New Blood

Hmm...

Ran across a rather interesting phenomenon last weekend; my fiancee finally (after expressing interest for some time) got around to starting in on City of Heroes, and I created a new 'toon to join her.

While in Outbreak, I noticed that it was rather busier than it had been last time I was through (which, admittedly, was a good while ago)... and, out of the... ehh, maybe seven or eight characters that went scooting by, only one had more than the three month badge, and most not even that.

Then, wandering around AP, I was curious, and started poking at folks' badge screen, uncovering another half-a-dozen newbies. And this, mind you, was on Guardian, which is hardly the most populous server.

So... was that just an isolated instance, or have the rest of the forumgoers noticed an influx of newbies lately as well?

There most certainly has been an influx. The publicty around the MA, and the ability to create user content, has been a draw for some.

My mains SG just picked up someone 6 days into the game, a RL friend of a member who was finally convinced to play beacsue of the possibilities of the MA for telling his custom stories.

As to the actual topic...

I've not noticed much honestly; but to be fair, I play AE almost entirely these days, and I solo, so I'm kind of away from most folks most of the time.

Plus if anyone was waiting to get into a Supers MMO and were going to go with CO in April of this year, they were told it was really going to be July.. and just recently it's really going to be this September.

Plus, marketing is starting to finally do their job: product placement on TV; web advertising; simplified and easy Trials; Game Card and Architect box on real store shelves and available at Amazon; easy upgrade from trial to full game; fansite blitz (actually flying in MMO and game fansite writers to San Fran for a preview to Architect); etc...

I just teamed with some random dude on a trial account in MA, so take that very small, anecdotal data point for what it's worth.

On a related note, I was rather puzzled that trial accounts can't run MA missions by themselves. I would think you'd definitely want to give trial accounts access to it. Maybe they just don't have the code in to prevent them from rating and commenting?

Oh one other anecdote from me.

We are in the midst of our 5th anniversary events, and as part of the 'Dead Fusioneers' event we had a couple of trials 'win' events.

The inf prize was 5 million, which they obviously couldn't accept, but we gave em as much as they c an take.

I've been on low-level PuGs with a few new players this week. They all seemed like good people - asking questions about things they didn't understand, looking for critiques on their playstyle, etc. I have also teamed with a couple of returning Vet players since I14 came out.

Interestingly, most of this has been outside of AE.

Anecdotally, there has also seemed to be an uptick of "Hi, I'm new, please help me" posts on these forums as well.

Yeah, since I usually play a good bit of the lowbie game (just now getting multiple alts to the low 30s, only have 1 lvl 50 & 3 in the low 40s) - there does seem to be a lot of new players around.

I have been giving random bits of salvage & recipes out as "welcome wagon" gifts - and then usually giving an impromptu lesson on what to do with it.

A nice thing you can do for a new player: help them get their wings. Many of them seem to come into the game with a winged character in mind, don't know what to do with a recipe, and don't have the resources to buy the materials in the first place. Helping them make exactly the character they envisioned is a nice welcome.

On Protector there have been plenty of new, unbadged, younguns. I love dumping some influence on them, and using a costume change emote in front of them just in case they hadn't gotten the magic booster yet lol.

I spent quite a bit of time PuGging on lowbie (5-20) characters at the weekend and encountered several apparent newbies, asking a lot of questions about, well, just about everything.

I've also had three separate people approach me when I was idling at the markets, asking for advice/info on IOs, set bonuses, etc. Each said that they'd played during the first year and have now returned to find so much new stuff to learn.

They all (new and returning) seemed pretty positive about their experiences so far. Which is nice.
