Thoughts on Farming(?)
[ QUOTE ]
Where are the boundaries of what's considered farming and what isn't?
How many times do you have to redo something for it to be considered farming? Once you hit 50, isn't it inevitable that the toon will at some point be involved in some sort of farming?
[/ QUOTE ]
Farming is when you do something over and over to gain more money/xp/etc. in this game. Farming isn't always bad IMO but i have to say that this AE farming is really bad. Once you had to work to get the farms like the villains TV mission you had to go through all these other missions also you had to have lvl 46+ to lackey any one which now you can set the mission so all players can be lvl 1 and run a lv50 farm and will live and get xp.
At lvl 50 you do not always farm. There is many things to do such as pvp, TF/SF, Ouro stuff, AV soloing, etc. The farming happens when there looking for cash or badges and a lot of people really don't care about having a ton of cash or badges or doing merit farming.
Are you really sure you want to open this can of worms?
Meh... not really caring. I've done it and will do it again.
How people choose to play and spend their 15 bucks is their business - not mine.
There is a thread for discussions about farming in City Life - CoH & CoV General Discussions forum I believe; the mods wanted the consolidate the conversations. For that reason alone, this could be locked or deleted.
I'm more concerned with the Champion view on it, not the entire gamer's view on it. I don't play with them. I play with Champions.
I'm glad you can justify Mod 08's actions for them. I'm sure they appreciate you doing their job.

It's only a can of worms if people are hats about it.
I'm seriously interested in the thoughts on this in the Champion 'community' server, seeing as this is where I play and where I'll be judged; accurately or not.
Finding teams redside on Champion is difficult, so I'll take what I can get. Alas, that usually means farming. I'm fine with it, for the most part. Most people farm for something or other. Some people farm for experience, some for influence / infamy, others for prestige, and yet others for badges. Personally though, I believe you should earn at least one level 50 character "the hard way" before farming for experience.

That's the problem, someone more than likely will be eventually. Its just the way this sort of talk tends to go.
Anyway, my thoughts on it are live and let live. I do farm with friends on occasion, but not enough to consider myself a farmer.
The only thing that I've never understood is how some people will farm badges and then look down on people for farming influence.. its the same thing, I promise you. If someone can logically prove to me that its different, I will retract my statement but I'm yet to see any objective difference.

That's one of the reasons I'm bringing it up. I 'farm' for badges definitely, and I'm not talking AE badges. I mean how else are you supposed to get the massive Inf badges (On a side note, now with the economy system did that change how we get influence badges?) aside from doing mishs over and over and over again.
I don't see it as any difference. Perhaps we should clarify that the problem we on Champion have with Farming, is EXP Farming? I think that's more appropriate?
I agree with Celestial, teams are hard to come by and I take what I can get.
That said...
Announcing a farm team for your own benefit and not playing the game the right way, go find something else to play.

The main things I see people have problems with is farming inf, exp, and tickets. While I do agree that everyone should earn at least one 50, that's just my personal view and once again, live and let live.
A lot of it is due to the misconception that farming = exploiting which is not always the case. Other than that misguided idea, I don't understand why so many people are against farming.
Also, the number of people who claim to be against farming, but farm for things without calling it a farm is an interesting angle to look at.

I was with you until you said this Gattaca:

...not playing the game the right way....

Saying that someone is or is not playing "the right way" is a bit of a pet peeve of mine and why I tend to stand up for the perceived underdog in debates like this. Part of the fun of an MMO is that there's no "one true way" to play.
P.S. Don't take this personally, just using your quote as an example.

I have this issue from time to time, and redside I don't ever have a team, unless it's AE. I totally know where you are coming from.
I'm not looking to talk about accusing anyone of what they've done or the purposes for what they've done so let's try to keep this on a philosophical level of how and what we find appropriate amongst ourselves and stay on track. Thanks

I thought this was particularly interesting because so many people used to yell and scream about how blasters HAD to be long range, and they weren't meant to be melee toons.
This is obviously a matter of preference. How many people use blapper builds? PvP Energy Blasters? Melee. */Fire uses PBAoE powers, how is that ranged.
Anyways, just because someone does something poorly doesn't mean everyone does. It's easy to say something is wrong or bad because a few people give it a bad name, but does that mean it's the wrong or right way? There isn't one.
Another Prime example, I know plenty of people who when teaming try to avoid death as much as possible, while running an almost pure Pingu team, we don't care, in fact sometimes revel in the idiocy of what we're doing. It's a blast. What's wrong and right don't really play into it.

There might be 40 players who frequent the champion boards, and most of them (judging from history) lean against it, while in some cases managing to partake in it to a degree.
Out of the other few thousand, using only complaints via Broadcasts/Request/PvP & Local channels, it doesn't seem to be an issue with that many subscribers.
Not a case you could win in court, but anecdotal anyway.
I love farming....whether it be PLing an alt, or farming for merits, tickets, influence, or purple/PVP IOs.

If you consider it, how else can one get PVP/Purple IO's? They are insanely expensive as it is, so either you have to farm for the influence to get it, or farm for the drops themselves.
In fact many people are min/maxers and want to Purple out their Toon. Or even IO out their toons. Either way I don't believe through normal play by the time you have hit 50 you'd have accumulated enough Inf (through play, selling drops, etc) to purple out a toon entirely.
I've only been back for a little while though so perhaps there are tricks I don't know for getting a lot of influence relatively fast. But that seems to me like it'd be 'farming' for something.
More on this later, I must leave work!
Personally I find it tedious and don't care for it. However I don't have a problem participating in one if I am bored unless it's a Pl farm. My definition of PL is someone sitting at the door not doing their fair share.
I have had to get Pl's a couple of times in my COH history due to needing a certain toon build for one of my pvp teams, quickly. Not that it makes it right, but when I had to have one I only seeked them from friends in the game that I felt close to and never asked strangers, broadcasted or sent tells to people asking them.
I think most people that don't choose to PL/farm feel the same way as me. Do what you want to do, its your 15 bucks, just don't annoy me with that [censored] by sending annoying tells or broadcasts begging for Pl's.

Without farmers like myself, the market for PVP and purple IOs would be non-existant or the prices would be so high not many people would even bother.
Those people who hate farmers and like to "pimp" out their toons have players like us to thank for there being those types of IOs available on the market.
I cant begin to tell you how many times I've posted an IO when there have been 0 for sale. It happens all the time.
If someone wants to farm, I really don't give a crap. They pay their monthly fee so they can play how they want. All I ask is that they leave me the [censored] alone about it. Anytime I log on a 50, I get endless tells out of the blue "AE farm team, come join" and random invites which make me just want to punch someone through the brain.
Farm if you want, just leave me the [censored] alone, or at least have the [censored] sense and common courtesy to read my message in the search window beforehand, which also essentially tells all farmers and PLers to leave me the [censored] alone. Farmers tend to be rude, which I find inexcusable. I don't interfere in their game-time, so all I ask is that they don't interfere in mine.

I have 5 toons purpled to some extent. I haven't farmed for any of that influence.

Don't take it personally if you think I was mean to you. I'm an ******* to everyone.
It's a penguin thing. Pingu FTW.
I'm not totally against Farming per se, but the motivations with which most use it seem so horribly wrong. I do participate in AE stuff from time to time. Usually when I have nothing better to do. I don't really solo much. I'd rather be on a team, even give a bad one a shot rather than solo. I MMO for the 2nd M part.
This doesn't mean everyone has to agree with me, whatever. However what I did notice, was that when I first came back, even with the same global, it took a while to start rebuilding relationships and getting regular invites to things. And so I did spend some time in AE while tracking down people from the past.
I still will AE. Do I want all boss farms? No. That's just ... I mean... I can't even explain how that doesn't make sense in a mission.
However... I rarely put teams together myself at present seeing as I still feel 'new' to the changes and finally led my first ITF last night and to boot with an atypical team.
Either way, I don't know which Arcs are good, so I depend on others to pick them, I prefer things that aren't 'farms' in AE, but again, I'm trying to make up for some lost time and relearn everything all at once.
I personally would prefer to TF all day long. When I was thinking about this, I realized, you could consider TF'ing farming if you're just trying for merits.
Where are the boundaries of what's considered farming and what isn't?

Don't we do that for badges (BMT!)?
