Discussion: Comic Con - San Diego July 23-27th
Tickets Purchased!! thx
My fiance is thinking I won't want to go back Friday cause I'm not really into comics...But I am into fantasy and anime, which I see they have alot of. So better safe than sorry...
Thx for the tip on Hillcrest ;-p
I'm hoping that we can get tickets to the "pocket D" party in time, and we can use that as our own little wedding reception. LOL
Between broadcasting the wedding online AND having a "pocket D" wedding reception this will be the nerdiest wedding ever!! haha
I live in Hillcrest. Nice area. It is the gayborhood, but also pretty hipster. Used clothing stores, record stores, etc.
1 Day is not enough. Wait until you see the Panel listing. Always interesting stuff to see. Also Friday is Star Wars day!
Bummed I am going to miss it this year. Especially the one year CoX actually does something.
*cries* why couldnt you all be in Seattle instead?? Emerald city comic con I can travel to, Cali is a bit too far for me.
side note, its not really fair people in cali get an in game item others wont have access to. isnt that kinda geographically biased? would be fair if you offered them at all city's cons one year.
I've never had to park when I go to SDCC, but I understand the convention center parking lot fills up early. If you're not getting there until after 10 on Thursday, there will definitely be no spaces left. On Friday, I think you'd need to get there by 7 AM give or take, to get a space at the c.c.
As for whether you need more than one day? You need more than one day just to see the whole exhibit hall! That doesn't include time to see any panels (which are different each day), to walk through the art show, to stand in line for autographs if that's your thing, or talk to artists about commissioning artwork.
Regarding places to eat - Rainwater(s?) on Kettner has absolutely the best steaks I have ever eaten. It's pricey though and requires reservations. There was also a fantasic little dessert place I went to one time about 10 years ago. I thought it was called "Just Desserts", but I can't find any info about it on the web. And some of the best, most authentic Mexican food I've had can be found in the Old Town section of the city. The gas lamp district and the restaurants around the c.c. get understandably PACKED every night of the con.

There is now a Donovans downtown which is comparable to Rainwaters and closer to the convention center. The Hard Rock hotel is now open across the street from the Convention center. They have a Nobu and a nice bar, but very pricey. Tin Fish across the street from the convention center is nice.
Dessert, go over to Little Italy and eat at Extraordinary Desserts.
Mexican food is everywhere. My favorite downtown is Pokez (specializes in Vegan and Vegi. Very hipster though. I also really like Broadway Taco Co. downtown.
You might be better off parking away from the CC and taking the trolly. It is only 2.50 round trip for the entire day.
We rented a car..and we are staying way over at a resort on the east side of the city. So I'll need to figure out how to get over to the Mission Valley parking area...It looks like thats a mall?
Anyways, how late does the train run there in SD? I'm afraid if we miss our 8pm train out from the CC that we'll be stuck across town.
sorry for all the questions but with planning the wedding as well i'm a bit scatterbrained..lol

You do know that they come to PAX every year right?
So us Seattle-ites will have our own Con goodness to harrass the NCSoft folks at. I just happen to be going to *both* SD ComicCon and PAX this year, so I can bother them twice.

There's always the Penny Arcade Expo August 29th-31st, which CoH reps will be attending. Check out the already existing thread about it here.
Gonna try to make it to this with the wife in tow since she would be up for a trip to Seattle. Now if I can just make the finances work in my favor...

There's a mall there, though I believe that there is a pretty big parking area set aside just for the trolly.

You won't be disappointed. I haven't collected comics in over 15 years, but this will be my 20th year going to Con. For the past 3 years, I haven't been able to walk more than 75% of the entire exhibit hall, I've been so distracted by other things. And that's with a 4 day pass and staying in a hotel downtown.

Try hitting reload. The site is really slow right now, but it eventually loaded up for me. Or try Google's cached copy of the page.

It depends on where you are going and what line. For instance, the Blue Line which runs to Old Town from the CC runs on Saturday nights until about 2:00 AM depending on the stop. From Old Town you need to get on the Green Line to go East through Mission Valley. The last stop at the Mission Valley Ctr stop on Saturday is 12:10 AM.
That being said they also run special event trains, which they should run for the Saturday night of Comic-Con at least since that is the most crowded day.
Even then, a taxi cab ride from CC to Mission Valley is about 15-20 bucks.
Maps and Timetables
You want San Diego Trolley Service and you will be taking the Green Line from Mission Valley to Old Town. From Old Town you will be taking the Blue Line (special event, Blue Line goes to the front door of the CC), otherwise you might have to transfer at the American Plaza station to the Orange Line (but Blue Line should take you all the way).

The special event train (Red Line) doesn't run on Saturday. But the other trains have additional runs on Saturday night.
Ack! I just noticed that the info on that page is from 2007, but it's the page that's linked from the Comic-con's web site.

No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded...

True, but last year they did run a "special" train from Mission Valley to the convention center on Saturdays and Sundays.
"Be sure to ask for your Pocket D VIP Pass to gain access to the Pocket D Jubilee event scheduled for Saturday July 26th. The VIP Pass will also unlock a special in game item that was selected for this show only."
Im just saying there shouldnt be exclusive in game ANYthing that only people in certain geography can get access to. Thats not fair by any stretch.

Were you at the NC Booth last year to get your free drawing of your hero by David Nakiyama or any number of other con swag?
I am guessing no and I am guessing it didn't change your game experience.
They and other companies give out stuff every year. It has no bearing on game play and I am sure what they will give out this year won't either. Yellow title, badge, etc.
Nothing worth getting yourself worked up about.
Not to mention the con is not just for people in San Diego. It is the largest popular arts convention in the WORLD.

As far as folks in costume at the party, well it wouldn't be Pocket D if folks weren't dressed up in there.

Well it definately sounds like it'd be a ball, & I have no complaints to be honest about only a few ppl getting a special ingame item that tied into Comic Con Actual "Pocket D: party. LoL I kind of got mixed up & thought it'd be a virtual event like so many others.
I suspect it may be something like the "Temp" titles from certain special events they've hosted or something else that specificaly relates to Comic Con. & Yes Ex darrlin I am sad about not being able to make it down there, but hey maybe you all will make it up to Edmonton, AB, Canada sometime for a comic & game convention & I'll get to hang with you (along with all of the western Canadian gamers that will show up)! I know I've always enjoyed the virtual events that you all have hosted, it'd be awsome to be able to attend a Live one for once.

I have a similar question along the same lines. We have tickets for Friday currently but as I look over the web I'm wondering if we don't need to get tickets for Thursday as well. I'm afraid one day just won't be enough to see everything.
So would you suggest grabbing tix for Thursday as well. Our wedding should be over with around 9:30am so I figure we can get a full 2 days in at the comic con and bump the zoo to Saturday ;-p
Also does anyone have any suggestions on parking...I have never been to SD before so I'm not sure where to park. I know on their website they say to park at the Mission Valley stop.
[/ QUOTE ]
It would probably be wise to get Thursday tickets as well. That way you can get your bearings on Thursday before the complete craziness of the Friday crowds.
I haven't been back to San Diego in a few years, but it sounds like parking at the Mission Valley or Fashion Valley mall, and then taking the trolley to the convention center is the way to do it. Parking downtown should be avoided if you can help it.
Also, if you've never been to San Diego before, you and your partner should stop in Hillcrest at least for coffee or lunch or something. It's the heart of San Diego's LGBT community, and home to some good restaurants and shops too.
