Be More Positive: Reduce Trash Talking

Occasionally I pop into the PvP forums to have a look at how you PvP guys view it, and stuff. I say 'you PvP guys' because I don't PvP. I go to BB for Shivans quite often, and Warburg for nukes sometimes, but the only PvPing I do is the occasional gank from Hide on my Stalker while she's in BB getting some Shivans. Even that's just a passing opportunity kill.

The sole reason I don't bother learning to PvP is the appalling trash talk that I see in broadcast.

I rarely see appalling trash-talk in PvP zones, mostly becuase I don't bother reading it.

My response is: Get over it, ignore it, and realize that it doesn't affect actual PvPers.

Well, thanks for the advice, but to take each of your suggestions in order:

I don't need to 'get over it', I think...because I'm not actually sure what you mean, tbh. Isnt 'getting over it' what you do after something bad has happened that's finished? Like a bereavement, for example? It's like 'come to terms with it AND MOVE ON, isn't it? Since the thing I was referring to ie trashtalk is still happening, I can hardly put it behind me, can I, if i'm to enter into PvP.

Ignoring it is what i do, for the most part, although since it appears to me to be an unavoidable part of PvP (in much the same way that broadcast in PvE zones and the various chat channels I have up are to me an integral part of what I like about this MULTIPLAYER game), ignoring PvP as much as possible is how I do this.

As for realising that it doesn't affect 'actual PvPers', do you mean that the OP isn't one? I guess that's irrelevant to me, eiother way, since I'm not.

'Trashtalk', in the commonly encountered form that we can see every day in BB and Sirens is in my opinion childish, ignorant, intellectually bereft mouth farting.

Spidey's form of trashtalk, however, is witty. If only there was a way of encouragin that sort of dialogue ingame, I reckon you'd get a load more people like myself interested in PvP. I don't mind losing a PvP fight, as long as whoever beats me does it with entertaining panache. I'm not interested in swearylolnoob comments from teabagging prebubescents, however.

I mean, get over the fact that it's always going to happen and it doesn't affect anything except people who let it affect them.

It is a part of maturity to be able to receive such slander and filter out the signal from the noise. Ignore the noise and continue on.

I mean that anyone who engages in trash talk with any hint of seriousness, or anyone who is actually affected by it, is not a member of the PvP community that I support. People who PvP consistently and know what they're doing generally only engage in it because it's funny (when someone who catches on responds in turn), or to distract someone so they can get the drop on them.

I'm afraid that comes with any sort of Player Vs Player interaction in a game where people under the age of 18 (mentally or physically) are allowed in. I'm not telling you that you must endure it, avoid all PvP if you wish, be my guest. I'm just saying that I wish more people would ignore this facet and enjoy what PvP really has to offer.

When I pvp I kind of go into a pvp coma. I dont even pay attention to chat. There have been times that people trash talk directly to me (usually because I pwn their face) and I honestly dont even notice until the pvp frenzy is over and I see it almost scrolled out of my chat window above 10 lines of other random zone chat. I pay no attention to it and resume my pvp coma.

But seriously, we'll never get rid of the zone trash talking. If people dont pvp because of that it makes me wonder if they know about the /ignore command.

I understand that there are PvPers out there who don't act like twats in chat, I'm not trying to paint you all with the same brush. Grinnz and 1st, you make fair points.

Unfortunately (for me, I guess ) I play CoH rather than WoW or any other MMOs because of the genre. For me, using the /ignore command or turning off my chat window would be a bit like reading a Spiderman comic with all the speech bubbles removed.

My favourite fights in PvE are with AVs and EBs, and their chat during combat is of course scripted, and is the typical 'mwahaha' and 'curses!' stuff spewed out by the Green Goblin etc in the comics. It's much more fun for me to fight a villain with a unique costume and character than any other council or freak minion.

PvP is obviously a fantastic place to get a massive assortment of uniquely costumed villains (and heroes from the other side) to fight against, but turning off the chat for me sort of turns them into colorful minions with excellent AI - I still don't feel any 'aliveness'.

As I said, I'm fully aware that its ridiculous to expect someone to laboriously type out a long-winded witty insult or come up with Spidey's snappy comebacks on the fly WHILST also dealing with the fast pace of PvP combat, so it's sort of a shame, but since there isnt a happy medium between a totally mute experience (and even then you can still; see the speech bubbles, can't you?) and a chatbar fukll of 'your mom' garbage, folk like myself are not going to be attracted to it.

As an aside, my GF plays Toontown Online - the chat there is restricted to stock phrases selected from a pulldown menu. Something similar could be implemented in CoH PvP, maybe linked to binds or macros. What do you think?

As much as I hate those slack-jawed mouth breathers that fill broadcast with their excrement, I would have to say no to your pull-down menu of things to say.

There are actually folks who are worth talking to in the PvP zones, and I wouldn't want to be hindered from doing so.

Now, if you can come up with a better way to weed out the undesirables than ignore... I'm all ears.

Why not just use ignore...?

because I can't TOTALLY ignore them. By that, I mean that the cretin who's fouling broadcast is still actually going to be there present in the zone, and probably attacking me. To me, a mute adversarial Player is basically just an EB with extremely good AI and impossible-to-ditch aggro. If the ignore function made me immaterial to them and made them invisible and immaterial to me, then I'd be able to enjoy learning how to PvP in the company of the PvPers who play, fight, win and lose with civility and good-humour.

I wouldn't want to limit the ability to communicate either, Mahogany. I was thinkiong more of an optional thing.

I dunno, that's how I prefer to play. No ;teabag, no ;crouch, just get the 1 rep and get out. I don't crow in broadcast about how great I am and how bad the other players suck, it isn't sporting and I don't have the overwhelming need to feed my fragile ego.

I've put a lot of folks on ignore since I started pvping. I'm in it for the challenge, and when I win yay, when I lose, I learn something (or my machine froze from lag =P). However, while the better players understand that mentality well, lesser players aren't so "pleasant".

I don't talk trash because I hate having to hear it, and almost always it becomes more of a personal nature where the concept of fun disappears. Also, the folks that talk the most trash are merely compensating for their lacking ability when it comes to pvp. Good players recognize other good players in how they fight.

I hate having to put some folks on ignore, but if their attitude and incessant chatter is bad enough, it's done. Believe it or not, there are actually people worth talking to and ignoring all chatter outright takes away from the experience.

I've said this before (possibly in this thread, its been a while), trash talking is pretty silly, but its just gonna happen. I'd like to say I'm above it, but I've been goaded into it myself. There are two things you can do. Just ignore it, and honestly once you ingore some tool mouthing off, you can ignore most of them, or switch to your em/regen or fire/em pack a tray of reds and farm them till they leave the zone.

I like to mix it up.

When I lose, I just say "gg"...unless they trash talk me first, unfortunately. Not to sound sanctimonious, but I wish more people would just say "gg" and walk along like it doesn't matter, because it really doesn't at the end of the day.

or gf...but then they might think you're hitting on them

When i play a buffer i never notice it because i'm too busy, but nowadays on virtue there's really only one guy/group that puts their life into being annoying.

The majority of PvPers on virtue get along.

I can think of a couple, but yeah the majority is ok. Lotta farmers in RV, but some are good sports and will pvp when the opportunity arises and dont whine when they get killed.

So much for setting a good example. You can see by the replies of the active pvp'rs they have no desire to treat each other well or encourage other players. Same as always unfortunately. I posted this same sort of thing a few years ago saying that I don't trash talk and I alwayscongratulate those that kill me. Didn't fly. Same sort of odd responses.

I can't comprehend their need to behave in that manner and they can't comprehend my lack of desire to interact with those who behave in that manner.

So, advice. Ignore everything. Turn off all chat. or, As alot of these pvp'rs have done. Go to arena and fight folks you know or are part of the usual arena gang. Those guys generally help players and each other.
I love the zone fights but most of the big jerks hang there.

Dont get me wrong, I try not to trash talk either, and when some one gets a good kill, as in not three shotting me before I can blink, or TPing me into a phonebooth, I'll congratulate them. Not thats theres anything wrong with someone wiping me out with a BU + Aim salvo, but nothing really to pat them on the back about either.

But the fact is, theres always gonna be people that are [censored], and no post on these forums, as well intentioned as it was, will change that.

My personal favorite was this line from a blaster.
"THAT'S RIGHT RESPAWN AT YOUR BASE IN SHAME. YOU DROPPED SO FAST N00B!!! HAHAHAHA"

This was after he popped BU + AIM and one shotted me with inferno. Of course if I asked him if he wanted to go to the arena for a friendly match I got a "LOL ROFL I PWN YOU IN THE ARENA NUB!!! COME AND FIGHT ME HERE RIGHT NAO!!!!"

w00t for zone pvp eh?

lol The best part is when one of those people is actually a decent player who's just trying to troll zone PvPers into an arena fight they can't win... not that I would ever do such a thing.

But don't worry, the one you mentioned wasn't me. I might be a [censored] to people in zones but I save CAPSLOCK for better purposes
