snow globe. I think you are reading far too much into this whole thing.

I like to think I reading the event perfectly fine.

The developers wanted to do something fun for the players, offer badges for doing new things and were hoping everyone would have a good time. Did I miss anything?

My point, and the point of the post that Lighthouse responded to, was to make the event fall into line with this perception.

My position in all this is not very hard to understand. I want badges to be fun, especially for the holiday events. In my opinion, the ski badges fail miserably at this, especially given all the frustration players are expressing on these forums in multiple sections.

[ QUOTE ]
I am sorry you had such a hard time getting gold or felt that you needed a special build for it. gold can be gotten by anyone with a zero g pack which is anyone over level 10. So if you start a new character, run to pocket D, get in on a team, do the snaptooth missions, once you run that five times for all the badges you can take the pocket d exit to kings row, pick up your radio and run those missions and BAM zero g pack and a gold medal once you get used to the course. Its really not that hard nor exclusive. you dont need a kin or any outside buffs, just a zero g pack and sprint.

[/ QUOTE ]
All but one of my characters on the server I play on most are over level 15. most are in the 30+ range. 6 heroes were over 20 when the safeguards were in place.

I had to ask a friend who had a character in the 10-15 range to help me get a pack for my badge hunting hero.

Safeguards/Mayhems are not a part of the flashback system, so you would have to get another account to get it. If you have already have had the power and used it, you would have to burn a respec or two. Or call in a Kin.

I mentioned in the post that there should have been a temp power for purchase, which would have solved the problem. I've seen mentioned the idea to reuse the prestige power slide (give it a holiday color) animation as a snowboard as a temp power that you could purchase with candy canes.

I have wildly different times. I spent 14 hours "practicing" the run. I still cannot consistantly get under 25 seconds. Even with the zero-g packs and boosted speed.

I got the badges on a few characters before coming to the conclusion that they were not fun.

[ QUOTE ]
I think the ski slope thing is fun and does nothing to invalidate the spirit of the season.

[/ QUOTE ]
If the leader board was in place, they would still have friendly competition, without the need for awarding these badges. Having the badges, with the times that they are set to, is not a "gift" it is holiday work, so I stand by my statement that they are not in keeping with the spirit of the season or the gift that the event was [u]supposed[u] to be.

THANKS CoH / CoV = FOR 2 YEARS OF FUN!

What perfect timing! (thought it would be jan 11!!!???)

the winter event this year, while sometimes mildly frustrating, has been SUCH a blast!
Badges are totally voluntary anyhow, so i can't complain!
I got Silver on all 3 of my favorites, and now can leisurely collect candy canes until the event stops!

Happy Holidays Heroes !!!!!

Sorry to see how frustrating getting the Speed Demon badge is for some people. Myself, I'm not even bothering to try. I'd much rather spend my time present hunting.

Good luck, though. You'll need it!

(and speed boost, and a jump pack, and accelerate metabolism, and inertial reduction, and...)

Just for an interestng note, dunno if anyone has spoken of this:

Lvl16, Ebon Kitty, Claws/SR scrapper, Champion, skiing, unassisted.

First run: 27.5 seconds Silver
Second run: 24 seconds Gold
Third run: 42 seconds, Bronze.

Again, unassisted... unless you count Power Dash, Focused Fighting, Focused Senses, and Super Jump (which I used twice in the run, one at the left turn, and the other between the second to last and last gates) to be assisted...

That was just sweet. I was wondering if SJ would help...

Here's the one thing about the Winter Event that I find a bit surprising in that it wasn't fixed from last event.

How come Pocket D still does not have the contacts to alter mission difficulty as well as training when one levels up? For winter event they could be in the ski chalet and for Valentine they could be near DJ zero then disappear when the event is turned off.

Couldn't they just be left in the main club on their own side of the club year round? What would be the harm?

Same with a trainer.

Is the only way to get candy canes by opening presents in the city? Or can we get them by opening presents given to us by other players?

Thanks much!

I think they only come from opening presents around the city. Even if you could get them from opening presents from other people, it would be much, much faster to get them from the presents in the city.

Oh, and if you want to get candy canes, consider looking at the prices at Wentworth's. They've gotten pretty low lately.

Just a curiosity question here... Did anyone know that if you are exemplared or side kicked and someone gives you Holiday Cheer you will not receive the mystery gift? I found this out by way of support when I was given 2 presents on a side kicked def and got no mystery gift. I contacted support thinking it was bugged and they went in checked logs and granted the gifts and dropped me an email letting me know that if you are SK'd or EX'd you will not get them. Thought I'd save a few people some head scratching and frustration with this.

Now I know alot of the ski issues are with flying/tp toons, or people with lag issues, griefers, etc. However there are alot of people in the game who do not come on the forums and never have a say in any of this. To me, if we only take what everyone here suggests, we are taking away from the mass of the players. Personally I enjoy the ski slopes, now my toon is a FF defender with SS and hurdle and I have gotten all three of the ski badges, but it still took me practice to know what to do and when. Another thing is, I do not have an amazing computer, I usually get massive lag, and get disconnected at least twice a day if I play so I can see where it can be a problem, however it can be avoided by using some tips presented in earlier posts. Also one thing that helped was looking on here for advice. For example, I steered with A and D, only other thing I did was use my mouse to direct. Just my two inf.

If I hunt in my level zone I may leave the spawn. if I present hunt in a lower level zone I clean up my spawns. my main is at a level where he is at the low end of PI, so its not uncommon for me to spawn purples that I can't take care of. However in Talos or kings row it takes me a second to clean up so I do. I remember my first winter event, running from one left spawn, jumping a fence to find an even higher level left spawn, so I try not to do that.

[/ QUOTE ]

If I cannot handle what I spawn, I get a safe distance away and then broadcast a warning and request for assistance. I'll even check my global friends list to see if anyone is about that can help, if a broadcast doesn't do it. It does take a bit for the frostlings to de-spawn, giving plenty of time for some poor present-hunter to run into my leavings if they are not cleaned up. I try not to screw up other people's fun.

Actually, I did try many of the tips here - and maybe I'm just too much of a spaz to have the seemingly overwhelming sucesses that others report. So, I've switched to WoW for a while. And, while still reading occasionally here on the forums, I'm not missing CoH at the moment.

Now, that is not a CoH bash or a WoW is better statement, simply that the ski issue frustrated me to the point where I did actually have to step away from the game. Silly, maybe, but, still ... last year I had enormous fun on the slopes. The difference was that last year, I didn't have the stuttering laggy issues that I did this year. I have the same computer with the same internet connection set on the same settings... what was different? More people? Whatever they added that started and worked the timer? I don't know - I only know that I didn't have fun. So I chose to play something different for a while.

I'll be back, I'm sure.

You pollute broadcast over that? You can't accidentally run into 15 foot tall, 6 foot wide, bright white animated snowmen, and by killing them, you REQUIRE other people to encounter them if they open a present.

If you leave them, they die when the new present spawns, and squishies can zip in and open it before the corpses derez, thereby avoiding another spawn.

What you're doing is lessening other people's fun, not increasing it. And the broadcast pollution; in the time it would take to get a group together to handle a spawn, most people would have opened half a dozen presents, AND the spawn would have died on its own. I'm not even sure I believe you do this, because I can visualize the flaming you'd take in broadcast.

Er.... I beg to differ. If someone's spawned something they can't handle, and I'm in range, I would GLADLY go help. Mostly because there are a good number of times I've been all but the only person in a zone and suddenly there are +6s around me. Can I handle those? No matter what level I am, the answer is *no*. Is there anyone around to help? Mostly, no, so I wind up nearly dying by trying to train the +6s to the nearest drone - which might or might not lead me past plenty of +4s or +5s in the process.

So, to heck with your snubbing of the requests of others. Once or twice people have swooped in to save MY day, it's the least I can do to help save someone else's.

I do this constantly, usually by debuffing the goons, and can't count the number of times I've given away my last Awaken to a faceplanted stranger (even though they could go to the hospital) or been killed fighting a GM for whom I already had the badge. It's a hallmark of my SG that we do this, and do it with sensitivity to the feelings of the people who don't understand this game's mitigation of "kill stealing".

But experience says that if you start asking people to come clean up your spawn, it takes a bit to get a taker. Not hours, but it's not instant either. It then takes SECONDS to get to another present. So you'd be spending more time broadcasting for help than you would actually playing the game, and the sad part is you'd be doing it to accomplish something that doesn't help people; it actually PENALIZES them.

Again; you're doing lowbies a FAVOR if you leave the frosties alive. You're doing them a DISSERVICE if you kill them. PerfectStorm's stubborn refusal to even address the technical facts presented to him regarding this doesn't change the fact that the presents spawn at the same rate regardless, the frosties are gigantic white beacons visible far away, and the presence of frosties decreases the risk of opening presents for lowbies.

If you can't pay attention to the screen well enough to notice you're running into a friggin' snow drift, that's an issue for you to address, not the devs. I suggest a bigger monitor or better glasses.

Once the Winter Event ends, will we still be able to trade in the candy canes for the badges, etc? If the chalet closes, will the green-clad elf move to another location or do we have to wait until next year to swap out our goodies?

Likely we will sit on them until next event.

My question is this: will Valentine event 08 and Winter 08 finally add the following to Pocket D for the duration of the Event:

1. Quartermaster to sell off stuff u dont need that u gained in the mish

2. Arbiter to go to for training and leveling

3. Representative to alter mission difficulty

For the winter event these contacts could be in the chalet near father time, for Valentine they could be near DJ Zero.

Adding these things would be nice QoL for hero/villain teams so that no one gets the auto-kick from team when they leave the zone to train/sell.
