Odd profanity word

Admittedly, my search fu is incredibly weak, so if this has come up before forgive me.

I was writing a description for a character and came across the error "Profanity detected in character description". Now, this confused the heck out of me, because nothing I wrote seemed at all offensive. Well, except maybe the use of booze. So I deleted that. Nope. Hmm. So, I went through each non obviously safe word (like it, and the) and eventually found the culprit.

Snatch

Yes. To grab something is offensive to people?? I'm wondering if this is an error, or is there some kind of obscure religious or ethnic slang that I have never heard of? Is there a list some where of banned CoH words?

And, to make this post semi constructive, it be nice if when an offensive word does pop up, instead of creating a generic error, the system told you what word was unnacceptable. At least that would solve the "what", if not the "why???" of my problem.

yes, it is profane

I find it funny that words like god which are by definition not profane are called profane by the checker

If you click on the error pop-up it'll take you to the word. It did that for me when I used "screw."

....ugh I hate the profanity filter....

Oh! Thats good to know! And yeah, the profane filter sucks. Up until this point I've had it turned off so never had to deal with it.

Its only profane by a small demographic and only when used as a noun, and even then there are a few other definitions of the noun as well.

That being said, the op probably wants to use this every day word as a verb.

I have encountered the other blocking mechanism copyright or whatever it was on another common dictionary word: gambit.

Yes I understand why they feel the need to block that word too but I disagree with it.

QR - 'naked' is also profane. 'It can clearly be seen with the naked eye' is obviously an obscenity to rival [censored] [censored] the [censored] [censored] [censored].

As is 'You're a cad, lord Recluse, and thats the naked truth!'

Eco.

Should see the filter in Phantasy Star Universe. You can't say crack, stave, or poof. You also can't say Damn which is ironic because one of the npcs in that game says it constantly.

Seriously, if you don't know why its on the profanity filter, your google image fu should let you know PDQ.

Not that odd, just underused 'cause there are a lot more common terms in American vulgar vernacular.

I am thinking, that there should be an OPTION for flagging a mission/arc as "profanity detected, author agreed to human review" for all these cases where the word filter goes nuts over something that is legal in context.. The mission is published, but there's the tacit understanding that if a CS rep finds the prose to be profane, the mission is immediately pulled. Also, it would be flagged for CS review upon publish (so the review doesn't take a long time to actually happen).

Basically a "Trust me, I know what I'm doing" setting.

marking the word 'naked' as profane or obscene is absolutely ridiculous. It's a word. i can understand why actual swear worfds are banned, and i agree with it. But banning words like 'naked' and 'gambit' is ludicrous. If something is obscene, then the complaint system should catch it. I can put a sentence such as 'bob rammed his giant member deep into his Auntie Edna's slippery hole' into the MA without difficulty. But 'the naked eye' is not allowed? What a crock.

Eco.

EDIT: Not that i'd actually say anything about Bob;s Auntie Edna lol

I'd like to get pedantic (well, technically speaking, I'm always pedantic... and admitting it is more pedantry) and point out that profane != obscene.

Profane is a reference to things that are unholy or offensive to that which is sacred. Profane language would include damn, hell, the names of demons and their ilk (presumably anything in the Goetia), and so forth.

Obscene is for language of a crude or lewd nature, as the OED puts it, "offending to moral nature." Examples would be the f word, the various synonyms for excrement, and so forth.

I think everything mentioned in this thread would be seen as obscenities, not profanity.

I couldn't put the line 'nip it in the bud' in one of my descriptions. It seems the filters are a bit nitpicky. Another forum that I frequent won't let the name of a famous author through the filter, either. Don't even think about discussing Alfred Hitchcock over there.

yes, but as I pointed out in my post - the game calls it profane. I actually had it report to me that the use of the word god was profane

Actually, depending on your religion, the use of the 'G' word is profane if it is done in improper context.

It's all about context for some words. Even the Bible says "..and the [short term word for male rooster] crowed three times". Pretty sure you could say "He snatched that pussycat and stuffed it in a box." in a Disney movie, but you sure would get some giggles.

You also cannot use the word 'spook' in MA, even if it describes a ghost.

I agree, the game's obscenity filter was written by illiterate pawns. I'd like to defenestrate the person responsible. And I'm sure he wouldn't want anything to happen to his fenestrates.

Spook makes a small amount of sense, its not commonly used today but it was used as a derogatory title for African Americans.

I imagine that's why it's in there.

I think they are erroring on the side of caution, and probably too over cautious i agree.

However, derogatory names can offend some players. Spook isnt one that upsets me personally, but i imagine it may others.

I know at work we use spook to talk about the intelligence guys
