So I know that making a blue and red SS/INV tanker and calling him "Supamon" or something like that is completely wrong and generic-able. Don't worry, I'm not doing something like that.

If I wanted to name the henchmen of my character after characters from a movie, kind of like a tribute, is that acceptable?

Example: Mercs/Traps MM, ex-military character, camo outfit and everything. The character has absolutely nothing to do with the movie that I would be naming the henchmen after. Soldier names: Blue Lou Marini, Matt Guitar Murphy, Mr. Fabulous. Spec Ops: Joliet Jake, Elwood. Still undecided on the commando.

Is this something you would petition? Would the GM's care about this?

You should be okay. However, it would really be up to the GM that gets the case to really decide that. Basically, go ahead and name them that, then, if you think that it might be petitionable, petition yourself, and explain what they are. This way, you have a GM response that you can go back to if one says that it's okay.

I don't think that's a problem, as long as it's obvious the Main character isn't a ripoff of anything.

1. You aren't copying their costumes, the pets costumes were made by the game itself.

2. You can't write a seperate bio for them.

I'm no voice of authority on the matter, but you should be fine unless you did something like name your character "Master Splinter" and your ninja henchmen after various turtles, Casey Jones, and the like. Although - be aware that sometimes the naming filter flips out and rejects some names for no apparent reason.

and sometimes they get trigger happy with the generic gun.

I know someone on liberty who got their name generic'd. The name in question is... NRG Nightmare

now why is that? when there are even NPCs now in the game named nightmare....

What does that have to do with naming pets?

At least, a bunch of mine are.

Slave Driver's zombies are named after the characters in Office Space.

Neko Mecha's robots are named after cartoon cats.

Rotten Johnny's thugs are named after punk rockers.

Bot Torrent's bots are named after old movie comedians (Three Stooges, Laurel & Hardy, and Groucho Marx).

My Thugs MM had the two Enforcers named Abbot and Costello. I then wrote a very extensive load_bind set up where the pets reenacted the entire "Who's On First" skit, emotes and all. I had it loaded so all I had to do was just set up my pets, then press one key repeatedly, and they would preform.

No, that has nothing to do with your question, really, but it was such fun. (There were some 300+ notepad binds to write and link)

My thugs are Larry, Curly and Moe; Abbott and Costello; and Charlie. I don't have the requisite amount of awesome to perform skits with them though.

I've been thinking about doing other sets as well.

Necro - Wat, Roland, Chaucer; Sir Ulrich and Sir William; Colville; and the ghost would be Sir Ector.

Your forum name reminded me of another possibility for mercs:

Soldiers: Book, Wash
Medic: Simon
Spec-Ops: Mal, Zoe
Commando/Public Relations: Jayne

If they are Trademarked names, then it's not allowed. If they're not Trademarked, you should be fine.

Oh my. I'm totally stealing that. That IS where I got the "Serenity" portion of my name.

You should be okay.

My soldiers are named for two movies I like and are really just military code names and since the character himself has nothing to do with either movie it's obviously not a TM violation.

Soldier names: Dead Meat, Washout and Doc J
Spec Ops names: Sneaky Weasel and 8 Ball
Commando name: Animal Mother

I thought the code name for the operation at the end of Hot Shots was SLeepy Weasel, not Sneaky Weasel.

I've seen it a number of times. It's actually from part Deux. I'm pretty sure it was Sneaky. Now I'm going to have to watch it again with the subtitles on to make sure. Either way though, Sneaky sounds better, especially for a Spec Op.

The best solution in any case is always just to petition yourself and see what the GMs think.

I've done this a few times while making characters based on obscure 90's scrolling beat'em up video game fighting bosses, they've all been deleted before but most of the time they're obscure enough to pass without notice.

They included:
Ash (renamed to Soot)

Shiva (can't remember what he was renamed to)

Barbon (again forgot what he was renamed to)

There's a lot of scope for homages and always petition yourself if every you feel in doubt of whether it will cause trouble.

I've actually just been reminded of the time my husband and I made characters named "Major Tom" and "Ground Control" and spent some time singing the song back and forth to each other in Atlas Park hehe
