What to do about newbie Dominators
Tell them it works exactly like a brute's fury bar.

More and more I'm finding low level Doms, even those who have been playing COH as a whole longer than I, who have no clue how Domination works. When I explain it, they get it, but not until then. What all would people here suggest as ways to get other Dom players to better understand how the AT works?
[/ QUOTE ]
How about you just let them figure stuff out on their own?
Until i played a brute, i never understood that your fury bar raises from being attacked as well. I just didnt care enough to find out i wasnt playing brutes.
If they are truely new to dominators im sure they are giving them a try due to the word that dominators got damage buffs. Let them figure it out on their own. Yes if someone has questions about how a power works or whatever i would say answer it, but this idea that for some reason we have to be holding the hand of all the new dom players is getting irksome.
No one held our hands, no one held my hand 5 years ago, its trial and error. And how i choose to play my dom isnt the only way to play it. When i choose to click domination isnt the only time it should be done. Its when i do it. And if they want to ask me why ill tell them, but im not going to go around spreading the gospel of domination to other players. I have always found the weakest players are those that do what they do only because they have been told to do it that way.
The strongest players are the ones that gain that experience on their own, through their own playing and experiences.

Amen I agree as well. People will play the AT how they feel . I still remember trying to convince a Mind/Psi dom that going into melee to use Drain Psyche and PSW was a good idea. It didn't work, his response to me was that I should stay out of melee and spam Psi Dart and aid other..which is what he did.
In the end players are going to do what they want. The good ones will search google and the forums to find the info they need to play the AT effectively. And even though the guides are old most of the information is still good.

I'm not meaning optimal play preferences (which will vary in opinion), I mean...basics. This discussion came up in the I15 tests about the fact that people who are interested in the AT have no clue what the Inherant is. Every other Inherant is either so passive that you'll never really need to know what it is or so blatant that you have no way not knowing. Domination has to be consciously activated and there's nowhere in the game that tells people that.
I figured it out on my own. Can't be that hard.
I figured it out this way..."hey that buttons glowing and making noise. What happens if I push it? Awesome!" Discovery is 1/2 the fun.

Sorry, I disagree. If you had this concern in issue 15 beta then why didn't you voice it then when something "might" have been done about the scenario. Fact is that activating domination is no longer a necessity for extra damage and mitigation. Lowbie doms really don't have to worry about "domination" except as an end bar filler. Dominator's have essentially been dumbed down just like pvp was dumbed down. If you are running across players that can't play the AT in your opinion then just hope they are having fun and be glad the AT popularity might be boosted.( I srs want to barf right now).
On the other hand who are any of us to tell any player whether new or old how to play? If the players irritating you are having a fun time it is really poor form for you to be Mr?Ms KnowitAll with a playing lesson.
Reality check? Maybe they like how they are playing and having a fun time. Maybe they could give a rats [censored] if they are doing it " right" or "wrong".
Just a few thoughts.
No offense.
Who are any of us to tell any player how to play their dominator? In addition, doms now are a walk in the park compaired to dominator's at Cov's release.
Anyhow? Happy Hunting!

Well, first off, if you can still edit your original post, I would type out your explanation of how it works. That way if someone reads the thread they will have the explanation.
You said the explanation works, so why not explain it?
That includes posting it here, btw. Some players will read this trying to find out why you think that they don't know what's going on and you aren't say much other than they don't.
I know how I use Domination. I don't use it the same way some do. I definitely don't set it off as soon as it is charged. I save it until I am completely out of end and really need it. That is to say, even if I'm out of end if I can keep up with the battle with the recharge rate of my powers and the recovery rate of my end is keeping up, I don't set of my domination even if it is fully charged.
One thing that starter Doms should know is that they need to fire off primary powers rapidly to build up the dom bar, so using recharges, hasten, and using end redux to make sure you can use your primaries as quickly as possible is key to keep the domination charged as much as possible.
I definitely want my dom bar charged or at full end so that I can get the dom bar filled so I can set if off as quickly as possible when I'm fighting a boss.
The doms do play differently. I have Plant, Fire, and Cold doms (maybe some others, but that is all I can say for sure off-hand). And they do operate differently, but for the most part I use domination the same way. ... basically, as a "get out of jail free" card.
And Dom's are squish, so keep your range. May players just have to be up in the thick of it, but squishes have ranged attacks for a reason and that distance is defense. Melee attacks are more powerful than most ranged attacks versus a squishy so stay out of melee range. I fight at the full length of my range if at all possible, and that includes falling back if an enemy is trying to close with my character.

Perfect example of why i would NEVER offer blanket advice on playing a dom, and especially unsolicited. Everything you just said here i find to be complete B.S.
I am pretty much in the thick of it with my doms, I wont say 100 percent of the time, but i am rarely at the limits to my ranged attacks, im probably normally not at the limits of my level 38 ranged attacks.
And this is my point, i guess you developed one style of play, i developed another. Neither is wrong, just wrong for the other. Both ways will get the job done, i just find mine more fun. However if i was teaming with you i would not tell you why your doing things wrong. Just as if i was teaming with a newb, i am more then willing to answer his or her questions, but otherwise their on their own as far as im concerned. Cause if i say "get your [censored] i melee range and drop a quicksand and earthquake" he doesnt learn why that would be a safe thing to do he just does it. When he finally sees other do it, he goes and looks at the powers and notices the -def, the -tohit etc and then understands why he can do it.
Sigh staying out of melee and not using your heavy hitting attacks are why most people thought there doms sucked IMHO.
Mezzing things then moving in to finish them off is best as far as I'm concerned. But this is why its best to not offer advice on "how to play a dom".

Depends on the dom. I don't see incinerate as a good enough reason to close on my fire/fire, and I don't see Power Push as a good enough reason to not close on my mind/nrg. All I can really offer as overall advice is that Assault sets are weird.

I agree. Let people figure it out on their own. If they can't take a few sec to read the inherent description then all well. Not to mention if they miss the glowing button that starts out in the one of the first few power slots...
If doms haven't been dumbed down enough yet then they will all whine like before and Castle can further lower the AT by making domination automatically click, or do a pop up window the first time it is charged (actually the latter isn't a bad idea). But ya.
It's not a brute, it's not a MM, but they want it to be. You'll never be able to correct even a tiny percentage of them. Not enough to prevent them from getting Castle's attention if it is even a small issue for them.

meh, I go out of my way to help a LOT of people in this game. Anyone that has ever sent me a PM, or asked questions on these boards will likely attest to that. I also help a LOT of people in game. If they ask how something works I show them how to drag things into the chat bar so it pulls up the detailed power info. That feature will take care of 99% of newb questions. I'm not interesting in helping n00bs. If they progress beyond being a casual player and need more complicated questions answered they will come to these boards. In game info is more than enough for a casual player, show them how to use it.
I know a girl that recently bought a new car, her first car in fact. She kept asking me question after question about some of the simplest things and I kept responding, "have you looked in the owner's manual?"
You can spoonfeed all the information you want to people, but if they aren't even willing to read the basic power description (I know some are awful) then what you are telling them either isn't going to stick, or you are just being an enabler.

Careful, you'll attract the trolls. Leaving yourself open like that is as tasty a treat as brains are to zombies. I agree with you though.
My take on it is this: Sometimes you just gotta let the Blaster die. It's the only way he'll learn.
I do think there needs to be a better in game explaination on how it works. I have met a dom in the past that got to the 40s before she ever used domination. Because when she first so the power in her tray it was greyed out so she couldnt use it, she deleted it. I had to tell her how to get it back in her tray and explained what the power does. At first I wondered how can anyone not know about the power, but then I had to step back and look at the bigger picture. Chances are all these new players popping up probably saw some dom kicking [censored] in an AE mission and decided to roll one. Because these players dont come to the forums and read every single dev posting or been participating in betas they are not going to know the ins and the outs of the game. I think the issue here is majority of the forum players forget this and make it seem like its the noobs fault. Everyone has to remember we were all noobs at one point. Someone had to tell you too, or put you in a position to learn about something in game whether it was domination, mez protection, how enhancements work, how to craft, etc... We all must not forget this ever because the minute we do, we could turn someone off to this game because they will think the community here is bad and that folks dont want to help noobs. Some of you may see changing things as dumbing it down, I see it as making things more accessable so more people will play the game overall. More active accounts means more revenue which means more added features to the game at a later time.
Case in point I used to hate support ATs with a passion because they are slow to level and die easily if not played well. By focusing more time on those ATs it actually helped me learn to play the melee toons better by knowing the limits that my allies have and how working together by understanding how powers interact it made teaming more effective to me. A good example of this would be if a brute player would always spam their patron aoe immobilize over an ice slick. If they had played a dom then they could understand why they shouldnt do this. So in short please be kind to noobs because someone was kind to you at some point in your CoX career.

-Edit due to question asked-
Generally I just team with them and we go at it. After a full mission or two I notice that they got the little Domination sparkles and I can hear the noise but they haven't activated it despite trouble spots in the mission and/or running out of End. I'll ask a question along the lines of "Do you know how Domination works?" which is generally met with a "What's that?" type reaction.
I'll point out how the orange bar is full and direct them to the Domination button. Generally the wording will vary pending on how fast they notice the two. Usually they notice the bar faster than the button. I'll mention the Domination will refill End, make holds last longer, and act as a Breakfree. I don't try to mention mag since I don't know the proper way to explain it.
Some people attempt to use Domination as soon as they get to the next spawn while others wait till they run out of End. They are usually impressed with the results and naturally pick up a few things. When it runs out, I let them know that more attacks will refill the bar. We continue for some more missions before one of us logs out and they use Domination as they see fit.
The link Southern Comfort posted farther down was interesting not just from the link itself but from something she said in it that essentially amounted to the concept that "Common sense isn't common". People simply don't know what Domination is. It's disappointing that I feel the the Dom forums may have been the "wrong" place to post my question since it's more of an issue of how to educate the basics (which may require expanding the original tutorial and thus would be a Suggestion) as opposed to the advanced stuff that would be more appropriate for the forum. As good as ParagonWiki and most parts of the forums are, they aren't in-game and thus a number of people will never get the full benefit.
