Discussion: Developer Diary: Ken Morse
I think you can add almost anything to CoH and this looks decent. However, I think the DEV team is straying away from the epic comic theme - the costume clad super-villain/hero. You need more actual super powered villains. Perhaps a new group outside of the Recluse and Rikti gang. A new, small opposition would be cool. Lately, the CoH experience has me feeling like it's a lot more fantasy than super-hero (if that makes sense).
I have to say the Savage Land and that type of thing was my least favourite content.
Anyway, I hope the future issues shift focus to making things a bit more comic/super.

I just wish we can travel to a WW2 era zone.
It would be cool to fight actual Nazis instead of Facists.

Yes, WWII is such an influential period in comics. It would be fantastic to be able to visit it and participate in it.
What would be really awesome is if the zone was a sort of "PvP via PvE" zone, where heroes would assist the allies by fighting the Axis, and Villains would assist the Axis by fighting the Allies, but in their own copy of the zone. Missions completed by either side could have some effect on the opposite side, like unleashing a giant wave of tanks, or Sky Captain-style giant robots. If you wanted, you could also have a PvP version of the zone where actual full-on PvP could take place, but I'd love to see a zone that had the Hero vs. Villain struggle in it without the very different style of actual zone PvP (e.g. superjumping hit-and-run stalkers, TP Foe + mines and caltrops, 8 on one ganking, long periods of unbalanced population where you have nobody to fight, or you're the only one on your side-- all things I don't find particularly "epic" or "challenging").

So like "Recluse's Victory" with a WWII feel.
Yeah, I could get behind that.

And that's the biggest problem the developers will face, of course. They have three options - 1) force heroes and villains to both unite against the Nazis, which will irritate some villains as they receive yet another zone where they have to behave heroically. 2) Heroes aid the Allies, villains aid Axis - and a million complaints are made on the forums as people want to help the other side. 3) Using the branching dialogue system, players can choose who they help, but I can't help but think they'd worry about having people helping out the Nazis.
Also consider costumes. If you unlock military costumes, then do you unlock Allied-style costumes by defeating Axis forces? If so, then you must unlock Axis-style costumes by defeating Allies... do we want people running around dressed as Nazis?
I'm not saying the issues are insurmountable, just that I think there are problems with that time period and I believe we'll see easier to design periods first.

I've heard alot of great ideas so far in this thread, but I guess I'm a bit surprised that everyone is centering on Nazis and WW2. Taking history at face value will get old fast...did we like it much when we were in grade school? Perhaps big twists are needed...I was thinking of an Atlantis-style concept but perhaps center in on the HIGHLY technological side. I'd also like to see a zone someday that is make-believe...literally you walk up to a contact whose power is to daydream, and you can be incorporated into that dream...I got the idea from watching a group of carnies and I can see it being pretty fantastic. Perhaps a mix between Cirque du Soliel and MirrorMask?
looked up the making of chemeriora or whatever the word is. I like the natural look to it and i love natural stuff. But if they where to do another time travel thing, it should be in the future in epic starship fights and its your job to save the ruler of the UPE (untied people of earth) And your job is to go into starships and take out the commanders and ship components. And you are still fighting the rikti but in mass numbers and they have allies.
<just a wild thought>
But i love the looks of the map, Looks like my main toon will be more at home in a world of naturals and magic. Cant wait to try it out.

Greek and Roman inspired genres...let's see...
Wonder Woman's Island
The Olympians in both DC and Marvel
Countless Greek/Roman inspired villains and heroes in published sources.
The fact that most superheroes are extensions of the mythic hero archetypes.
Superman - Heracles
Batman - Odysseus
Spider-Man - Sun Wu'kong
etc...

When would we start to see moonbases? and if so, possibly some real other aliens (vs. those fake ones in the shadow shard which are copies of nemesis, etc, though the rularuu are good!). I want to see future issues of CoX be able to expand the subscriber base and i agree with other comments that we don't want to turn into yet another fantasy mmo. I do like the idea that perhaps we could do some more scifi, perhaps heading to the rularuu/rikti homeworld finding out that they are in cahoots or that we are in between an intestellar war between them. If a TF could be constructed that could include transit in a starship to the homeworld and have us fighting on the ship including it shaking as it took on enemy fire (can you say photon torpedoes!) and perhaps even being able to see space from inside the ship. states could be like in the captain chair or something. then make the rikti homeworld something to behold, rich in texture, detail, scale so that is more than a city, but a whole world (let us compete with WOW!).

I thought it was amusing how they're talking about "stretching the genre". Traveling back in time has been a staple of super-hero comics since they first started! Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family have done it! The Fantastic Four have done it! Iron Man's done it! The Avengers and Defenders have done it!
Marvel's Hercules is the original Greek hero and the Avengers have traveled to Olympus to save his butt plenty of times.
Iron Man's been to King Arthur's court to battle Doctor Doom.
DC's Etrigan the Demon comes from King Arthur's time.
and so on and so on...
Maybe in terms of video games, Issue 12 is stretching the genre. If so, it's nice to see COH catching up to 60 years' worth of superhero stories!
Now as far as where to go next, I'd love an extension to the Croatoa storyline where we visit the land of the Tuatha de Danaan. More monsters based on Celtic mythology! Celtic faerie princes and princesses that need saving! More costume options! More goblins and hobgoblins to battle! More dwarves and gnomes to hang out with! Plus a sinister plot by the Council of Thorns that involves using Troll gang members as their minions!
Superheroes are a wonderful jumping off point to really any genre. There's no reason to limit it to urban crime. But if you need more ideas, how about:
- More aliens and alien body types for players to use.
- Dinosaurs. Seriously, dinosaurs and superheroes are a perfect match!
- Dragons! Think "Dragon Wars" or "Reign of Fire" but with superheroes!
- Gothic horror! Superheroes versus vampires! Scary castles in Transylvania! Secret experiments by The Council!
Sorry for the rambling post. Issue 12 just has me pretty jazzed for the future!
Well, since we're on the topic of stretching the genre, I'll give a few suggestions.
WWII: Blue Side, fight Nazis and save the Jews, bomb Nazi camps, and fight the Japanese in Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima. Red side, fight the Allies and round up the Jews, prevent attacks, lead attacks on other Nations, and fight in Pearl Harbor. I'd want to see it like suggested before where it's a copy of the same zone, but different for both sides. (Meaning that its not PvP, but it is the same zone as for the other side.) Access at lvl 40.
Prehistoric Times: For prehistoric times, I want something like RWZ where it's cooperative, or as mentioned above. For mission and story ideas, i want to fight random swarms of small dinosaurs as they emerge from the trees, (which would be treated as doors), large dinosaurs as they roam the jungle, fight alongside or against cavemen, save people from dinosaurs/provoke them to attack others, and save humanity by bringing species back to the present, like in the Star Trek movie, where I believe they were saving a whale because it was the only thing that could talk a certain language. A main feature here would be a dinosaur you can tame, being able to call it forth from the past every two hours. Access at lvl 20.
The Future: I want to see flying cars, huge skyscrapers, robots, cybernetics, and flying policemen. For this, I say we do something like Grand Theft Auto. Red Side, As you destroy/steal things, police will begin to chase you, then bring in larger and heavier weaponry and more troops, till you get to a certain threat level, you are granted debt protection till you zone and a xp bonus, about a normal missions worth. Then, as you reach higher and higher threat levels (Probably going up to 5 or so, which would take about 2-4 hours) you'd have mounting xp bonuses, and more things attacking, until they send a massive wave that has to kill you. Blue Side, your job is to stop any villains, with regular attacks by them every few minutes. (Note, this will be villain gangs of the future, not big AVs) Then if you thwart enough of their attacks, an EB will attack, having a good sized gang with him. If you defeat him, you will get a mission sized xp bonus. Then, the gangs will riot (We're talking a mass outbreak of villain groups, somewhat like troll raves, except all over the whole map) ,which is when you get the most xp. The whole map would be scaled to lvl 40, (Like how Rikti are scaled to 30), and you would have access at lvl 30.
Fantasy: No matter what people say, I want a fantasy zone, with humans, orcs, elves, trolls, undead, and dragons. I think, you should be able to join a side, (one of the ones above), and then deal out mayhem to the other groups, gaining ranks in the faction. Then, as you grow, you are granted important missions in the faction. Newspaper missions would be things like raiding camps and caravans, or kidnapping royalty. This would be a pve zone, copied over and seperate. Access at lvl 25.
Not exactly relating to zones, but Vehicles. After all, almost all the superhero/villains had some type of vehicles. I think, with this, you could add a outerspace zone, (See SWG, but make it much better.), where you fight others like rikti in your space ships, or you can chases with villains/heroes, either in a Catch the Bad/Good Guy type, or in a Get to X Location First type mission, which would be another great addition, and also get more console gamers to our side. You could even buy an customize a super group vehicle, then fly it around and do SG missions, only accessible from your base, if you have a sg vehicle.
So those are my ideas, and guess what devs, if you do some of those, things like WoW won't know what hit them, because people will start leaving them pretty fast. You'd at least get a lot more money, with which you can advertise on TV/Internet. After all, I think if more people knew about CoX, they'd play it, they just don't know.
I have to comment about the Gold Digger comic here.
One of the best things about Gold Digger is that, if you wait long enough, practically every genre will show up somewhere.
Go to Jade, you have high fantasy with elves, dragons and trolls.
Want Streetfighter-esque martial arts, there's a professional league for that as well.
Space Opera and Space Warfare? The whole sequence with the trip to Stripe's homeworld.
Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider flavor...all through out.
Government agents and espionage...Agency Zero.
Gothic Horror - the Undead universe.
Gold Digger has it all...
And wouldn't be great if CoH did as well?

Again, I think if you looks at some classic comics and their epic storylines you'll get a good idea of what works. This Roman thing is weak. It should be a new group of super enemies, different aliens, different planet etc. That's what we want to see. The Roman stuff is ok but enough of it already - for a supers game this isn't too super.
For example, most of your opponents don't even look that super or seem it. The CoT (weak), street thugs (your supers are being beaten by street toughs..ugh), carnies (a bit better but not much) and the list goes on. There are some great opponents along the way too but the ones noted don't make me feel like I'm a super in a comic.
The DEVS need to focus back to super hero/comic stuff. New group of costume clad opponents. Maybe a new group of 4 or 5 main evils and their henchmen who are also costume clad. Anyway, spend some time coming up with a good look and add them into the mix for spawn groups and adversaries.
Since you have some new revenue streams coming up (costume packs and in-game ads) you can get help developing some new super ideas.

I disagree... a lot. I don't want more aliens, or a different planet, or any of that. Because guess what, it's going to be extremely similar to the Rikti. And even if it was different, like the dragons from Marvel, I wouldn't want it. We have a great base of heroic things, but if they don't diversify, the game will become stagnant and boring. No, CoT aren't weak. No, street thugs that come into possession of magical artifacts and spells killing your character doesn't give you a sense of not being super. Any super hero/villain that gets cocky and takes off more than he can chew, will die. They are not all powerful gods, who's enemies bullets reflect from their skin, and enemies attacks do nothing to them. What we need, is interesting enemies, because I for one don't want a new villain group that is exactly like all the others. What the devs would do, would be put new costumes on Longbow, and then call them (Insert Name Here) and that would be your group. Guns for minions, guns for Lts, special powers for bosses, EBs and AVs. Possibly some weak powers for Lts or minions. But thats almost exactly like the CoT, and you say they're weak. The thing MMOs come under fire from the most seems to be being too repetitive. In WoW, go to camp, and get a mission. You go out, collect 5 bronze bars, go back. Get mission, collect X, go back. In CoX, it's get mission, go to mission, kill X, get mission, go to mission, kill X... The only change we might ever get is PvP, and there's no xp in that. We need things that are interesting, we can relate to, and are unique. Revolutionary. I want some change in the system of the game, and diversifacation.
Incarnate, we're going to have to agree to disagree. I just stated my opinion and so have you. Its input and I think opinions need to be posted so the DEVS can get a sense of what people think of they're work. This, I would think, is key. An unhappy majority = unemployment for the CoH team.
Anyway, I am hoping we have some more costume clad, super looking enemies. That's all. Aliens can be completely differernt than Rikti (all aliens are not Rikti). Let the creative juices flow and let's see something more than guys in robes and street toughs. They're fine and I like that content but we need to remember this is a super-hero game. Not D&D, Grand Theft Auto or some other genre. Incorporate those aspects but make it more super comic-ish. Where are the arch nemesis...where's the collection of super baddies with their own crew....Dr. Doom, Magneto etc. I don't want to see any other 'time pieces' for a while.

I like the future and fantasy ideas etc. I don't want to see WWII items or any of that ilk. It was an actual event and it was a sad state of humanity. It was real evil and I'd prefer the funny book kind in my games.
Anyway, I think too many servers have minimal numbers and makes it tough to team. Any chance of closing down a few low number servers and adding the English Euro servers to our side?
I'm still kinda new but find it impossible to get help on the less populated servers. So, I was going to suggest a service in the game that allows us to get the help of a NPC (much like the ones we get tagging along when we rescue them in a mission). You have a bunch of different looks, ATs etc. Each DEV could make some new costumed types that you could come team with you. It could be the CoX version of Hero for Hire. That way if you can't get human help you have an option. Soloing can be tough on some missions and sometimes you just can't wait for help Anyway, just an idea for a future issue.
how about instead of doing an era that is rife with comic book heros allready like WWII, why not try going into a new direction, like americana heros in the era of westward expansion? i mean come on, look at the list of heroses from this time, Paul Bunyan (axe tanker), Pecos Bill (storm powers), Danial Boon, Davie Crokit (both natural blasters), John Henory (twin hammers), in fact you could even say Jonny Appleseed (plant powers). lets not leave the villans out with such as The Jersey Devil, and Typhoid Marry, maybe even a PvP taskforce/zone looking for The Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine.
You should make a Devouring Earth dedicated zone, a hazard zone and have a forest kind of like the one in Perez Park, but with a underground route into a tunnel at the beggining of the forest, with a bunch of Vazhilok and Banished Pantheon thrown into the tunnels. At the very end of the tunnels there's a room that holds a giant living tree such as the one in Villian respec missions. I think I made too many faults with old stuff there but hey, it's an idea.
Time Travel can go both ways.......
.....how about traveling to an alternate future.....say about 1000 years ahead? (This future would assume that we were finally victorious against the Rikti and were able to prevent the Coming Storm's destruction of mankind.)
Can't come up with a name? Click the link!
More costumed villains/heroes would be nice. It could even be a feature for the archnemesis system that many want.

What i would like...
A ruined wasteland, lava-looking based... A vision of hell to account for a Hellions comeback (yes... how about a High-level Hellions menace...)
A gothic-zone... with "real" vampires and werewolves... Different art from the council ones... Something to feel afraid of the dark...
A floating city... water all around... very high-tech looking...
Cultural references... India, Japan, China, Russia... something to say: Wow, they did a little research here...
A zone where some powers suddenly stops working... maybe a place with travel powers suppression... a magical city with a magical tyrant...
Well... thats some history seeds i would like...

Yes. I can get lost on a straight-line map.
I dig the Roman zone for the look and the faction and the hints about story, though personally, it seems like waste of HD space considering there only appears to be a bunch of timed missions and a TF for such a massive peninsula. Once I ran into the town and saw all the people doing really neat things (backtrack: The Midnighter Club has that, too) like leaning against walls or talking to each other instead of walking around or being mugged, I though "oh wow! Something to do!" But no. Buildings and buildings, people and people and people, and all of it unusuable until you turn a corner and meet a purple Legionarii. I'd like to talk to people, or go into buildings and read stuff, or give more like the Midnighter Archivist thing.
I think that all new content should push the technology that's already there, giving you a reason to go back to the old content and upgrade every couple of issues. New TFs make Posi and Synapse less effective, but I'd like to see the zones themselves revamp and new arcs be added to early-game content.
Also, dinosaurs. Go back to the Jurassic. Heck, go back to the early geologic eras, let's face some threat at the formation of the Earth. And Moonbases. And... normal... bases. Revamp those.
Would be interesting to see an "alternate timeline" future where the Villains have become the victors. Where Paragon city is battered and run down and the "red side" all spruced up. Of course, it's liable to be the cleanliness and sparkle that comes from sterility and the rule of a dictatorial iron fist...
Then the heros could run missions to try to keep that future from happening, and the Villains to make sure it does (including war zones, etc).
We are not old, so long as we continue to chase our dreams.

Of COURSE the cross-genre stuff works. The "Super Hero Universe" concept is virtually meant for genre-fusion ideas. Look at the Classic Icons of "The Avengers" where you have a supertech suit of armour (clearly a sci-fi idea-IRON MAN) right next to Mjolner (Straight out of scandinavian ancient Myth-THOR). The Other major company has the same platform in the "Justice League" where you have a crashlanded alien (another sci-fi idea-Superman) side by side with an Amazonian Olympian (More Greek and Roman Mythology-Wonder Woman).
The super hero genre is as malleable as they come. There IS no "outside of the genre" with superheroes. I'm a longtime Vet, (my croatoa inspired toons get thier pixie sidekicks next week via the 4 year award) and What keeps me here instead of the other MMO's is that IN a super hero universe you can drastically change the backdrop of mood and theme, and KEEP your main characters in thier gaudy spandes. We can buy Wolverine in his Canary Yellow and Baby blue spandex tackleing a Dinosaur in the Savage lands we can certainly swallow Paragon City Heroes Timetravelling to Ancient Rome.
Now as to future suggestions:
You guys start Crackin on our World War Two timetravel zone where we can see young statesman, and meet the Sand Kings. I really want to bust up some Storm Korps. A December 7th, 1941 Task Force would be the coolest thing EVER!
And Also: An ancient sunken city of Mu (the pacific's atlantis) with a Hero Sea King Leader who has it IN for Mako & Scirocco. A Superhero universe just isn't complete till we have an underwater zone complete with Hero Sea King Character.
