Why would you stay for 7 hours in the mish or with team?

huh, I made myself a two-box arc for my MM's, only made it to 17 so far. I must not be doing it right 
I don't care if people do it, but it's always puzzled me. I don't find it the least bit fun. But then, I'm not an "Achiever" type. I like my characters to "live and grow" and get attached to them. I don't want an avatar of a bunch of numbers. Very dull to me.

Sometimes you just want the "Gimme Stamina!" button. Put that button in game and it would eliminate alot of casual PLing at least.

Eh. I can deal with the struggle. It's not THAT hard without stamina, you just have to play differently, like with any fairly decent (missing) power. I've never been in a big hurry. In fact, I solo a lot because everyone is always RUSH RUSH RUSH in missions.

Look I'm not here to whine, the game is what it is and I've never faulted people for doing what they want to do while I do what enjoys me. So keep that in mind before allowing me to dip into am into a minor rant here.
I'm new to the game.. got here late but have been enjoying myself quite a bit. I'm 42 now, played it 'fair' the whole way less for ethical reasons and more so I could expierence the game as intended, those arcs aren't so stale for me afterall. But I must admit there was some part of me that wanted to look at that character and think 'all right I fought my way to 50'. Sure I can watch other folks and friends zoom zoom as fast as possible to avoid having to 'play', and i can understand that on the umpteenth alt, but hey at least I earned my levels and up until now that was really enough for me. I was perfectly content and never had any trouble finding a team who felt the same. I knew I was being rather inefficient, but I was gaining friends and having fun and it was working just fine for me.
For me this just takes the cake. Up until now I knew that I was sacrificing speed for enjoyment/diversity/playing the game and I was perfectly content with that and it never bothered me people choose other routes. Looking at this however I just feel outright stupid. Is it not flat dumb to spend a month or two saving the world to earn levels when you can squirt out a 50 in a matter of hours? What was even the point of punching so many darn baddies, and how am I going to even encourage myself to level the rest of the way to 50 when it is so utterly meaningless at this point?
Again I know this is coming off as yet another whine/rant, and for that apologize it is not my intent. I just wanted to offer a perspective from someone who isn't running around with a pack of 50s and trying to work my way up the game for the first time. AE farm missions may have been disappointing but was totally expected and half the people using them would be off farming anyway. Shame to see the low-mid levels able to auto sk to pull off the same trick but I learned to live with that and despite the complaints I've seen on the forums I've surely never had trouble finding non AE teams on Victory. But this instant 50 stuff? This really kills my motivation to press on. Am I going to feel stupid if I log in and actually work towards leveling to 50 when I could just take a nap while someone exploits the ae to its fullest extent? Maybe mmos aren't the best use of time in this world but the more I see this the more I've felt like I've been wasting my time working for something that apparently no longer requires work at all.
Again just my two cents from one of the few newer players. I really have nothing against farmers, afterall it's that or bum in Atlas, but this super quick PLing is just sad to me. I've read a lot of doom and gloom about how this or that will nerf/hurt/kill CoX and mostly I think its much ado about nothing but this particular situation has a good chance of eliminating any chance of new blood. Not because I can't find teams here and there, surely I will find a spattering of folks who felt like playing for ten minutes or couldn't find a free ride that day, but because will we not all eventually come to the conclusion that we all know someone who hit 50 in an afternoon and we're possibly wasting our time?
Thanks Lindow for proving how bad this can be and sharing it, I can only hope the devs care and are working towards a solution to make 'shall I do a mission or an ae arc' a real choice and not 'shall I play the game or hit the 50 button'. Again I'm new so I don't really know how the devs generally deal with stuff like this. For now I cross my fingers and hope, but if this doesn't at least see a major toning down of some sort it's going to be awful hard for me to rationalize pushing to 50. Why bother I would feel kinda stupid...

I'll say this: the only way you're wasting your time is if you're not having fun playing the game. This isn't WoW, or LOTRO, where getting to max level is just the start, and you have to loot up for end game raids. We have very little of that here in City.
Do what's fun for you, and try to ignore people who are zipping to 50 in an afternoon. My guess is that, after taking a character to lvl 42 the legit way, you would be pretty disappointed to skip right to 50 without actually doing the content.

Hey Seren, I'm with you. I have played since Dec. 05 and have 10 level 50's. and yes I have been PL'd a bit, but never more than a level or two at a shot. I enjoy playing the game. learning the Story behind it. Maybe I'm on the wrong server for that but meh, I <3 Victory.

I'm just not a pokey player. If I wanted to wait and take 30 10 minutes to get to the place my "quest" was I'd play WoW.

It all depends on how you want to play Seren. I recommend that everyone play thier first few chars legit all the way. There is a enough content to do so. But when you're up to number 10-20 sometimes that pre-stamina, or pre-travel power time makes you want to scream.
I personally don't see what anyone gets in going 1-50 through PLing. There's no real end game to this game, the fun is in the journey there. The only thing to do at 50 is trick out your character. Or PvP, for the 10 or so people that do that. :P

I can't speak for anyone else, but the toons I PL are ones for PVP. I have tons that never get PL'd and just PVE. Oh, I did PL kins on both blue and red side to farm with.

And thank you Mental_Giant I hopped a bit from server to server when I first got here but settled on Victory and have loved the place ever since! I've read a lot of problems AE has had with teams for folks on other servers and I'm happy to report we actually DO still have regular ole teams here, I haven't had much trouble with it and have met plenty of other like minded folk along the way.
You are absolutely right that the point is having fun, and also that I probably wouldn't find an instant 50 very gratifying. It's just it almost seems to lessen the allure of actually getting there, maybe I'm a bit late in the game for much of that to be left anyway heh. Probably overreacting a touch with that 
It's just, sure PL has always happened and I really can understand why folks would do that reasons and have been mentioned in this thread, but this just seems like too much to me.
It's the lack of a grindfest endgame that really attracts me to CoX and yea, I can really relate to the folks who can't understand why anybody would want to skip ALL of the midgame when that's where the meat is O.o

Hiya Scootertwo Glad to hear there are people who can appreciate some story in beween the slaughter! Like Toril says I can easily see how certain levels can be frustrating. I have a few low level alts myself, one even got a quick ride to fly so hey yea I can dig that much heh. I'm starting to get bored on a few in game arcs myself, at least the early ones, so I can relate to that as well.. AE can be used for good as well as evil after all

...and partly because CoH has never been a game about getting to 50. Because what do you do then? You can play that, PvP, etc, but this isn't like WoW, where half the idea is getting to that top level so you can do "the cool stuff". Well, "the cool stuff" in CoH is mostly on the way up. 50 is somewhat the end for a lot of people.
CoH has always been about the journey, not the destination.

Which is cool enough. That's why I solo, because I know the others would rather not go slowly. Different folks, different styles. I don't mind the thrill of running through and clobbering the crap out of stuff sometimes, I just have to be in the right mood for it, is all. Plus I play a lot at work (hotel night auditor) and I'm interrupted a lot. Not really cool to do to teams.

Right, and I get that. It's just that, to me, my characters are characters. History, personality, etc. All of them. I just can't PL. It's dull, I feel like I "cheated" and I get no satisfaction from a character like that. I'm far more a comic book geek than I am a gamer. I PvP sometimes, but I'm not really that into it. It's more something to do with my higher levels (I enter them in our SGs tourneys, routinely get my butt kicked, but still have fun! ). I understand the point of view. "I've done the content a million times and I just want a better PvP toon" is perhaps the most logical reason I can think of for PLing. PLing anything else seems...odd and missing the point to me.

I'm with Decorum on this one. All of my characters have a back story. You don't have to play the exact same content over and over.
If you are bored, try this...Pick a different origin. Talk to different contacts. Concentrate on different enemies. Try new and underused power sets. If you aren't having fun with the toon you're playing, delete and try something else.

The old excuse "I'm so bored of grinding through the same old content" just doesn't wash anymore. MA just opened up more content then you could possibly hope to experience on your journey to 50. So what's the excuse now? I guess if you want to PL a PvP toon or two...but wow, our PvP population must be set for a HUGE explosion of people...
Oh, and don't look for any "Short" content atm. I think the devs are going to have to change the search description for Short to "Farm". I only had time for one last mission yesterday so I did a search for a short mission arc - picked a random page in the middle of the list (looking for something that might not have been rated a lot) and found a FULL page of farms (or cleverly disguised farms). Moving forward and backwards a page didn't help either. Just kind of sad. Great. Congrats. You've got a new 50 in 10 hours. Now what?

Just because YOU feel like you wouldnt enjoy getting a 50 in hours, or it would make you feel like you cheated, does NOT mean that everyone else feels that way. Hell, some of them may be doing it just because it DOES feel like cheating!

So now that you tested it, and found it to be true, you deleted that toon!? Whats the difference between the pl farms and this, other then you have cut out the bridge? I see the farms, and people looking for bridges and padders in P.I. To me the only thing thats different is its easier because of AP, and no bridge is needed! Once the auto sk is fixed it will be farming in AP and you will have the bridges hanging out there instead of PI. I would rather have a team of 8 myself, and yes if i have the sk room to fill team, I will fill team. But to me that means everyone can play. At times I havnt had a team, and it gets tough sometimes running solo, so if I see a toon, I dont care what lvl, if I'm doing mishs I will invite them to my team and sk them. This way all get to play. I get the random tell asking if there is room, and again I will invite if there is room! Now does this make me a PL'er, some may say yes, but I say no.... Again I would rather a full team of 8!

Getting a character one to fifty very quickly is not usually my cup of tea, but I can totally understand it. Also another thing I have seen a lot of people do.. is get a character to a high level, and slot them up with purples and good set bonuses. Then play the content through ouroboros. It's just more comfortable for them to have the enhancements in place. I know some people that won't even do the freedom phalanx tfs while "in level" for them. They want more slots in their powers! Just offering other possibilities. Basically my view is... it's your $15, play it how you want it
