Be More Positive: Reduce Trash Talking

I actually enjoy the trashtalk. Helps me wrangle noobs into the arena with me when they say things like, "you couldn't do that without your blank."
Then I say, "don't you worry about blank; let me worry about blank."
Really, it makes things interesting. It'd be nice if things were amicable but if people can't take it as a joke [censored] 'em.
You know what they say about elephants that dream of flying, right?
They're [censored] stupid.
I have to say I dislike trash talking a lot.
I was being pwned solo on my pve Ice/Psi dom by a TA/A def with Phase (don't laugh) who held me and slowed me so his BS/SR scrapper friend came to kill me. That's fine by me, I'm new to PvP, learning the ropes, etc. Managed to get the def a few times.
Then a Brute and a Therm joined me, and we started doing well. The two then started complaining how 'unfair' it was that we had a therm. I didn't complain they were killing me when I was solo before, but I though 'Nvm, let them cry and all'
A bit later (RV was quiet) the Brute and the scrapper decides to duel so me, the def and a fire/kin who showed up started to watch it. Then some Spines scrapper appears and kills me and the therm (we were chatting with the other heroes and all). Ok no problem, it's a zone after all.
But the Brute said 'aw man you interrupted our duel' and the Spines guy replied with a lot of trash (he could've just said 'dude this is a zone, duel in the arena' but no, it was 'lol @ duel n00bs go to arena lrn2play') and of course things went downhill from there. I kept quiet because I didn't want in this kinda stuff but it bothered me a bit.
While on my first villain arena kickball (and only so far), I was dying more than the other people on my team and I got a lot of tells after the matches - not saying 'lrn2play', but giving me tips, saying I didn't go as bad as them in their 1st time, asking me if I had any questions, if I had fun.
I'm all for making fun of people I know, even if only in-game, but being trash talked by a lot of people I never even chatted in my life bothers me. If I get owned by a game friend and he calls me a n00b I reply nasty stuff to him because I know neither of us are getting offended by it.
From what I've seen in all the posts in which people got angry in pve due to some team/teammate attitudes, I assume most people would be equally as annoyed by trash talking. Since I really don't like it (not that I actually get angry at the internets anymore) I even abandoned teams I was on my hero because they were talking too much trash to the vills (I'm yet to see villains being too rude on the zones but as I said I haven't pvp'ed a lot - Hell once on my Mind/Emp I said 'aww no fair, I get hunted by everyone cause I'm an Emp' and a vill said 'Roll another hero, you might have more fun, Emps are usually our first targets when we see them, a good starting pvp build is a fire/em blaster').
Yeah I tend not to take it too seriously, it's only a game after all, I didn't get angry with being ganked while watching a duel, but I can see how something like this discourages people in PvP. Nobody called me names and all because I was never impolite in the zones, but I'd be a bit annoyed if I was called a n00b lrn2play just because I got myself killed in some situations I know I shouldn't have.
Epic potential right here.
I'm tempted to simply copy+paste various responses to this as it's come up so many times before, but *meh*
Honestly, the trash-talking is mostly from those with the least amount of skill who've found the scissors to their rock, the paper to their scissors, or the rock to their paper, and have been worked over by everyone esle in the zone. They need the people that you bring into the zone to feel good about themselves.
So god bless you, sir. You're doing the zones a service. You keep the trash-talkers coming back by coming on the boards and whining about *your friends* getting pwnt by them.
The rest of us will keep farming you both.
Or, you know, you could've spent the amount of time you wasted making this post and actually instructed *your friends* on how to get better, how to ignore the broadcast-smacktards, how to research better power-choices, how to counter certain obvious ploys, how to work together, how to not PvE and actually embrace the dynamic world of PvP.
After all, when you fail at something, it can't possibly be YOUR fault, it must be everyone else that can actually do it. It's gotta be the other guys attitude that's got you licking pavement and frustrated as hell and running to the board in defense of *your friends* and the rough treatment they received in a PvP zone.
Did that Tsoo Sorc apologize the first time he pwnd yer [censored] by healing his mates and debuffing yer acc with his storm? Did you whine at him via broadcast or these baords when he did it? Or did you knuckle down and develop a strategy on how to beat him?
Has an AV never talked smack when he spanked yer [censored]? You whine at him?
Did it help?
Make me out to be an [censored] all you want, man. I'm just another element of the game. I'm programmed to pwn you. And *your friends*
Learn to beat me.
Whining won't help.
Yes, we need more contributing PvP'ers in the zone. Yes it would be nice if there was no smack-talking, but in my experience, the smack-talking always starts by some guy getting frustrated because he keeps trying the same thing over and over, and then [censored] when it continues to fail.
"Stop sucking, n00b!" or "You got PwNd!!!" is typically the response.
And then they come on these boards and blame the responses as the reason they won't come in the zones anymore.
Well, okay. No real loss.
I just don't feel that an increase in population at the expense of actual skill and the need to coddle the lowest common demoninator will do anything at all for PvP in this game. Either bring it, or stay the [censored] home.
PvP has a DNR tag on it's toe, or its DOA.

trash talking will always be present in any form of competition.
i don't buy that whole 'im not pvping because some guy trash talked me'. the real story is the guy got owned and he can't stand the fact he has to re-learn the game for pvp, and that his uber pve toon sucks at pvp and will likely have to respec/reroll AND improve skill wise to be anything special. But hey, it's always easy to put the blame on other people for your own shortcomings, so that's what most do.
I've been trash talked a bunch to, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. If anything, it just motivates me to melt more faces
PvE ego's are fragile in comparison to their PvP counterparts.
trash talk stems from QQ. If you don't QQ, than there's no trash talking. Usually by saying GG or GF leads to another GG or GF. So this post should also tell people not to QQ cuz QQ is an uber taunt for those less mature.
Also the above does not apply for twixt who confuses people with QQ emo poetry.
Wow, this got butchered.
Here you come with a stupid name like Fixer - brutalkillz_

I hope I'm not the only one who is a little disappointed and perturbed that not only [censored] like you exist, but that the powers that be decided to actually let you contribute to something that is supposed to add something constructive to the CoX world (ie. the City Scoop).
I'm quite surprised someone who contributes to the city scoop would post such an asinine and trollish response. Now nobody can be new, nobody can try to learn and augment PvP population if they don't already come with a pvp build and l33t sk1llz.
Not sure how you've come to that conclusion from what I typed. I won't bother myself with typing it all again in 3rd grade language, but instead challenge you to go back and read for comprehension. You can do it, I'm sure you can.

There has some truth to what he says about people complaining after you killed them, but it's a juvenile attitude and if you won, why bother? If you lose, your fault of course, but then again who doesn't ever die on a pvp zone or arena match?
When my lolWarshade got to 25 I took him to Bloody Bay. I got about 2 kills only hovering and shooting on Nova (what do you knows some people never look up). I got held by a Dom, used a breakfree and the dom was all 'ur popping insps noob'. I didnt care and when I got to hold her with Gravity Well, she popped a BF, I turned into Nova and killed her from distance as she t ried to escape, again a lot of trash talk about 'me popping reds' (and I didn't, not that there's anything wrong with that), I said nothing because this kind of whining is ignorable.
What the OP means is about new people trying to pvp and getting trashtalked by people who beat them.
Which I addressed and I think is really at the heart of the matter. I find that most often, its the new folks to the zone that start the trash-talking, post-ownage, when they bleat on about whomever just owned them last. The other side is the guy who has been getting owned all night and finally found someone they can beat and intends on letting the whole zone know about it.
These two types make up the vocal majority of the zone, but not the majority of pvp'ers.
I have little patience for either type, though I've been known to contribute to the noise every now and then for a chuckle or two.

That annoys anyone who dislikes rudeness (not to mention the guy who's dissing you just beat you). Yeah if you play sports there's a lot of trash talking involved and you can claim it's part of the game, but this 'i r r0xx0r and u lrn2play n00b' post is totally lame.
Again, there's some truth on Bonker's post about some people cursing just because they lost, but his attitude... sheesh. It's beyond words. I hope he's in his middle teens, then it'd be understandable at least.
Not sure what my age has to do with anything, but 13 for going on 25 years now, thnx.

While people say that we should have PvP mentors and all that Jazz...I don't think so. You're basically saying that people should have a "Big Brother/Sister" figure to guide them. How does that solve anything? Do they go running to big brother/sister when people trash talk them? To be berated and belittled and to persevere shows character. Those who get upset and vow to "Pack up my toon and go home" aren't anyone that can contribute to the PvP population cause they will always be forced to go running to Mommy when the bad man gets them.
What i'm suggesting is something to help new pvpers skill wise. As it was said, yes, players do go into pvp expecting some measure of success which they will not find. Trash talk is a result and drives these new players away. This pvp tutorial would teach newbies pvp skills so they could handle themselves, not provide a new place other than broadcast to go cry. Again though, its not really related to trash talk directly and a little irrelevant here.
I actually think you make a good point - and it's fine with me if you post your ideas along these lines here.
I'm usually of the opinion that it's best to not ever read the chat that is going on. and for the most part that's what I try to do. I know it's sometimes hard to do when there is this complete fool smack talking when he kills ya with his em/*... But if it makes them feel important. But here's the thing. Just disable the chat so you don't have to see what they are saying. They can talk all they want and you won't have to hear a word of it. You can even set up a bind for when you get a kill. Something like "Sorry but I have my enemy chat off so I won't hear what your about to call me. Have a good day." That's sure to get them mad.
Guess I'll have to recreate this:
Be More Trash: Reduce Positive Talking
Typically, when a mod removes posts they dont want people seeing them. Putting them up may be a recipe for getting banninated, i wont rat ya out tho

Nice passive-aggressive way to make the zone less pleasant for everyone else. Purposely try to get the other fella mad, by saying "HAHA! I PWND YOU BUT I HAVE YOU IGNORED SO YOU CAN'T TALK SMACK TO MEH!" but in a way that allows you to say to yourself, "at least I'm pretending to be pleasant with my smack-talk."
Bravo, sir.
The secret to not having smack-talk in the zones, isn't to couch your smack-talk in passive-agressive false-platitudes, but to simply not engage in it at all if you are truly that offended by it to the point that you have to turn off the broadcast chat completely.
Hypocrisy FTW?

I still think anyone who whines about trash talk in PvP is retarded. It doesn't matter how thick or thin your skin is, it's over the [censored] internet.
Srs bzns.
I have a thick skin (and the ability to dish and/or whine if I feel like it), but others don't necessarily share those traits. I've seen a lot of good potential hero and villain pvp'ers turned away because of the mindless stale trash talk that goes on in SC. It's irritating to me because a lot of times I recruit these people onto a team. They fail, because they are new and learning the ropes, and then they are incessantly mocked by the min/max'ers of the world. So, to the trash talkers, think before you hit that bind:
1) PVP population increase makes life more interesting
2) PVP population increase makes Devs pay more attention
Don't make me distribute ignore lists before I send a team into combat.
