How to *get* a team (quickly)

I get a team within a few minutes of logging in, every time.

This is how I do it (your mileage may vary):

Make some macros:
/macro Find Search
/macro LFT t $target, Want another for your team? (Warshade $level)
/macro LFM t $target, Want to join a mish team?
Stash them off on some tray which you do not use during normal play.

Then, when you log in:
#1. Flip your team status to "LF Any", hit your Find macro, select the relevant level range (etc), sort by level.
#2. Click on a name (already teamed and not "not accepting invites"), hit LFT macro.
#3. If no reply, then repeat #2 (with a different name), every ~15 seconds.

Team seeking:
- If the search list is truncated, then you need to select half the ATs and search again (then select the other half of the ATs), I use "all except Blasters and Scrappers", then "only Blasters and Scrappers".
- If there are no teams running in your level range, but you spot a clump of teamed players which are higher level, you can always ask them and see if they will sidekick you up. They get another body to increase the mob spawns, and you get decent exp, win-win. Worst case, they say "no thanks" (and it costs you nothing).
- Spamming broadcast and flipping your team status to "LF Any" does not work terribly well, but it does not hurt to give it a shot. Just do not wait around for that to come through, get cracking on sending those tells out, because tells *do* work. And using macros makes sending tells so easy.

Team leading:
- If there are no teams running in your level range, but a good number of unteamed players hanging around, you could always (gasp) form your own team. Make use of your LFM macro, and have at it.
- If you are the team leader, be aware of the levels of the people in your team. If you have sidekick space and a team opening, and you get a tell seeking teamage, the answer is "yes" without exception. Help the new arrivals get sidekicked up and "recalled" in to the mission.
- Do not sit around forever waiting for a "pefect" team of size 8, instead start killing and add people as you go!
- If seeking people for your team, you can send out multiple LFM tells at once (to different people), basically as many as you have current openings.
- If you are on a team and someone starts complaining about something which you cannot control, be ready to replace them when they drop.

General:
- If the team just is not working for you for whatever reason, then just politely drop it and go find another, do not torture yourself or waste your time.
- If you team as often as you can, then you will find yourself teaming with the same people over and over, and getting to know them. And they will also get to know you, and (assuming that you are an effective teammate) this will make finding teams in the future that much easier. I always send my "LFT" tells to the names I recognize first.

If anyone is having difficulty finding teams fast when they log in, then I hope that the above helps!

Personally, I've always found it annoying/rude to get tells asking to join my currently running team.

Set your flag, send out a broadcast. If I want you, I'll ask.
Make your own team if you're that anxious.

I love it when I get such tells, as it simplifies my staffing up the team. I can always say "no thanks" if I do not want another. And when I send tells, I have never gotten an annoyed reaction, not once - but I have gotten a lot of teams.

Lets face it, flag and broadcast do NOT work well at all, while tells work VERY well.

You do it your way, I'll do it mine. *shrug*

I don't mind getting tells asking to join the team (and since I'm usually running the group, it cuts down on the "can you add so and so" guff) -- what does vex me is when I see a blank "can I join you" without the AT/level included. Do I want to add Villainous-Villain? How do I know!

Nice guide. I didn't know you could do %t with the Search list, so you just made my life a lot easier.

It is critical that you pay attention at this time.

I thank you for this. I tend to avoid leadership/recruiting on teams because I hate all the typing and I haven't really looked too deep into macros/binds.

You, good sir, may have turned that around for me.

I hate receiving random tells from people asking me to team. To many people never seen to see my "Not looking for team" flag.

I understand your complaint if you have the Not Looking For Team option up, which highlights your name in bright red =P But if you don't have a flag up, don't complain =)

And to the OP, great macros =) And remember everyone, if you like it better, you can always make them into a bind as well.

The "Not looking" flag is the default, so it largely only means that you haven't decided yet.

What you want to do is set the "Decline all invites flag," which is like a big red stop sign that warns people away from inviting you.

In either case, I find that the proper ettiquette is:

  1. Use /findmember to evaluate whether people are on a mission or not, whether their level is appropriate, etc.
  2. Send a tell that describes the type of mission (e.g., Need help with CoT hostages, level 26 Unstoppable in Talos) and personalize the message so people KNOW that it's not a canned message.
  3. Once you've done that, be patient and carry on with your search. Sometimes people are merely away from their keyboard, but they appreciate being asked and will reply as such.

Even though the people that need to read this probably aren't going to....I'd like to add something...

If you're leading a team, and looking for more members, a grayed name means that the person is on a team, thus cannot join your team.

I can't tell you how many tells I've gotten from people to join their team when I was already on a team and have completed a few missions with them. I could understand if I had just joined the team, but it's almost quite rude when you're already teaming. It's like saying "Your team sucks, and mine is better".

Maybe you should find another game to play or perhaps hide when you're on a team. MMORPG. Look it up.

It's great how we have a "Looking for team" flag, but I, for one, would like to see a "Team Looking for More" window. Players LFG could see any groups LFM before /telling others.

Almost always when I get a tell from someone asking to join my team (and it happens quite often), they never say their AT or level and when I look they will be a number of levels below whatever mission we are doing. No one seems to want join teams at their own levels.

On the other-hand it seems then when I'm not on a team and someone sends me a tell asking to join theirs, they give out full details - mission level, zone etc. which is good.

I don't mind getting random tells from players LFT but i think it's very annoying when i'm let's say a lvl 40 and getting a tell from a lvl 10 asking for sk. what are you going to do for the team, brawl everyone ?

Not always true, like someone posted it is usually default when you sign on and might've forgotten to change to lft (i know i forget more than i care to admit )

Nooooo, your name is only grey if you're already on a team. It only turns red if "Decline All Invites" is turned on. For all other settings, if you're solo your name will be blue.

Also, the window does not refresh automatically. If someone just joined a team, their name will still be blue until you refresh the window or hit Search again. Just joined meaning, like, in the past couple minutes. Someone who has been on a team for half an hour will be rightly annoyed if you try to ask them to join your team when they obviously already have one.

I'm not the droid I'm looking for.

MA Arc ID 8121: Rapp'Mas'Ta's War. The Rikti are trying to incorporate sonic effects into their weapons? THAT can't be good. Maybe we should ask them to stop.

Being someone who's on the other side of the equation - one frequently invited, but almost never starting a team - I'd like to emphasize this point.

Even though I'm almost never looking for a team, I don't mind getting the tells, partially because I know it's better than the alternative (blind invites without any such request), partially because if someone seems nice enough I might decide to join even if I wasn't looking, and partially because sending a message first shows some respect for the people you're looking to team with.

So, please, [u]always[u] send tells and wait for a response before sending the team invite.

So what I thought I'd do is return and pretend I can focus on something.

Sorry, I think that was me, I don't ask them to join a team though, just to possibly combine because you can get 4-3 more teammates at the same time.

As stated before, rudeness appears when the person asking doesn't reveal anything about themselves forcing the leader to ask questions they should not have to.

I find the simple inquiry of "Does your team have room for a lvl 23 scrapper?" to be very successful.

When I do get blind tells for request to join, I am usually discouraged to see that they are from people -3 or more from me. I have never gotten a tell from someone above me and rarely from someone my own level. I think some of the hostilty from the blind tell debate stems from people 'phat xp' from a higher lvl team.

If you get a tell, you can generally guess the level of maturity the player has IRL Moreover that's better knowing you'll get someone proactive.

I won't reveal my tell but it's giving several information to the receiver:
- politeness
- maturity
- what he is getting

Starting a tell with "Hello, ..." goes a long way.

But the original statement didn't have anything to do with inviting someone who is already on a team. The original statement was about asking if one can join an existing team. Done appropriately, that is an entirely reasonable thing to do.

It could be rude if the requester was deceptive, repetitive, etc. But just getting a "Hello, I am 25 blaster; can I join your team?" is not rude. Neither is saying "no, thanks".

I dont mind being asked to join my team. If I have room I usually let them join, becuase I like to return the favors to others since others have let me joined. I think Suspicous_PKG is a farmer that is why he gets all up tight when peeps ask to join his team, and why he says I will ask you if I want you. Typical harder core Farmer. Put yourself in hide if you don't want tells. If you are not in hide, then expect tells from peeps wanting to join.

I also think it is more rude not to respond to someones tell then not. I hate it when I send a tell and not get a response. just say Full, or something, and I try to be polite back and say thanks for responding. Some server are hard to find teams on.
