Good Archetypes for Trio?

Hey, my 2 brothers and I recently bought CoH to play together, and we have no idea which archetypes to pick. We are planning on playing exclusively with each other. What would be some good archetype combinations? Please include primary/secondary powers. Thank you!

Anything, using anything/anything powers.

Really.

There's no "holy trinity" here - no tank/DPS/Healer. So you have an even better way to get started - Just answer a few questions!

1. Which side (hero or villain,) and
2. What do you usually like playing as?

Do you like being a meatshield, holding off the hordes while everyone else shoots around you? Do you like hanging back and doing lots of damage, or getting up close and mixing it up? Do you like seeing your enemies drop before you, weak and unable to do anything, confused - or, conversely, buffing up your allies to the point they're miniature engines of destruction? Do you like shaping the course of the battle, stopping enemies in their tracks or even turning them on each other?

Regardless, at least one of you should be a controller. Because controllers rock. Especially Earth controllers.

thanks. I guess we'll all just pick earth controllers since it doesn't matter.
Just kidding.

Blueside:

Earth/ troller with Thermal or Sonic secondary.
Fire/Stone tanker.
Fire/Electric blaster.

Solid offensively and defensively and if ya go with Earth/Thermal, you have a kinda fire theme going for ya.

That said, anything will work. The game isn't that hard.

Redside:

I have less experience villainside, but I might go with the following.

Elec/Inv Brute.
Fire/Thermal Corruptor.
Dark/WP Stalker.

Lotsa offense, not so much on defense.

A team of three will do well no matter what the power or AT combinations. Tactics go a good long way in the game, as does knowing what the other guys on the team are expecting.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

Well really its whatever you want to play and welcome by the way to city of heroes i would say having a empathy is always good for healing and buffing so maybe a empathy/anything for defender and a scrapper or a blaster for damage and maybe a tank for tankin or a controller for controlling mobs and secondarys add nice buffs and heals too have fun and make a couple builds to try together until you find one u like

Healing is the weakest form of damage mitigation in the game, I wouldn't make it a priority.

If you have one guy with buffs and another with debuffs, you may go far.

You say that as if it would be a bad idea, but it would probably kill. You have 3 people who can hit short recharge stuns, plus great holds, knockdown powers, and really massive -DEF debuffs. If all the mezzes aren't enough, you'll have 3 hard to kill pets who taunt. And that's just out of your primary.

As most folks have said, CoH is more forgiving than most games. You don't need Tank/Heal/DPS like many MMOs.

That said, it's still an MMO. Some combinations are force multipliers - you can have three characters that greatly renforce each other. Others aren't.

But there's also a divide between what's optimum and what's fun for you. Playing three scrappers isn't the best combo, for example. But an all scrapper team can be pretty awesome with three people just flipping out and killing things, no cares in the world. Three blasters - well, blasters can be very fragile. But the carnage will be insane.

Personally, I'd suggest that whatever you do, at least one of you should look at playing a defender or controller of some kind - support isn't required in this game, but most folks still agree it's nice to have.

Some of the most efficient superteams are all-defender or all-controller. With enough stacked buffs and debuffs, you don't need tanking or damage ATs.

But really, anything can work.

A good three some would be toons that can have the following traits:

Player 1: Damage taker, either a tank or a brute.
Player 2: Damage dealer, either a scrapper or a blaster or stalker or Dominator.
Player 3: Support, either Defender or Controller or Corruptor or Master Mind.

I prefer I prefer defenders but if you need a healer, Controllers can take empathy as their secondary power. After the tank/brute gets high enough lvl you really won't have to worry about it that much. Besides, I know you said the 3 of you plan to play excusive, but if you need a healer for an AV/Hero fight, you can try to look one up to join u.

As for the power types, just play around with a few toons up to lvl 10 to get a feel. Each of you are gonna have a preference to what type of toon you like and what powers you choose. My 2 sons and I play and we all have different likes and dislikes. Each of you should get a feel of what it is you like and then make a trio to run to lvl 50.

Good luck

No need for anything special. However, i like the idea of a tank, scrapper, controller.

I run with 3 others and we have no tank, no healer and we are in our late 20's and no deaths. It really all depends on knowledge of the game and powers.

Scrapper, blaster, defender.

Scrapper Fire/Fire
Blaster Ice/Ice
Defender Dark/Dark

Unstoppable trio.

Almost anything will work including 3 empaths (healers in other MMO terms but much more than that here), double fortitude and mez protection from early on and perma recovery/regen auras plus adrenalin boost later.

I'd be inclined to go with

fire/shield scrapper
cold/rad, cold/dark or cold/sonic defender
plant/kin troller

none of these are really fotm builds, but all are fun to play in a small team, and this should kick butt from very early levels. The cold shields will top up the scrapper's defences and his aggro aura should keep stuff off the squishies, but plant's AoE confuse and later creepers should do a lot of that anyway.

I would expect with the available debuffs that you could handle AVs easily later without ay expensive IOs.

Pretty much anything will work, like everyone else said. If you want a nicely balanced team, I'd go with probably a controller, a blaster, and a scrapper. Maybe something like:

Earth/Kin controller
Sonic/Mental blaster
Fire/WP scrapper

Try something unusual...if you are running hero-side, try three defenders! It will surprise you. I'd suggest:

Rad/Dark
Kin/Electric
Cold/Ice

This will give great debuffs with the Rad and Cold, as well as great buffs with Speed Boost, Increase Density Cold Shields, and AM, as well as a minor heal from Rad. The /Ice will also add the option of some control with Freeze Ray and Bitter Freez Ray.

I started an 8 person all defender team with my SG mates, but 6 dropped out and left my Rad/Dark and my Brother's Kin/Elec. We proceeded to duo, on invincible, from the late 20s all the way to 50. INCLUDING all of the praetorian AVs. (We did need to use some shivans on a couple of them)

It's amazing what you can do with buffs/debuffs.
