What My Six Year Old Has Learned From CoX

Boss Clicky-Clack went down to Atlas, he was looking for a hero to beat.
He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind: he was ready and willin' to cheat.
When he came across this hero dancin' in the street and doin' it hot.
And the boss clock jumped upon a bus stop and said: "Bzzt*click! Let me tell you what:
"I bet you didn't know it, but Clicky-clacks can dance well too.
"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
"Now you dance pretty well girl, but give this clock his due:
"I bet a contraption of brass against your rep, 'cos I think I'm better than you."
The hero said: "My name's Sister Flame and it might be a sin,
"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cos I'm the best that's ever been."

Sister shine your dancin' shoes and shake your booty 'round.
'Cos heck's broke loose in Atlas and the clocks are dancin' down.
And if you win you get this shiny contraption made of brass.
But if you lose, the clockwork wins at last.

The clockwork polished up his brass and he said: "I'll get on down."
And sparks flew from his digits as he spun himself around.
And he moonwalked across the parking lot with an evil click and hiss.
Then a band of gears joined in and it looked something like this:

....... ++
....... * *
........++.....@
.........!!.......!!
...========
...!!....!!!!
...@....!!!!
.........!!!!
......O###O
......!!....... \\
......!!.........\\
......!!.......... \\........._O_...._O_...._O_...._O_
.....###........###....../\......./\......./\......../\

(ugh... that's hard)

When the clockwork finished, Sister said: "Well you're pretty good, Clicky-clack.
"But sit down on that bench right there, and let me show you where it's at."

Fire from the Hellions, run boys, run.
Clockworks on the roof with the risin' sun.
Skulls in the fountain, swimin' around.
"Sister, does your flame hurt?"
"Let's find out...."

(Dancing ensues)

Boss Clicky-clack bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.
He tried to hide the contraption, because he still wanted to cheat.
Sister hit him with a ball of flame and took the proof of her win,
She said, "I can always beat you clicky-clacks, 'cause I'm the best that's ever been."

_Wyll_I love your post!! Like you daughter, my son also started to play at 4 1/2 years old and is now 6. My son's big thing is saving the citizens on the streets that are scared. He always says that he "SAVED THE DAY!" This game has also helped my son to start reading and we have to play pretend coh almost every night.(He names a toon of his and acts like hes doing all the moves while I do the same with one of mine) He has teamed with my sg several times and they can't even tell when it's him or when its me LOL He plays a blaster on the Victory server named War Bishop. I let him get on teams as long as I am with him. All those cute little questions your daughter asks, mine asks similar ones. The one he asks most often is why the people don't fight back instead of just standing scared lol To watch them play and listen to them is like seeing the game in a new way. If he sees someone dead in the middle of the zone he makes it a point to give them an awaken, or make them one if he can. It's just fun to experience. Thank you for sharing your story and starting this topic

Whisper, quit messing up all the cutesy stuff with facts. This was a setup for a "out of the mouths of babes" moments where we believe that this very young girl is the most precious thing since Shirley Temple and therefore her observations are both darling and keen.

Just play along and say "awww, she is sooo cute and funny."

Some days my playtime is limited to my 2 year old's nap time. Last weekend he woke up, came out and saw daddy on the computer, so he walked over and watched the screen. I was swimming past a boat at the time and he said "swimming.. swimming... boat.. boat." Curious what he'd say I hopped on shore and attacked a badguy... when it fell over he said "pop ...it popped... fell down.. it fell down!." and then started laughing histarically (the way only a 2 year old can do). Followed by "again!... again daddy!" At his insistance we street swept in PI for 10-15 minutes laughing uncontrollably every time daddy made something "fall down." The Malta boss Titan "falling down" animation was an especially enjoyable moment.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

Agreed. The devs should wait until they can put this on mission creator.

Great Stories all,

I also have kids who play CoX on Freedom, I a daughter who is 13 and son who is 9. We have 2 accounts and computers so they take turns playing (or not if the chores/homework are not done). Its quite interesting to see how they interact within the game, my daughter is quite the social butterfly, always in a group, or at atlas park talking it up with people... or at ICON, she ussualy plays blasters, controllers and defenders.
My son is the "lone wolf" he hardly ever groups with anyone other than me, he is a man with a mission (police scanner missions. lots of them). and does not have time for small talk. He plays Scrappers, MM's and Stalkers.

My son just had his fist big CoX reality check/dissapointment, He finnaly got his DM/Regen Scrap to 50, he was so Happy, finnaly access to Khelds. A few days latter I asked him how he likes them, he informs me that he'd rather make another scrapper. poor guy.

On a personal note, I envy you Wyll, very much.

Envy me just a bit more. Last night, all my girls really wanted to play with Dad, so for fun, I made a trail account so three of us could play at the same time... even if it is just for a little a while.

When I mentioned to the wife that we only needed her plus 4 more kids for a full PUG, it did not go over well.

This is my favorite type of thread. Very warm, very honest.

_Wyll_

Time spent with family is time spent well. TV, Computer, listening to music, outside play...

All of that is the same thing when you get down to it...time well spent.

When Sister Flame graduates into Lady Flame, she will look back on these times as any kid grown would...fondly and nostalgicly (sp).

As you will and likely already do, I know I would be missing them (the times) before they ended.

Time spent with children doing activities together shows you little hints of who they were, are, and will become.

I envy all of you who are getting to spend time with your children this way, I truly do.

However much I may envy it, I still have the most genuine smile on my face that will be there for quite some time.

Sometimes folks dont know what they start when they write a thread like this...sometimes they do. Threads like this are defining for playerbases. I know I will have alot more patience and good will in game.

Because I am not grouped with someone named Sister Flame...does not mean I am not "popping" bad guys alongside another young mind.

Thanks Poppa_Wyll_

This thread is unrelentingly adorable. I knew I wanted kids for a reason.

My younger brother (10) Played CoX for a fair while, first starting on my account then I ended up buying him his own one for his birthday.

His favourite character was the Giant of Shadows, a Bots/Dark MM, 9 feet tall. The first costume was this... *interesting* red-and-blue leather thing.

A while later he'd reached 20 and brought me in to show off his new costume. I was kinda prepared for the usual style of hideous-but-adorable, but was greeted by this rather stylish white tech suit with grey and gold. He's getting better.

He also loves naming them. Giant of Shadows, Quickbot, Buzzap 9000, Hot Hot Soldier, Sgt. Punk, Half-Oni, Living Mutagen, German Admiral...

Glad to see people still enjoy this thread. I'm not one to bump it cuz I think there is always more important stuff to talk about (I13) beside a little girl who loves CoX... but for those with a hanker for an update, I do have one.

Sister Flame bounced up to me today and asked when the Ski Hill was going to open. I told her that Positron said the 15th. She was not impressed and asked me if I could e-mail "the makers" (her name for the Devs) and ask them if they could open it earlier for her.

I told her she was cute, but not that cute.

Apart from that, Sister Flame and I along with her freshly five year old sister still play about three times a week. Just an hour or so. Enough time to run a mission or two and get into a "big team".

Her interest in the game has not waved. Strangely enough, Sister Flame didn't have any interest Shields. She seems firmly stuck with playing Blasters, Scrappers or Masterminds. I think at the rate she is going, she'll ding 50 when she graduates from high school... but she's taught me its the journey, not the destination that counts.

Peace and hugs from Sister Flame. We're not hard to find on Freedom. Just look for my global (@Wyll) and Sister Flame isn't too far behind.

P.S. Sister Flame wants to know why War Witch (the best "maker" in CoX), in her opinion is not featured in the website banner. No amount of me explaining could convince Sister Flame that War Witch didn't belong there. What a sweetie.

So how does Sister Flame handle the fact, that she is not only an internet celebrity, with fans around the world, but someone that will get a team instantly, on any server, just with the name?

As an aside, please tell me you are keeping this thread logged as a gift to Sister Flame when she is old enough to see how much stories of her have made curmudgeons like 37-year old me, see things from a child's point of view again.

She's very mature and modest about her fame. She is very proud of her small place in CoX, but she doesn't throw it in other people's face on purpose. She does use it to tease her older sister from time to time when she lacks a proper comeback...

Older Sister: "I'm going to party and you are not."

Sister Flame: "So what. I'm famous on City of Heroes and you're not."

As for getting on a team, Sister Flame has begun to realize her name carries weight in the game. She spent an hour at the Ski Hill last night in Pocket D 3 and had to keep saying "No" to several team requests. That's kind of surprising because she doesn't get a lot of /tells ingame when she is playing on Freedom as Sister Flame. If anything, more people seem to know her Villain... Takes Care Of Pets.

I did make a mention that someone may try to impersonate her in CoX with a similiar name. She just smirked and had the perfect answer.

Sister Flame: "People would know its not me."

Wyl: "Why's that?"

Sister Flame: "I don't know how to type. I can read, but I can't type more than 'cat', 'dog' and 'hi'. Anyone who does type is a fake."

Such wisdom from a 7.75 year old.

I did discover that she is a name dropper. Like with her older sister, Sister Flame has a comeback for me when she is stuck for words. It usually goes something like this...

Wyll: "Well, I guess I'll play CoX all night, but you can't because you have to go to bed."

Sister Flame: "So? I'm a friend of War Witch and you're not. That means I know some of 'the makers' of the game and you don't."

'the makers' is her term for "devs".

As for logging the post, I do keep a file of it that I update every so often. Someday, it will go into her childhood keepsake box along with her other CoX mementos that include:

(1) A CoH CD from the year she started playing.

(2) Some of the CoX Heroclix figures.

(3) A nice print of the CGI Comic Cover that my friend made of Sister Flame.

(4) Her Sister Flame T-Shirt.

(5) The City Scoop Interview of Brother Frost and Sister Flame.

(6) War Witch's special letter and autograph comic (One of Sister Flame's special 'treastures')

(7) Screenshots of her three major toons.

(8) A screenshot of Brother Frost and Sister Flame in action.

(9) A photograph of Sister Flame and I playing CoX together in our computer room.

Nuff said.

She is still deciding if she wants it to be a "Sister Flame has been kidnapped by Clockworks and you have to rescue her so she'll fight with you" arc or "Sister Flame needs help to find her missing friends.". We've even tossed the idea of a Clockworks Civil War where a rival power has taken control of some of them and is going up against the Clockwork King. I think she's leaning toward the first one because she thinks a lot of people want to play with her (so she says ).
