Elect/EA = AWESOME!

So, I recently started a project with Energy Aura. My goal is to make great build while staying under 50 million. So, I've been doing a lot of bronze rolls and getting what I want. I'm almost 43 now with nearly capped defenses and I've only spent about 25 mil. Most of the build is done too. It makes me wonder why EA gets so much flack. Sure, there are some poor powers in the set, but the survivability is fine. It's a late bloomer, like SR. Just my thoughts.

It doesnt get bashed as much since it got buffed pretty recently.

Mind if I asked what all they buffed for EA? I was still under the impression that it hadn't been touched, lol

I recall they added a smallish heal to Energy Drain, and some toxic resist to one of the passives. And changes to IOs made it easier to boost it's defense.

The io's thing has made the difference for my build. The heal in energy drain... that's not too bad, but I don't rely on it. That's probably due to how I have it slotted for an io bonus. I run aid other though.

Got an Elec/EA as well.
Defense isn't capped AT ALL, still running entirely on SOs except for a Steadfast Res/Def, but fun times all around. The AoE potential, combined with my favorite type of damage mitigation, combined with the awesometastical animations, equals one happy Brute.
Darkest Night is really only going to add to that beauty.

Now I wish I could actually make a capped Def build.
That'd add to the beauty even more.

I guess different people will give you different answers, and there are definitely personal opinions about the power set.

Before going to technical things, there are couple things that some people don't like. For example, being stealthy doesn't look like a brute for some people. And there might be too many endurance management powers in the set, some people prefer powers more related to survival. Stealth and endurance powers are great, just that if a player doesn't make use of them, the set loses its luster.

There are many technical things. But I'll just mention a couple. There is no psionic defense which can be important for villains, but it doesn't seem like there are other outstanding abilities to make up for it. In my opinion, there are several attributes that are thematic to energy aura but they are not included in the set (you can take a glance at the first post's section B in the sticky thread to grab an idea).

Most of the previous discussions focused on the bare power set without power pools or IOs. As with all the other defense-based power set, tremendous gain in survival can be gained by accumulating IO defense bonus. That's why you find that EA is fine eventually. In fact, you can make it pretty tough if you spend some time on IO.

Awesome, sure. But is it STRONG and PRETTY?

Would you be willing to share your build. Sounds like you did some great things for little money. I'm still learning how to maximize return with sets. I'd really like to see what you've done and how you've done it. If you don't have the build in mids or don't want to take the time to put it in, i understand though.

Thanks,

I am doing elec/EA as a stalker rather than a brute and have softcapped that (I think brute may be slightly easier due to more unsuppressing stealth in the hide power). Basically my plan was kinetic combat x 4 in all the ST attacks except CI. Eradication x 4 in all the AoEs. 3x pulv fist + 3 pounding slug in CI and 3 Aegis in resist powers. Throw in CJ, tough, weave and a steadfast res/def and I have at present (with hide suppressed) S/L/E around 50, neg/fire/cold 45, holes being psi and toxic.

The powers that have Kin combats (I use the proc among my 4 for added mitigation) are then made up to the bonuses I want by frankenslotting the other two slots, the eradications where I don't use the proc, I just add a multistrike double or triple.

Note that you mustn't use procs in CI or it won't arc properly.

Elect/EA = AVERAGE!

Electric Melee = good with AoE, bad with single targets = average
EA = soft capped with typed damage = good, pre-IO = bad = average

Plenty of other sets that are better. SS/WP with just SOs will get you better performance. With IOs, I can think of many more powerful combinations, including some that are cheaper to IO out.

I'm glad you like the combination but let's not call a Ford a Ferrari.

Kinetic Combat can get pretty expensive, so I only worked one into my build.

My goal is to stay cheap and I've done it.

Fyi, I'm posting from my phone. Otherwise i'd post the build noe.

Two reasons why /EA doesn't do it for me. Stealth that doesn't suppress while in combat, but you pretty much need to take it for its +def to psy(it gives def to all), and no taunt aura.

Even SR for brutes has a taunt aura. /Dark has unsuppressed stealth, but it has a taunt/damage aura.

With both of those, as a brute, you're almost required to take taunt, or some AoE to maintain your fury in a team.

Basically, it isn't well designed for brutes.

I kept the cost down on the sets of 4 kinetic combats by using the proc, and only one (whichever I could get) of the DE and DER which are the expensive ones. If you're patient and spend a while over it in advance of needing the IOs, is not too bad.

I was softcapped to S/L/nrg by level 36 IIRC.

My build only has two sets of kinetic combat. And actually, kinetic combat is the most expensive set in my build. The rest are relatively cheap. It's known that soft-capping defense is pretty cheap. The expensive builds are enhancing other attributes on top of defense.

The build goes something like this. Now, the trick I have used in some cases is to go for low level IO's where needed. For example, Blessing of the Zephyr, Razzele Dazzle, some of Kinetic Combat. Plenty of these things can be rolled with 10-15, 20-25, and 30-35 bronze rolls. If anything, you'll end up with plenty of profit, if you wanted to go for 6 slotted build up w/ Gaussian's.

There are some weird slotting and they also made the build too tight. The build below is a modification of your build, it is slightly more expensive but gives some room for things like patron powers.
