SUPER CONSPIRACY THEORY II!

This is my second SUPER CONSPIRACY THEORY in the same number of months.

With the upcoming announcement of power customization in Issue 16, which we were told was "impossible"...

and the upcoming announcement of side switching which was considered "improbable"...

and the announcement of a "new" character creator that will allow us to make characters in any order we choose to without having to constantly go back and forth like we do now...

I see four possible answers to what's happening here, with these SUBSTANTIAL changes in the game that were not considered possible or realistic in the past.

This list is in order from least likely to most likely:

<ul type="square">[*]1. Paragon Studios is now going to license the "new" Champions Online game engine from Cryptic instead of the one they are using now.[*]2. Paragon Studios has been busy designing a BRAND NEW game engine that will work with all of their "pre-existing" code that they wrote for the old engine and will slide the "old" engine out for the new and stop paying Cryptic once this is done.[*]3. Cryptic has or will soon sell Paragon Studios the "complete rights" to the engine outright, and thus Paragon Studios will/does completely own the engine code and can completely disassemble it/change it as they wish and no longer have to pay license fees to Cryptic.[*]4. Paragon Studios, with their new SUPER HUGE MEGASTAFF have been spending all their time revamping new code that will work "outside" of the game engine but still with the engine and will allow them to do what they want to do without changing the basic engine of the game. They still have to pay license fees to Cryptic FOREVER! Muahahaaaaa![/list]
I'm REALLY hoping that #2 is the correct answer, and I'd also be thrilled if #3 was, but I have a sad feeling that we're stuck with #4. Oh well. Either way, the fact of the matter is, the game is being revolutionized, one way or another.

Only time will tell what this does for the game's community and longevity, but I'm hopeful and optimistic.

P.S. I think too much.

Whoah, I have my own slash command now? What does it mean?

My guess is "IBTL" and "PostKount +1" combined.

I use it in threads that remind me of you in that "this is totally unnecessary, yet I'll read it anyway" kind of way &gt;_&gt;

Good to know that I'm "totally unnecessary but worth reading".

Not you, your threads!

I mean they aren't "necessary", but they're worth the read anyways.

Never impossible. Never.

"Unlikely" was the word used when the Developers were down to a skeleton crew and they, frankly, had bigger, better things to create and develop (regardless of the opinions of them, if you're still here, it's obviously not that big an issue), so they had to keep putting this heavily requested item on the back-burner or shelf. Even saying it was on the back-burner indicated that they were toying with the system to see if they could get it to work.

I remember Positron explaining that they'd run into the wall of "We can make it work from the skeleton, but not the collision" (HEAVILY paraphrased; it's more of a summary, actually, and not a particularly accurate one, either).

God dammit... How is this even remotely likely? You do realize the amount of work it would take to not just transplant, but completely write over the game engine with another one, right?

For instance, their bundles of numbers for characters aren't the same as our bundles of numbers for characters. In order to keep things as they already are (assuming players would want to keep their 50s, enhancements, Invention Origin buffs, etc.), the developers would have to go through each and every possible power combination and enhancement slotting and find the proper translations between one set of code and another.

And for every minor flaw, the rightly angered cries of the playerbase will scorch these boards to smoldering cinders.

What this idea proposes is an extremely massive undertaking that I would recommend to Satan for tormenting embezzlers. But for Mortal Earth, this would simply be a death knell for the game and company.

Great way to get up that post count to get that shiny title of Forum Cartel and Cuppa Incarnate...

It's been specifically stated that this current engine is capable of MUCH more than they use it for currently, and a new engine is simply unnecessary.

Interesting theories, PK. It's always faskinating to watch your mind at work!

To any doubters, that does tend to debunk the theory of the lack thereof. :3c

That's why I have it as the least likely, Grey, for MULTIPLE reasons. Difficulty to implement is among those.

I think the point there is that he at least doesn't make threads as often. Or something.

I was going to originally say more, but decided I'd attempt being polite. So, instead, have a cat.

Well. It is Nethergoat we're talking about. :/

I'm kinda confused. Isn't the point of every thread on the entire forum either to express an idea or opinion OR ask a question to which you don't know the answer or would like to know peoples opinions of?

Seriously. What other points are there in posts and threads? You're either expressing or asking. That's all there ever is. Just because the idea or question involved doesn't appeal to some people doesn't mean the idea or question is invalid.

Personally I'm hoping for the second of the four options as well. And I think you've, more or less, captured our chances of each of the four rather well.

In short: Ignore people who post pointlessly on the pointlessness of posting pointless threads while attempting to make a point that the points you're making are pointless. They don't understand how posting works.

Now, NOTHING is impossible!

Yes, I know half of you will be cringing about this. Just be thankful that I didn't start a new thread for it like I was going to.

#5: Paragon Studios announces a new game after realising that having all your eggs in one basket isn't the best idea.

That's where the new engine will come in. There's got to be a few engines floating around NCsoft that could be used if licensing something off Cryptic is beyond the pale. I'd be looking at the Guild Wars engine - it allegedly scales better with older machines and its netcode is meant to be first class (since it was designed by the ex-Blizzard guys who cut their teeth on Bnet, it should be!).

I've supported the idea of CoH/V moving to a new engine in the past, but if it doesn't do it with Going Rogue it isn't going to happen at all. And all that time spent doing something in the Cryptic Engine like powers customisation means that moving to a new engine - and redoing all that work - probably isn't going to happen.

You are making a big assumption there.

I thought NCSoft bought - not leased - the game engine when they bought CoX in its entirety, and keeping the Cryptic logo around was just part of the deal.
