I love the AE

Hi Devs,

Thought maybe you could use a pick me up after reading these boards.

I was a member during beta, and the 3 day headstart. I played for about 23 months. I left, I came back for CoV, I left again, I came back for AE.

AE is incredible. You've done a really nice job with it and both me and my friends are enjoying it greatly. We like making missions, especially our own custom groups and backstories.

I like the ease of forming a group, and I especially like the ability to log in, and be playing a full arc almost right away. I don't have to travel all over the server searching for doors in warehouses anymore. Honestly, that was one of the biggest reasons for my interest in this game flagging. All the travel. It really made for some boring gameplay while I was waiting to get to the next mission.

But now with AE, I have instant access to new game content. You've brought MMO's to the next step in their evolution, user generated content.

I'm very impressed with the entire system and the way it's been implemented. Please rest assured that I am enjoying the AE and apparently so are a lot of other players. It has only improved my gameplay experience.

Thanks.

P.S. Players who are planning on responding to this thread in vehement disagreement are welcome to go to the official farming thread and scream their hatred into the abyss.

You think "all the travel" in this game is bad, take a look at other MMOs (to be fair the only other I've really looked at was WoW, which left me feeling me very "unWow'ed" - but I hear stories).

But anyways - yes, AE is pretty darn nifty.

OMIGODS!
EQ! is that still out there?
I want to play my beastlord again!
And I want those uber spells for my Shammy sniff I stopped playing EQ after planes of power

Ok back to CoH
Agreed,
AE is awesome.
I love the idea of creating new bad guys and stories, I'd love a bit more control over mobs and their behavior and placement and I'd sincerely love the ability to narrate or have the beginning contact gave in game hints while you are in the Arc. To better immerse players in the story.

Yeah, games like LOTRO and WoW require you to walk everywhere, and buy or rent a horse. That's right: you have to pay money to go from point A to point B at anything faster than a trot.

But the instant gratification thing is two-edged. There are a lot of cool things to see in the city. Talos Island at sunset is actually very pretty. If you sit in the AE building in Atlas from level 1 to level 50 you will see only a tiny fraction of the whole game.

And, honestly, the game will lose a lot of people if it consists of nothing but boss farms in AE and getting to level 50 in a couple of hours. Would those people have stayed around if they got out and saw the world? Hard to say.

But it's bad PR. The game seem rather pointless to an outsider when people leaving it say things like, "Yeah, I tried CoH. I played for a week farming the same mission and had four level 50 characters. It was kinda boring."

I agree that AE is really cool. If people don't want to get out of their shells, that's fine by me. The only problem is the abusive leveling speeds -- and that's not a problem of the AE concept, that's a problem with the implementation of a reward system that's been allowed to get out of control on more than one occasion: does anyone remember the Winterlord?

Well said.

AE was a clencher for me and my friends. It is totally awesome to be able to stumble across an idea in the game for a follow-up to dev content and then go do it in AE.

AE is fantastic. If I can't decide what I feel like doing and no TFs are running I just grab a random arc off the forums and take it for a spin

It needs improvements to be sure, but thus far I think it's been a huge success.

So are Task Forces.

I'd imagine in time people will come up with farms are are both profitable and enjoyable (beyond just the rewards). Perhaps they already have. I would guess that the Devs main goal regarding farming is to make sure that whatever people farm they also at least somewhat enjoy (at which point, by Castle's definition it would no longer be farming), and yes AE is a great vehicle for that.

Shrugs, I'm already enjoying the current farm missions, even the generic 52-54 boss ones. To me, the people on the team, not the mission itself is what makes the game fun. For example, yesterday I started a 54 boss team with my Kin. We had 3 good brutes on the team and we were fighting 4-5 groups of mobs at once. Sure there were a few close calls but it was also exciting (and amusing). It was a laugh-fest from beginning to end and we finished the mission in about 10 minutes. That was quite enjoyable and fun to me.

That's great. I'm glad AE is multi-functional and you enjoy it.

See? We can all live together. No need to generalize or make fun/hate at each other.

This thread gets 5 stars because no one is flaming anyone and we can all agree to play AE the way we choose. Kudos.

Just in case I sounded otherwise... I think what you described right there is a *good* thing. Even if I myself don't have the same tastes.

While some of the travelling is aggrivating at best (see: missions in the faultline tunnels), the solution to boring travel is not to remove travel, but to make the trip more meaningful. Another game that has already been mentioned here had a lot of travel required. People complained about the places that were endless stretches of nothingness, but told stories about how intense another location was, even though it's the same size, because it was dangerous and involved attention and thought, rather than AFK autorunning.

Filling the zones themselves with content would be better than ignoring the zones, but when people are fixated upon experience (and other such rewards) as the content, then there isn't much that can be done.

Kinda like saying an easel and an expensive set of oils are great for fingerpainting, but whatever. It's about enjoying the experience, whatever that might mean. I love the storytellers.

You have an excellent point.

I think it would be great if the Devs were to do just that in future issues. I won't be surprised if they do. To be fair, I should point out that I think COX has done a lot right. The SK system for example. Super hero combat too. Fantastic.

And I think it's continuing to improve.

But in the meantime, the AE is a great solution for me.

Well done, my friend.

AE is a blessing, and if you don't like it, please don't complain about it, just leave.
