Market Merge Inevitable
For those that haven't seen the email:
Paragon Studios is proud to officially announce the next City of Heroes® expansion, City of Heroes Going Rogue! This will be the first major expansion for the City of Heroes franchise since the launch of City of Villains® in 2005.
Praetoria, a utopian mirror to our own world, hides a dark secret. Exploring this mysterious alternate earth, the heroes and villains of this world feel an uneasiness of doubt creep over them. Loyalties are questioned. Choices are made. Lines are drawn. As they search for the truth behind Emperor Cole and his Praetorian guard, brutal foes and fierce allies emerge, turning this once blissful paradise into a battle ground.
City of Heroes Going Rogue officially opens the "mirror universe" of Praetoria and an all-new alignment system that explores the shades of gray that lie between Heroes and Villains. For the first time, Hero characters can become Villains and vice versa, enabling Heroes to cross over to the Rogue Isles and Villains to experience Paragon City.
For more information, read the official press release and check out our new Going Rogue website to view the announcement trailer and register for the latest news and updates for City of Heroes Going Rogue.
While I think this sounds pretty cool, one thing I don't think it sounds like is "Market Merge Inevitable".
It is a possiblity, but it doesn't seem like they have to merge the markets for the rest of the system to be implemented. We'll see what happens, I guess.
[speculation]
Praetorian Market!
Using new Praetorian Influence, players can acquire and trade new items by using the trade interface or the new Praetorian Market.
Exchange centers will convert your influence or infamy into Praetorian Influence, at a cost.
[/speculation]
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!
168760: A Death in the Gish. 3 missions, 1-14. Easy to solo.
Infinity Villains
Champion, Pinnacle, Virtue Heroes
judging by the proliferation of currencies, I think Neuro may be on to something
Or it may be something like the WoW market in Gadgetstan.
Interesting announcement, anyway...

I took this to mean that your toon can go from the "real" Rogue Isles to the "real" Paragon City and back.
I suppose they could mean that you will play the opposite faction in the mirror version, which would mean no need for a market merge.
Yes, some friends were theorizing that version of it. It makes sense from several angles.
1) No seeing known "villain" characters on the streets of Steel Canyon, etc.
2) Potentially reduced need to balance ATs for permenant co-mingling - the "other world" could have slightly different rules. (Yes, you can mingle now, but there are people who, for example, would never touch a Tanker again if they could roll a Brute in CoH.)
3) Done a certain way, no market mingling worries, though this would take some impressive roleplaying justification if Praetorea didn't have it's own distinct markets, which would suck.
However, I question whether CoH has the population to manage this. This approach, as I envision it, would effectively partition the game into those playing the expansion and those not. This strikes me as likely to offer a ridiculously small population of expansion players while damaging the already small primary game population.
Because of this, I very, very much hope this is not the approach they take.
Now if they aren't taking this approach, I do wonder how they'd keep the markets "pure". They'd have to strip you of inventory whenever you switched sides, which seems rather draconian.

If its a paid for expansion its going to segregate the community no matter what.
Personally I think they should have done a stealth-merge (unannounced to anyone) about two weeks ago when the Markets were at their most volatile. Things were so messed up then that nobody would have noticed and by the time the Devs announced it the post-MA dust would have settled and all would be right with the world.
The Rogue expansion, paid or not, will have to be done well or it may subdivide the game population. Redside suffers from relatively low pop now. Blueside can survive if some of their population goes to a new zone for a while but I do not believe that redside can afford to lose anyone.

I'll be taking heroes to redside. I like red's zones better.

Wait, they're not the Rouge Isles?
I'm guessing the Praetorian Universe will only be accessible for people who have paid for the expansion.
As for cross-over, I would expect that it would allow you to change the alignment of your toon From Villain->Rogue->Hero. Perhaps there will be a "Realignment" mission and tokens like respec. I am pretty sure the devs aren't mad enough to turn all zones into PvP zones, so for your villain to move blueside it will need to turn to Rogue or Hero. Again, this would only be available for people who have paid.
If this is correct, then I suspect a market merge will be inevitable. If they don't merge, they would at least be introducing a mechanism for transporting items and inf from Redside to Blueside. Maybe there could be a niche there *shrug*
(IMO the game is five years old and the devs are quite right to milk the playerbase for money every so often, to keep the game viable. Being able to play Hero Dominators/Brutes etc is something that a lot of existing players would cough up money for)

Probably the opposite. I imagine it will allow you to log on to your favourite toon and join your friends no matter what faction they are playing. If you've paid for the expansion :-)

I don't understand how your comment relates to the one you quoted. What did you mean when you said the word "opposite"? So the original statement can be translated from...
"The Rogue expansion, paid or not, will have to be done well or it may subdivide the game population."
into...
"If done poorly it may subdivide the game population."
The opposite would be "If NOT done poorly it may subdivide the game population." or "If done well it may subdivide the game population".
I think your response says "If it is done well it won't subdivide the game population." That is the same thing as what you quoted. Perhaps you meant to say "I agree"? Or am I missing something?

In keeping with the paid expansion... Villain->Rogue, $10 please, Rogue->Hero... well you get the idea.

Thats how I was interpeting the announcement as well... sorta like I can play the mirror of my Corr on the other side. Was not thinking that I can use all the infamy he has stored up at WW only that he can play the hero side stories
I meant, even if it is done poorly, if what they are doing is allowing characters to switch sides, then it won't divide the playerbase.

hehe yeah I'm guessing tokens. Maybe you start with one at toon creation, but can buy additional for $10.
Like I said before, anything that keeps the game profitable is okay with me.

Well if all they are doing is allowing side switching through say a moderate sized coop zone how will that require a market merge ?
If anything its an exceptional perk for people to buy the expansion. They can play smugglers between redside and blueside and make bundles of inf exploiting market imbalances.

I agree, they could let it work that way. I think it would be a PR disaster. Not that I agree with this at all, but can you imagine the uproar about people who pay for the expansion having that advantage over the "casual players" who don't/can't?
Even in this forum we have folks who argue against a market merger on the basis of how "unfair" the initial shock to the value of inf on the two sides would be. I have a hard time imagining the devs wouldn't cave in the face of the stink I am imaginining.

Posi or Castle maybe just recently stated [in an interview? ...in the local channel during the 5th anniversary celebration?] that they were not certain on how to best merge the markets (something about "we have to be sure we design it right, b/c it can't be undone once implemented").
If the Rogue expansion (which probably has been in development for 9-15 months) includes a merger then I think the Posi/Castle would have used different verbiage just a few weeks ago.
I would love to see a merger, but I don't plan to "turn blue" waiting.

I don't see them having problems with letting people buy or gain indirectly through patronage significant in game advantages.
As to a forum blow up, some people will be upset on principle but most forumites are going to be buying the pack and looking forward to getting one up.
With the new expansion, "Going Rouge", I believe a market merger is inevitable now.
