Should empaths really use their attacks?
So they should continue to let those enemies riddle them/their comrades, who they can *also* feel pain from full of bullets and do nothing? *scratches head*
While I can see your point, it doesn't necessarily follow that the empath is going to feel the pain of the enemies he/she is battling. First off, there's robots, zombies and (arguably) mutants and 'aliens' from other dimensions - all of whom either lack emotions or might be too alien for a receptive to pick up.
As for regular humans, it's conceivable that an empath could take action to defend his/her comrades despite the pain felt at causing harm to others. That's rather heroic when you think about it.

My empaths feel the pain of their allies; and do whatever it takes to stop that pain! They buff, debuff, heal, and most definitely attack those who are hurting their friends
When an ally is afraid - she takes that fear away!
When an ally is disoriented - she clears their minds!
When an ally feels weak - she gives them a lil adrenaline boost!
And when an ally is getting their butt whipped she does whatever she has to in order to save them!

If you ask me, they messed up on defenders and corruptors. Corruptors should be the villainous ones who can feel their enemy's pain, and still attack - Where as the heroic defenders should have domination over pain, allowing them to feel and remove it, from allies AND enemies.
You empaths are evil.

Someone woke up on the Emo side of the bed today.
Interesting Fact:
Is it better to defeat an opponent gently (knowing you won't inflict any grievous, permanent injury at the expense of inflicting injury), then to allow that crazy, spined fellow with foot long quills shooting out of his body and covered in either flames or the dark chill of the Netherworld do it for you?
What about that guy throwing fireballs the size of basketballs and flame bolts you're sure could start a forest fire (and for all you know have) with reckless abandon? That big, giant, ambling rock dude that you just saw pull up and throw a boulder bigger then your Great Aunt Agnes? And you're sure that other guy is fine, but you really question his tenuous control over that giant, jagged ice-creature he just summoned with the sword like something straight out of a horror movie.
You're at least guaranteed that while it may hurt, you could be saving them from something more terrible. Not all heroes have such a tight grip on their morals and ethics, or Punisher wouldn't have been popular enough to warrant multiple movies.
RP a mashocist empathy defender and the problem is solved.

This is why there is no Empathy Blast set I wonder what one might look like?
You offer the Bone Daddy milk and cookies doing 45 points of "Maybe I should just sit down and think about what I have done" damage.
- Jock Tamson, Who thinks it might offer some of the best animations.

I want Empathy blast. D:
Simply feeling your pain doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.
A good empath defender knows that yes its main job is to keep people alive and going strong with buffs and heals and such it also knows that a dead enemy deals no damage.

to be fair. Most roleplayers will invent their own reasoning for how empathy works rather than stay with the standard set definition.

So while it makes sense that an empath can "feel" the suffering of their allies, and use that to help them out...doesn't it also mean they can feel the pain of their enemies?!

To a degree. Another question would be to ask should they *try* to do so. Simply because you can understand or even sympathize with a persons motivations doesn't mean you condone their actions.
"Jeeze he had a bad childhood so I should not take action to stop him from stealing that purse." or "I know he means well(In a sick twisted way.) so I won't stop Dr. Vazhilok from putting that immuno suppresent into the cities water supply."
Edit : Actually given the upcoming redemption/fallen expansion this would make a great template for fallen empaths. Empathizing too much with villans?

Equating the Empathy powerset with feeling other people's emotions and being "nice" pisses me off.
Not because I'm pedantic, but because it meant this awesome powerset was not propagated to Villains because of its name.
While I'm here, taking Rage from Superstrength doesnt mean you're angry, either :P
I mean let's look at the definition of "empathy":

the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings...of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner

So while it makes sense that an empath can "feel" the suffering of their allies, and use that to help them out...doesn't it also mean they can feel the pain of their enemies?! It's pretty twisted to feel someone's hurt as you blast them into a wall or fill them with arrows...and then CONTINUE to do it.
