I wish people would do this. I mean, this game was meant to be played with everyone selecting a superheroic name and being a superhero. This is why I get so mad when I see people who don't capitalize their names. I mean, that isn't what was intended! And people with numbers on the ends of their names?! Come on! That isn't intended! And what's with everyone talking out of character all the time? This is an MMORPG - roleplaying is intended!
And if they can't even get their names right, I don't even want to know what people are doing to level their characters up. I mean, I bet they're not even reading all the text for the missions and contacts sometimes. This would speed along their leveling rate because they're not taking the time to enjoy the story!

I guess I should have chosen my words better. I dont mean that there is only one way to play and everyone should play the same way. What I meant is in any game there are ways earn optimized results. For example TPing under the walls in an Eden Trial is a lot faster and more effective than breaking them down but I dont think that is what the devs intended. I think finding short cuts is kinda cheating. But again we can agree to disagree.
On a side note I do hate when People have numbers on their name or dont capitalize their name, unless its something that fits like eWarrior or Spartan301.

To get right down to it, I agree with Stray Kitten's assessment.
Farming (not exploiting!!) is part of the game--if the Devs didn't want a method to level toons fairly quickly we wouldn't have sewers nor would the old PI Demon Farms exist.
There are times when its just needed. My personal example--I have a little two-man VG--and the second just made a few tons and signed up to get me bonus prestige. Now I'm not looking for a massive base--just a medbay, stocked workshop and teleporters. Now without farming it would have taken me forever to solo up the extra prestige I needed to make the base worthwhile. I'm not exploiting; just maximizing my potential profit--and a lot of my cash gets spent on prestige anyway. :-)
But the PLers who go from 1 to 50 in a day or so? Not cool with that. They can't play.
Oh...wait...folks who PLed to 50 and can't play their toons, then come to RV to see what's up...well, thanks for the PvP kills badges, suckers.
Come to think of it, PL away. I can use more badges.

I dont know that it is ever needed. I have a three man SG and we managed to get enough prestige to support a workable base without ever farming. Also I thought the devs did away with the old demon farms? I could be wrong.
There are quite a few farmers who I've enjoyed teaming with and respect, Shay you are one I teamed with you as Mentu, but nothing will ever convice me that farming was intended by the devs. Unless of course they were to come out and say they intended for people to farm. To me it is cheating

Well, the problem is my red-side time is limited--very involved with my blue side SG, plus a full time job, plus a Master's thesis. :-) Hence the need to earn prestige efficiently.
When it comes to farming I agree that the risk:reward ratio has to be maintained. I have fun on farms where you can and will die if you're not careful--but I suppose most don't consider these farms?
It's no fun to kill off a whole giant outdoor level in 15 minutes--and fun is why I play. :-)
I remember Mentu :-) Don't call me a 'farmer' tho...I'll do it on occassion for a specific reason, but I prefer exploring content far more (<3 Flashback mishes)
But if farming (to a VERY limited degree!) was never intended, I still dont know why we have the sewers...obviously they're only good to a point, and you can't ride them to 50, but they'll get you to 10 quickly enough.
I guess the big thing we need here is that old university lesson--"Define your terms!"

I think this just highlights that many of us have different ideas as to what constitutes a farmer or farming. Furthermore we have different opinions on whether farming was intended to be part of the game or not.
Good luck with your thesis. I dont know how you find time to play at all. I had to leave the game my last two years of college just so I wasnt tempted to put off a research paper in order to protect Kings Row, and that was just undergrad.

It's only cheating if an exploit is involved.
Everyone pays the same $15 a month and has the right to play however they want to. The only thing that bothers me about farming taking over this game is that they refuse to use the AE channel, and instead spam broadcast, they have lvl 50 VEATs and have no idea how to play, and it makes it hard to easily form full teams to do TFs/SFs, Trials, story arcs, and other Dev created content.
I've also noticed that in most cases it takes a certain breed of player to sit and farm the same thing for hours everyday. This type of person isn't typically the type of person I enjoy interacting with.

Okay, lets say for the most part I have a 50 Fire/Fire Tanker (Which I did a few years back).
Let's say that I want to begin making prestige for my SG base to grow!....how do I do that?
Okay, now some would say do missions......okay if I do mish after mish after boring Malta mana sucking mission in PI what is that? Its farming no? I am now ONLY doing missions for Prestige thats a farm!
Now who is to say that using AE in the same way is any different? Except now there is 0 chance to run out of missions and be able to do it better and faster and still have a chance for some new story lines.
Okay, lets say someone is doing it for PLing. Lets say my same 50 Tank wants to make a second account and PL it, for what ever reason.
Is that not our rights? If COH did not want us to use it that way, if COH really did not want this to happen....it would not be. But since it is we select few will take advantage of it.
Who here on double XP weekend will be using AE for alts? Your now a farmer!

the above thoughts that come across from your post (and others I read as well). so seems to lead to they type of mind set that caused a few post from Positron, and his follow up.
Now I wont say I dont farm as I, get on the heal farm, I do plow through TF for merits. I avoid AE most of the time for personal reasons.
now thinking that just because you pay 15.oo a month for the game you should be able to do anything. You might want to read what you are agreeing to everytime you start up the game and the code of conduct.
best way to get started on a base is see if some pll with help get the 1st 15 ppl bonus so you can get the funds for porters and base plot.

ok old post I am replying to. But I have to disagree with this.
my GF started in Jan of this year, I showed her some ropes on making money by playing the game. She thinkgs Farming as is doing the same mission over and over for purples is boring. She got a 50 in the 1st 2 months, has over 600mil and really made that all on her own.
she took adivce from AngieB, Stray, Ping (on money making - in trying to out ebil me)
returning and new players just need to learn how use what is given to them. There are enough ppl out there that want to sell for the quick money and will pay the by it Noa price (watch pings niche of the week for some good ideas)

all myths, I know I post most of my items for sell that I flip lower than the By it Noa price. I even gone with a low proffit range on one item and still get over 4mil + per piece than offered price. It is not a issue with the ebil but more the person that wants it now and others thinking that is the pirce to pay. Remimber if things dont sell for a marketter they will lower the price.

You make a good point about farmers increasing supply as well as demand. The problem is that when someone buys a recipe they typically slot it. The recipe and salvage used to craft it are then taken out of circulation. The influence stays in circulation. Additionally recipes and salvage can be sold to shops for set prices, if an items value falls below these prices, marketers will sell to the shop thus removing the item from circulation.
On your farming does not equal exploiting point we just disagree.
