Vanguard are supposed to be the kind of challenge melee archetypes claim they want then are stunned and offended when they receive. Then they beat the Vanguard, and brag about that instead, proclaiming them easy.

The only person my dom had trouble with in that whole arc was Tendaji. I couldn't take that ^%#@$* down no matter what I did. I finally had to get help against him. Everyone else was easy IMO.

My Scrapper was once nearly killed by a lieutenant (yes, a lieutenant, singular) in an AE mission. I was Kat/SR. The critter was Inv/SS. With Rage, it was consistently hitting me for over 600 damage - around the level of most AV ranged attacks - and it had high lethal resistances plus Dull Pain, so I couldn't kill it faster than it could kill me.
Then I soloed the AV at the end while half-asleep.
Vanguard are nasty indeed. They come as a helluva shock to melee AT players that are used to basically auto-piloting through missions. You actually have to use strategy and skill to kill them, button-mashing tends to get you killed.
My BS/DA is the only one of my melee types that wasn't getting his butt kicked by them, and that was because I just left the minions alone after my Oppressive Gloom stunned them and left them wandering around to fuel my Dark Regen.
My Claws/Regen and DB/WP were getting chewed up by them. I finally got through the arc, but it was definitely a war of attrition. Sheer stubbornness got me through it.
On the other hand, my Sonic/Devices blaster ripped through them like tissue paper.
I can see them being challenging for an MM as well.

You might have had the bugged version that said 'EB' but was really AV class. He's been known to do that.

Vanguard are designed to be nasty to certain type of ATs which normally don't have difficulties. Vanguard Rangers will chew up melee types faster then they can say WTH? However ranged players or those with lots of controls they are a cakewalk. Eliminators and Sergeants can be nasty for those w/o DEF or Controls. The Bosses are just nasty especially with the accursed End Curse. The Sorcerers has a wide range of damage types. And the Bosses have nasty AoE attack which can decimate MM henchmen very quickly which is what you encounters. Yet my Tankers and Kheldians have handled them w/o much difficulty.
I just finished Gaussian's Stop the Renegades which was the finale of that arc on challenge 3.
Now, the first Boss I come up against is Renegade Leader Gen. K. Alito (Purple Boss). I have handled plenty of purple bosses so I wasn't to worried. This ornery guy sucks down my bots like they were Pez. I didn't get defeated but came dang close. Had to resummon Protector and most of my Battle Drones twice. He resisted most of my knockbacks and knockdowns and he was just nasty. He was comparable in difficulty to some AVS I've gone up against. So I'm thinking this is gonna be lots of fun to kill the rest.
Next on the Agenda was Capt. W.M. Dietrich (Red Elite Boss). So I'm thinking after that Boss I'm about to get chewed up like a beggin' strip. She was cake. All she did was run arund lobbing grenades and nets that did minimal damage at best.
The next Boss Su'ul was the easiest one. I could throw him around like a rag doll and he barely put up a fight.
In what whacked out alternate COH Universe is a Boss 3x the difficulty of an Elite Boss? How does this make any sense?
