All servers are now up, I start the updater and then it immediately crashes!!! Anyone else experiencing this?? Help & suggestions appreciated!

I get a windows error message stating:

"failed to rename C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater\CohUpdater.exe to C:\ProgramFiles\City of Heroes\CohUpdater\CohUpdater.prv"

followed next with:

CohUpdater.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close . . . Please tell Microsoft about this problem, Send error Report?

I got an error and send report message window just as the updater finished applying the patch. Closed the program out, restarted and now it's working.

Please buff Ice Control.

I recommend excluding your game folder from realtime AV or temporarily disabling your AV till the update is done.

In the meantime, when this has happened to me 2 or 3 times before its pretty easy to open the game folder and manually rename the files, usually there are 3 cohupdater.* files, rename the .exe to .prv and the .tmp to .exe and restart the update.

2 new patches today looks like.

I just retried and no success on my end.

I had the same error, then discovered that my updater was not in the CoH folder with the rest of the game, and that it was named "CityofHeroes.exe" instead of "CohUpdater.exe".

Moving and renaming the updater to the latter, then launching it, fixed the problem for me.

I got the same error, and found that somehow my "CoHUpdater.exe" had gotten renamed at some point in the past to "OldUpdater.exe". Found that out by looking at the Properties in my shortcut. I renamed "OldUpdater.exe" to "CoHUpdater.exe" and now it's doing its thing just fine.

I don't randomly rename files, so I have no idea how that happened, but there it is. Thanks to the folks in this thread for pointing me in the direction it took to find the solution!

I did send my problem to NCSoft Support but they just spammed me back with useless information not applicable. So thanks again all!!

There may be a large number of people trying to download it right now. It just took me 5 minutes for the download to start.

Agreed. Since the server's been down for a while and everyone's eager to play, it may just be best to wait for a bit longer.

Well I went and deleted the cohupdate-ui-windll file like the error message told me. Tried again, it started downloading and reinstalled the very file I just deleted. Who knows why t worked. It just did

I did the same thing, and Mine works now too. Go figure.

Only difference is my folder didnt have a 3 files, it only had the .new and the .prv

Strange how we have to figure out solutions while Support just spams generic links that have no relation to the problem at hand.
Again complements to all in this thread! I'm in game and everything is working well, looks like my updater had "backup" attached to the name due to a copy done over 1 year ago.

i think it was just caused by lots and lots of people trying to download

this sort of thing happens alot with the coh updater

Lots and lots of people downloading at once wouldn't have caused multiple of us to have updater files named the wrong thing, when the game went to change the updater and couldn't find the right file.

Glad I found this thread, or I might have had no idea that the game was looking for something that wasn't there.

I just saw the issue, and noted that the error message was actually referring to my Documents & Settings folder, rather than the installation folder under Program Files. Seems like maybe it was looking at the location of the shortcut I was using, rather than the target, for some reason. Navigating to the game's installation folder and starting with the actual exe, rather than using a shortcut, allowed the updater to start correctly.

EDIT: Oops. this was just meant as a general sharing of info, not a specific reply to anything EarthWyrm said.

I can't log in either. I open the updater. It says it's downloading the manifest. Then it says it's fixing the pigg files. Then a little later (and it's taking a little longer each time I try it - 3 times so far), I get an error saying it couldn't delete the pigg files because another program is using them. Clicking "ok" on the error then closes the updater (and there are no other options on the error). I have no other programs running except the internet.

What up?? I did notice that my original shortcut was launching from my CoHTest folder somehow, but it was working just fine before now. Last time I played was this morning just before the servers went down for I15 going live. I tried launching the updater directly from the City of Heroes folder, but the same thing happened as described above.

edited to add:

I just noticed the updater lists the version as "18.20090422.5T", but the actual version is 19.20090619.2T. Is this the problem (or part of it)? If so, how can I fix it?

thanks...

ditto. I changed the name of the updater a while back so that Vista wouldn't give me the UAC prompt all the time, and completely forgot that I did it. Glad I checked the tech issues forum before support.
