Now as for the topic itself, yeah I was shocked to find that out too, even more so that there are two groups of them.

The cool thing about the Rikti's real nature...it's strongly hinted at in many many places throughout the game.
I'm not certain about redside, but on blueside at least, the RWZ isn't the first arc in the game to explicitly spell things out like that - there's older high-level blueside storyarcs that reveal this too. Indeed the old blueside Rikti arcs is where the 'Omega Clearance' tag comes from.

Yup! The blueside arc in question is "The Organ Grinders," which is a 35-40 arc. Basically, you find out the same exact thing that is mentioned in the OP but it is still pretty easy to miss so it's good that they put the reveal in the RWZ as well.
The redside "reveal" is in two arcs: Timothy Raymond's "Strange Memories" arc in the 30-35 range (Although it's handled slightly awkwardly) and Ambassador Kuhr'Rekt's arc "Kuhr'Rekt Revenge" in the 40-45 range. The latter one not only reveals the Rikti's true nature but also confirms which one of the theories regarding how they got to their current state (As listed in the RWZ clue) is true. I'd definitely recommend checking it out. Just keep in mind that the contact gives you this information in clue form after you accept his missions.

Im pretty sure i remember part of one of the blueside arcs, possibly organ grinders, about how they were inspecting rikti cdavers and how all the organs were used up and in an awful state. So we have killed some.
