I want to "get" grav

Help me forumites.

I have every controller, sans grav, up in the 30s and I at least find some enjoyment in each of the sets. But Grav, I just don't understand it, what am I missing? I'm setting up a project gravity character, what pairs well? I need any advice I can get, I've looked at guides, so I have a -basic- idea.

Thanks

IMHO the hot new thing will be to have a bind activating the "alakazamreact" emote every time you use Propel.

Everything else will pale in comparison. :P

Like you, I "got" all the other control sets except Gravity. I have Fire, Ice, Earth and Illusion all at 50, and Plant and Mind in the 40's. Until recently, my highest Grav controller was in the low teens. Then I decided to make a specific effort to focus on a Grav/Storm.

Since I already have several Stormies, I know how the Storm set works, and I saw some interesting synergy with Grav. One unique aspect of Gravity is the immobilize powers do not include -knockdown -- knockdown prevention is in the holds, instead. This means that when I use Freezing Rain, Crushing Field will keep the foes in the area, but not prevent them from falling down making it overall more effective. It also means that Crushing Field + Hurricane will let me push around the bad guys while debuffing their ToHit, making it into almost a permahold.

I have been playing this character, off and on, for the last several weeks. He is now up to 27, mostly solo, and has become quite fun. Grav has a good single-target attack chain in GD-Crush (slotted for damage)-Propel, but is really weak on AoE control -- Storm seems to fill that gap somewhat and will get better ih the upper levels. With the small groups I run into solo, I find that I can turn on Hurricane, pick one guy to hold and clobber, and Hurricane holds off the one or two others. It kind of reminds me of a single target blaster, but with a powerful melee defense.

I have generally been critical of the Gravity set because there are only three interesting powers -- Propel, Wormhole and Singularity. I had never reached two of them before. I'm finally getting to play with Wormhole, and I must admit that it is fun. I dislike the fact that the foes get to take a shot at you during the animation, but it really is a fun power. I'm looking forward to getting a Singy to see the strategy involved with him.

I feel that Storm is a really good secondary for Grav. It provides a lot of AoE control and benefits that fill some of the holes in the Grav set.

Local_Man pretty much covered everything...

I wrote a bunch about my experience with Gravity/, but after reading it I decided it wouldn't really help me at all if I were in your position... I was really just rambling. My main point is (was) that I had to level up and play around with a Gravity controller myself before I could fully grasp, or "get" it. Explanations did nothing for me.

I use something like:
GD - Crush - secondary power - Crush - GD - Crush
I use a /kin and have plenty of great powers to fill in here. The secondary you pick might have a power that fits, or perhaps you could try lift.

IMO, Crush, GD, and Crushing Field are grav's bread and butter. I have stuck to the basics and had great success.

The singularity can really help with the holds, and is rather valuable if you are soloing. Check the range on Singularity, it is not that great. Good adivce I read on the boards was to use stealth of some sort to get close enough for the singularity to attack and take agro, you can then back off to get range and 'let 'er rip'

A variation is to summon the singularity close enough to a group to have it attack/repel and take the initial strike. I have used the singularity to delay an ambush, re-summoning him between the team and the enemies attacking from the flank.

Kins goes well with any troller build. Your a bit vague in what you wish to do with your secondary. Do you want to heal ? buff? , debuff?. Overal Kins covers everything I just posted, but some don't enjoy being SB bots. Rad is also a personal fav, though I did run into a Grav/Rad today in the mid 30's. Obviously debuffing and containment= deathless teams, but still which do you wish to do?

On my Grav/Stiorm, I specifically planned for that -- I took Super Speed for travel, which combines with Steamy Mist for full invisibility. Plus Super Speed gives great battlefield maneuverability.

I was just thinking about the differences between Storm and Kin as secondaries. Kinetics is all about offense, and making the kill faster. Storm is a more defensive set, using knockback and debuffs. I think my style fits the defensive better, but I can see where Kinetics could be effective.

Did they change Propel!? Now all my beautiful assortment of various objects disappear after hitting a mob instead of tumbling around and staying on the map! Please tell me this is a bug ...

No, it hasn't changed. I tried out my Grav/Storm for a mission early this morning, and all the items from propel stayed around. Check your graphics settings, as some settings will make the items go away.

Whew, thanks.

I haven't messed with my settings that I remember and they always hung around before -- I'll play with them and see what happens and report back.

The other relevant point, I guess, is that I was playing on my Grav dominator.

EDIT: Tweaked settings somewhat, but they are what I usually run with -- still no persistnt objects from propel. I don't have a Grav controller to test that it is just my dominator having the issue.

I would like my secondary to help me control, or debuff.

I guess that means storm or rad

Trick Arrow would also seem to pair well with Gravity.

Nothing on the Dominator boards that I noticed about this (not surprising, given Propel's universal disdain among the Dom set -- which is why I brought it up here; was too embarassed to ask there. )

The particle physics settings are what control the objects from Propel, I believe. Make sure you have those on.

That was it! I always have left particle physics off on the machine I'm running on today (and must not have played my Grav dom on this rig before). Simply bumping it to low restored the random object fun. Thanks.

Sorry for the threadjack -- but Propel was what lured me into running a Grav character in the first place.

Lift is cool to use, especially in low ceilinged rooms.
GD then Propel is nice too.
I have a grav/elec dominator is kinda like a Sith/Dark Jedi.
Blueside I have a grav/thermal who is very team-oriented.
I'm loving both characters right now. Fun powers to use.
I imagine the gravity powers as 'force/magic' based telekinesis.
I hope that little bit helps in any way.

I like storm with gravity the best. Having storm as a secondary made me actually feel like a "real" controller. Most other secondaries I tried with gravity I felt more like a weak blaster than a controller.

Level 16 is the key, have both crushing field and freezing rain. They are immoblized, debuffed, and still falling down as well since grav's immobilize doesn't stop knockdown. It gives you a sort of ice slick-like AoE control combo that most other controllers get by level 12, but gravity on its own doesn't until level 26 (wormhole) normally.

Storm is a good secondary for Gravity because it offers some control such as freezing rain and thunderclap, which would make life as a Grav controller much easier.

Radiation is also another popular combo, because Radiation blooms early while Gravity blooms late.

All the control sets are unique, but I think Gravity is perhaps the hardest to get into, purely because of the late blooming effect.

In my experience, grav/storm was about the most painful thing i've played. I LOVE my plant/storm to death. But that lack of knockback in grav's immobilises made Tornado useless for anything but a few laughs (omg that thing is wicked).

Freezing rain and thunderclap, oh for sure

Tornado? Don't use it until you have a tough enemy.. or don't mind mobs scattered into various neighbouring rooms.

This might just be my playstyle though, as so many people recommended Grav/Storm to me.

Grav's single-target hold has a -KB component so you could use Tornado with it to be even meaner to single targets with grav.

I've been very happy with most other controller sets, or at least excited about possibilities (mind, ice). Grav's been one I've wanted to like but I've never been able to grasp a reliable use for it outside of ticking off your own team.

Trapping spawns inside a knockdown zone (and keeping them flopping)? Pulling spawns and placing them exactly where you want them, in total safety? (For bonus giggles, combine the two - have your teammates set up their Tar/Oil/Ice/Earthquake/etc. patch in advance, then drop an entire spawn onto it and lock them in place). Tanking psi AVs while the Invuln/ tanker makes the run back from the hospital again?

I think many people over state the whole GRAV pissing off a team mentality. Yeah it can but that is more a player fault then a GRAV fault.

Ran with a GRAV dom in the new SF last night. She was spot on with wormhole, dropping them right into the brute's lap.

Lift gets over looked frequently, mostly due to is low damage. But its a great mitigation tool that animates pretty fast.

One thing I've heard but yet to confirm is an interesting use of the dimension shift power. With the new changes to "phased" people being able to hit other phased people, you can shift a mob, then shift yourself and beat them while being untouched by anyone else.

Mind you if it works its only a nifty parlor trick but I imagine in the hands of the really creative it can produce some profound uses. Granted its only 30 seconds but a lot can be taken out in 30 seconds.

Can anyone confirm this? and does it work in Pvp.

Im the same, I never "got" gravity. The powers seem all the same to me so I never got beyond level 20 with it.
