And let me be the first to rain on the parade: I hope there is an option in the graphics settings to turn off custom power FX and just show the standard ones.
Two reasons: I know I'm not the only one who won't care for pink dark melee and what not, and there are still a lot of people on slow connections who won't enjoy the increased lag from the extra data that will be sent to them when someone uses a customized power.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's not raining on the parade Laz, that is a valid point for a lot of users, I wouldn'tbe surprised if they have worked up an option in graphics settings
[/ QUOTE ]
I am willing to bet that it's not going to be an option, for one simple reason -- when it gets implemented, the patch is going to change the client so that it will render all powers exactly the same whether or not they have custom colors defined; part of the patch will be a server update to make the database change to add the color indices to the powers and populate them with the default colors. The extra data will consist of two one-byte indices per power (primary and secondary colors), plus two bytes per character (primary/secondary colors for the theme). That's less than 100 bytes per character, and only needs to get transmitted once (just like the costume elements for a character don't need to be retransmitted every time you turn away from them and then look back). Oooh, massive transmission load.

Weird story:
I created my Tanker with Energy Melee under the hopes of one day being able to dictate which color each punch would be and gave said Tanker a rainbow-hued costume. The name is Dr. Spectrum.
Each attack can now be a different color of the spectrum as originally intended.
I'm excited by this.
Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!
Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.
Just read this email I got from the Facebook group. I cannot believe how amazing this ish is gonna be. I was so happy, that it made me consider renewing my membership in Feb when it runs out... I'm suddenly finding a renewed hope for this game.
However, I have a predicition based on the Proliferation... I imagine that all these mergings of groups is a slow process of merging all the Archetypes and creating a system where all archetypes have access to various versions of each power (save masterminds powers). Possibly even something as unique as the individual power selection that is the cornerstone for CO.

The "extra data" would be pretty inconsequential even to a modem user running at 36K.
I'm against turning off seeing custom colors, too. People are forced to see what color my underpants are, there's no reason to hide any other parts of my costume. Can you disable my pink assault rifle? My cape?
[/ QUOTE ]
I'll all FOR being able to disable it.
I shouldn't be able to see your hot pink blasts if I don't want to.

If we can't turn off seeing your baby-blue-with-flourescent-pink-and-green diaper-and-bondage-mask costume, what makes you think you'll be able to turn off seeing our custom power effect colors?

At least one person I've talked to has already misunderstood the character creator feature as something that can be done anywhere after creation (switching IDs, switching ATs, etc). I'm hoping that most of us don't get confused and TOO excited about it.

I'm also on the boat of 'Not able to disable custom powers.'
If I have to see your god awful costume of a pink power ranger on the huge build type with a dragon head, you're gonna get to see my pretty pink energy blasts.

But how am I going to explain it to my kids when they ask "why is that man using pink energy? Pink is for girls, he isn't a girl!" WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

THe only thing I'm worried about is the one article I read that said "with power customization comes people hurling brown fireballs to resemble fecal matter..." (paraphrased). God lets hope someone doesnt make that hero "Sh!tman" or "Skidmark"....

Those two will be first out of the gate, as they all collide in a doorway a la the Three Stooges with Fecal-Matter Man. [sigh]
Which is why all variants of brown or yellow should not be avaliable as custom colors. I realize that kind of sucks for people with earth-themed characters, but I think we can safely say at this point the the playerbase has zero desire or self-discipline to police itself.
Unless they want to enable right-click-off re buffs, which would also be ok with me.
I don't think it will really increase from what already happens. People already make unfortunate characters with unfortunate names. It isn't as bad as it used to be, but you still have some poo-ness in earth sets.

When you list Spines in the color customization powersets, does that mean only the toxic green spray that tends to emanate with the spine's attacks, or will we actually be able to make our spines blue/pink/black/etc.?
They would be shooting themselves in more feet than they have on the whole team if the customizing wasn't about the banana geometry.

I have always believed we would get Power Customization. It didn't matter how hard the Devs made it sound, it didn't matter how frequently the Forum Know-it-Alls would dismiss it, I always believed it would come. Once Champions Online announced the feature, it became a question of when, not if, CoH would implement it. This feature for CoH has knocked any potential interest I had in CO from about 80% down to about 20%.
A few random thoughts:
Generally I support as many options as possible in the game but, in this case, I hope they DON'T allow customization to be turned off. Designing a character is as much for other people as myself -- it's how I want my character to be perceived. (You think I would iron my clothes every night if no one saw them?) If someone doesn't like the colors of my powers -- well, don't team with me. But they shouldn't get to decide how they view my character. I've left many a team because I found someone's costume to be a garish eyesore, but that doesn't mean I should have the power to alter how they want their character to be perceived.
I really hope Travel and Ancillary powers are made customizable. I would love to be able to make the Power Glide an icy blue for my Ice Blaster.
For now, I'm perfectly satisfied with the level of customization announced -- but I hope they continue to expand. I would love to be able to chose my emanation points -- to chose to have blasts come from my hands, or eyes, or mouth, etc. Not to mention alternate sources, for example, Radiation blasts coming from a gun or Fire blasts from a wand/staff.

Parsing time! Does this statement mean each =power= gets an alternate animation, or that there is just =one= animation for the powerset?
Discuss.

That's true, it only took a year or two. Not difficult at all.
In complex projects more people does not equal faster development of difficult features. The inverse has been shown to be true in real world anecdotes and actual studies.

Based on the fact that you will be able to choose colors for each power in a set, I'm guessing that for each power in SS/MA, you will have two choices of animation. If you really like the old SS anims, but hate KO blow, you can swap that out for the new one.
That's my prediction, anyway.

'Other features to be announced.'
I remember plenty of other Issues where people have said 'there has to be more than this', but this is the first time I've seen them actually SAY so.
So, we know for a fact there's more to I16 than two eagerly anticipated player-demanded features and a whole heap of power proliferation.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, they've said 'Other features to be announced.' in many other issues. The thing is that the initial press release has the vast majority of the features and the stuff announced later is minor in respect.
[/ QUOTE ]
Have to say based on history usually this is the case.
But history really hasn't mattered lately.
[/ QUOTE ]
I hope history is wrong in this case. It would be a tough pill for me to swallow if the only dev created mission content for 2009 was the TF and SF from issue 15.
At least, I can not think of any other dev created mission content from the last two updates. Did I miss any???
Go Team Venture!
I'm thinking the same as MG. You'll probably get the "theme" and the "individual customization" choices just like particle powers.
2 story arcs in Issue 13.
I feel ya, though. The developer content output has been very disappointing.

Until they visit the market and all the usual spamming that occurs there. Compared to that the first mothership/Hami raid is going to melt some copper.
Think about it, the client will not be able to know who you will be coming across and always preload the data ahead of time. Therefore you'll be sent all that extra data EVERY time anyone uses a customized power.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're sent a lot of data already. The extra bits needed to identify additional colors shouldn't be that much of an increase.
