I just took my dictionary and...
I think the biggest issue may very well be the fact that the Ultimate universe is the worse thing to happen to comic books since Frank Miller, and the developers are only trying to protect us from the insanely bad taste of someone that would enjoy them enough to rip them off.
I salute you, developers! Now can we ban "Dark Horse" and "Grant Morrison" Please? Pretty please?
someone had the word "the" come up as banned. and i think there were many more like this. this is stupid.
I tried to use "Thing" as an object name, and it was locked out for similar reasons. I can't understand it:
"This orange, rocky thing gained its incredible strength and invulnerability through exposure to cosmic radiation during a space flight with its good friend Reed Richards, Reed's girlfriend Sue Storm, and Sue's cocky and annoying brother Johnny."
What?
Arc 55669 - Tales of the PPD: One Hell of a Deal (video trailer)
Arc 64511 - The Wrecking Ball
Arc 1745 - The Trouble With Trimbles
Arc 302901 - HappyCorpse
I'm waiting for the word damage to get banned since Marvel did a limited series back in the '80s called 'Damage Inc.'

Never read any Ultimate universe. But, Dark Knight returns and Sin City put Frank Miller in at least the same Sentence as John Byrne.
What funny about this all is that I'd love to see Marvel try to take NCSoft to court on the usage of the words "Ultimate" or "Gambit". The judge would laugh and dismiss the case.
I should probably go dig up that thing on common usage doctrine and hit somebody with it. They aren't allowed to lay claim to words.

[/ QUOTE ]To be fair to Marvel, they haven't trademarked common words; they've trademarked the characters which happen to have a common words as their super hero/villain names. Paragon Studios is just being overly cautious with their word filter.
True, if Marvel brought Paragon Studios to court over someone using the word "Gambit", they'd be laughed out of court... but they would have a case if someone were using the character Gambit/Remy Etienne LeBeau. Blocking the word Gambit is one way to help prevent people creating Remy.
Edit: Not to say that I think the word filter is fine as-is. I agree that it's a bit too restrictive, but it's at least understandable.

Glad they flagged the word "cracker" Wouldn't want anyone saturating an arc with that offensive word!!

You just know if they hadn't, people would be complaining and demanding the freedom to use the African-American racially inclined word.

Is cracker a racially inclined word? I wasn't aware if it was. I was just surprised I couldn't use it. I've always understood the enlgish slang term meaning a person of great skill or someone who's good at doing a particular thing.

Yes. It's a little more regionally specific than "redneck" but carries the same connotation. It's primarily used to refer to residents of Florida, Georgia and Alabama (and peripherally, other southern states) in a derogatory manner.
Dec out.

ROFL i found this myself.. i made a hellion named "Fire Cracker" I ended up going with Firecracker.. and yea some of this filter crap is total BS. that happens when someone decided to copy write "Is" Or "the"
to me all this copy writing of words is a complete shame. Maybe one day we will have a revolution over this crap. I cant say star wars... Or Surf, or god knows how many other words that are completly common.. Heck even proper names shouldnt be. Its one thing to name a company after it, but to make it soo any use of the words is an infringment is a complete failer of the system.
Hmmm maybe i should make and copy write a Hero named "Is" Just imagine the lawsuits i could start and royalities i could get !!!

If someone ever called me cracker i think i would burst out laughing.. I dont care if it ment im the biggest pile of <bleep> Or not..
words can only hurt if you let them. Besides ever see the look on someones face when the try to insult you and you laugh at um? they get soo fueled.. though it might get ya hit.. but hey they will be the ones spending the night in lockup, not me
Yo cracker, get outta my way..
Bawhahahahaahaha cracker? You call that in insult? Bawhahahahaaha
dont get me started on this whole profanity thing.. the funniest is when people say.. Its profanity, it doesnt nice..
well i guess
Duck, stick, witch, wick, floody, and who knows how many other words should be banned.. Cause "they dont sound nice"
revolution !!! Nothing is profaine.. except the meaning behind it.. You can be far more insulting using normal words than just saying Awww <bleep>
I could make an example but id probly be banned
Cracker is a racist term when applied to a Caucasian. It is a vulgar term because it is used to demean another based off the amount of melanin present at the time of interaction. It is a word that is banned because of that meaning.
It isn't the power that individuals give words that matter, it is the power that people give words. That is the problem with that argument that has always bothered me. You would hate the word "cracker" if it had at one point, denied your ancestors or relatives of not the ability to eat overly cooked biscuits but their very humanity, the ability to be recognized as human. It is the power that people, as groups give words that allowed words to create situations such as the rampant black slavery in early American history, the subsequent subjugation and mistreatment that followed down to even the Shoah, and countless other genocides.
Words can't just be words because words have power, we need to respect them and hide the ones that have been burnt, ruined and turned to something worse then words should be allowed to. So, that word you don't think is all that bad, that is just a word, could easily make you less then human tomorrow, make you something horrible and soulless, to be feared, like a conservative.
soo when does it end? maybe we should ban Bloody, what about [censored] (ohh guess it is censored.. its what you call a cigarette in england) i could make a giant list of words that in one place Means something bad, My point is when does it end?
Its not the "word" its the context
whats worse? calling someone a Soulless, subhuman piece of excriment that never should of been given the gift of life? or calling someone a <bleep> head? Id be far more offended by the first.. atleast they put some thought into it.. insted of some slang thats "supose" to be an insult
and no.. I dont hate any word.. No mater how derogitory.. Im also not an ostrige that sticks his head in the sand and pretends something does not exist..
ackknowleging that removes the power, slang and soo called "bad" words is just a cop out for a deeper meaning, that and something for some people to feel supieror by saying the Dont "curse" Id bet you would be very surprised how many words you say in your daily life that in some place you are speaking something completlly insulting.
Probly didnt know Chicago ment something bad did ya? The word "strip" is banned on SOE forums.. this censorship is way way over board. Im sorry, i dont believe in censorship in the first place, but when your tagging random words and not the meaning behind them i think it crosses the line.
While, not a fan of onions, I wouldn't really say that a corruption of the a Native American language's word for onions is that offensive.
You can't remove the power from words because the power doesn't exist in the words, it exists in the power people give to them. Some random guy wanting to be able to a racial slur doesn't make it not one.
The British term for a smoke is derived from a term used to refer to elderly widows that had to make a living collecting bundles of sticks called a term we all know, they were called "******-gatherers" and soon the second portion was dropped and the phrase for the bundle of sticks remained, it became a term for doing hard-work with little benefit, and along the way also became a negative term for homosexual men. It was shortened again and became a term for smokes. It's not like the evolution of the phrase was divergent and it isn't a widely accepted phrase or one used in polite company. It is a term used by British individuals typically called "chavs" and speaks more of their ill-nature then anything else. It is also used by people to create arguments for more freely allowing the usage of offensive terms.
Personally, I find it enjoyable to spank myself with a baseball bat while having my hair up in pigtails, it isn't a good hobby, and I don't find it particularly offensive, but someone would, everyone in particular. You can't use your standard alone to judge the value or importance of words, that is where sympathy or at least empathy comes into play.
I'm gonna guess that you are a straight, white man, y'know, the thing that has been in power for the vast majority of human history. Your family and racial history likely doesn't contain anything to instill a sense of respect, fear or contempt for any words or patterns, and so you don't have any of that, but other people do.

Well, it doesn't work that way. See, the word "cracker" was not banned because it's trademarked or anything. Its banned because its considered an offensive term in some places. In Mission Architect, when you encounter a word that's flagged, read carefully why its flagged. Not everything is flagged because of possible copyright infringement. There's an "or" in the explanation.
As for copyrighting common terms. You can't do it. No one has a copyright on "Star" or "Wars", but together as "Star Wars" they can.
Intel stopped using numbers to name their processors when they learned they could not prevent anyone from using the term "586" to name their own processors. (Way back in those days there 3 big processor manufacturers and a 4th very small one. Ok 2 big ones, a medium and a small manufacturer.) That's when Intel came up with "Pentium" which is trademarked.

Yeah I was suprised at the Cracker thing to. I found that out back when mayhem misisons were first introduces. The badge "Safe Cracker" was bleeping out the second word and I couldn't for the life of me understand why. I knew what a Safe cracker was. It was apropriate usage. By itself I always thought Cracker was something you eat. To this day I have never heard the term cracker used as a curse outside of these forums telling me it is a curse word.
It's a curse word because people want it to be a curse word.
Out of curiosity. I wonder if this is censored.

accually, im part english, nordic, and amercian indian, and grew up poor soo trust me ive heard my fair share of put downs. butsaying that whites have been in power for the vast of human history is well pretty well, Just competly not the case.. Eygption, aztez, myans, bysinteens, yesh, asian countries like china have been civlized for 2k years before whites even got outta the dark ages.
But the point isnt what i put on words.. or what i think, or some debate on philophy, Its about a filter that just doesnt work... Hate speak, and words that have double meanings are two completely seperate things. Thats what this thread is about. No one is saying that we should have Hate speak in MA.
Safe cracker, Soup and crackers, Poly wanna cracker.. Not being able to use a phrase like that is rediculous im sorry.
Sad when i can type Coochie coochie or say it to a baby and get him to laugh.. wonder if you know how offensive that is to some playing..
The filter is broke, plain and simple
Maybe next time im in a restraunt.. ill say.. can i have the tommato soup and some of those dryed up sqaure salted things.. wouldnt wanna offend anyone.
The other name for richard, a male chicken in a coupe, a female dog.. the list, well its pretty darn long. You just gonna ban everything that could possibly be used in a bad way? Ive already had to rethink a bunch of dialoge over this filter. Yes i can do it, but it many times changes the whole flow of the phrase.

We can't say cracker...but I bet I could publish my arc "Randy Rogers and his Rusty Trombone"
As well as making a character called Dirty Sanchez, I imagine.
Face it, we're just dealing with a bit of an overkill sensor and I'm hoping the devs give it a look and make it a bit more practical.
Dec out.
They're really going to limit the kind of content we can create if they start blocking the names of their own characters. I can't name even give an ambush the non-visible identifier "Cabal".

That was the perfect word for my huge Clockwork abomination. The Clockwork Juggernaut. Anybody have any other suggestions?
EDIT: Never mind - for some reason Colossus is allowed
Wrote "Copyright Marvel Entertainment Group" across the front cover. This was after getting an error stating that the word "Ultimate" was not allowed due to copyright (I know it's trademark, but the MA says copyright)
