a long-time controller, that Grav/Storm has been a lot of fun to play and a bit of a challenge.

Most of what you say is true Local, and it is an extremely long road. Because Sing is also, by consideration a key part of Grav's AOE control. Letting him take the alpha, allows you to get your wormholes off seamlessly. And then you finally get your AoE damage at 38 which allows you to rip through the mobs.

Anyway, the challenges that you mention especially solo, are also part of the reasons I love to play my grav/storms.

Anyway, I am just about to get back into the game, and I will update my guide after I find out what has changed...

And actually instead of my own death being part of the learning curve, can you tell me what has changed with the powers over the last year?

Local Man,

You should also try a duo with another grav/storm, esp once you have Singularity, and ESP once you also have lightning storm. 2 thunder claps stacked, 2 lightning storms, 2 freezing rains, and 2 singularities along with all the other goodies is extremely fun. I played mine with a friend on occasion, who had a similar build, and its a neat little duo.

All pets are now immune to recharge buffs and debuffs, so you can't boost Lightning Storm's strike rate with Hasten anymore.

The biggest change to Gravity I can think of is there are more objects on the list of things Propel can shoot.

The change to Pet Recharge goes a little farther than that . . . it used to be that sets with Recharge would boost the recharge rate for Lightning Storm, making it do a LOT more damage . . . but that was nerfed, so that Recharge in any pet, like Lightning Storm, only boosts the recharge time needed to cast another one, and has no effect on the frequency of lightning strikes.

I have duo'ed my Ice/Storm with another Storm . . . Actually, it was Mental Maden's Storm Defender, and it WAS a lot of fun. Unfortunately, my Grav/Storm is over on Protector. But I can see where two Grav/Storms together would be effective, as long as they communicated with each other regarding when and where to use Wormhole.

Grav/Storm was my first 50 and made me deliriously happy. I'm WAY more into playing the game than pwning the game, and there are certainly faster, more controlling, and more damaging sets. Actually, because of character concept, I skipped Wormhole & Dimension Shift entirely. (a storm 'troller for whom grav powers = high velocity winds.) But yeah, it's incredibly fun. And argue the value of Propel all you want, but there are few more entertaining powers in this game. Smacking somebody upside the head with a forklift is freakin' awesome, no matter how long it takes to activate!

You know...it's funny.

I saw a Gravity controller on my team durning my first week in the game and was like "Wow, what a cool power set". So I made one. That was a few months after launch.

I now have a Grav/Kin as my main on both Pinnacle and Virtue.

It's my favorite toon to play. Without question. I hear about all these issues that Gravity supposedly has, and usually my response is "Really? I hadn't noticed."

I love the set. I love the feel, I love the effects, I love what it does.

I play alot of controllers. By and far my favorite AT. I keep coming back to Grav/Kin.

So, Shyft... how do you come up with enough control to keep things locked down during levels 1-25? Or do you have some other playstyle? (damage? team support?) I'm really curious. I've tried Gravity several times and never found what I contribute to a team. I want to know your secret, because I really want to get to Wormhole and Singularity some day. Running myself out of endurance with wimpy single-target damage has not been entertaining so far.

I used to "talk down" the Grav control set, but I really wanted to get to Wormhole and Singularity. I teamed Grav with Storm. Crushing Field + Freezing Rain is a knockdown area with massive debuffs. Add Snow Storm to debuff Recharge and it is almost an AoE hold.

Another option is to team it with Rad. Crushing Field + Radiation Infection is almost a hold, too. The foes can't move out of RI's AoE, and they have a lot of trouble hitting you.

And, I mostly solo'ed my Grav/Storm. It wasn't very fast, but actually took some strategy. I have finally gotten my Grav/Storm up to 39, and look forward to every chance I get to play him (but I'm working on several alts now).

I have long considered Grav/Rad and Grav/Storm the best combinations for holding my interest in Grav, but have never had a concept that fit them well enough to play (I'm one of "those" kinds of altoholics). I currently have a Grav/FF with a sci-fi theme, I've wanted a Grav/FF for thematic reasons since I bought the game, but it's a tough set to stay with. Right now I'm hoping that "juggling" will hold my interest, lots of KB/KU. We'll see... it's a pretty weak form of control, the enemy is out of the fight for barely longer than you are (due to the animation).

I'm serious in asking what the Grav lovers see in it (pre-Wormhole, and beyond picking a strong secondary). What makes it worth playing? I want to find the fun! But all I do is weak damage, weaker control, and running out of end.
