I'd have to ask, "Why do I need to upgrade?" And there is a reason why I don't need or want to.
I've only been playing for 25 months. It took 4 months before I started a SG. I finished the base in it's current form 3 months ago, so my 50's don't have tons and tons of influence like some that have been playing since I1.
Now that my base is fully functional to my SG's satisfaction, I can ignore the need to keep my toons in SG mode all the time and start trying to make influence toward buying all those spiffy new IO's to deck my 50's out with. And the same goes for my other SG members.
My rent is free. If I don't play on my home server, which at the moment I am working on a 50 on an East Coast server and haven't been on my home server in a month, my base is still functional. I don't have to log in to pay upkeep. I don't have to worry about the 5 small SG's that are still working on their base not being able to use the teleporters in my base if I decide I don't want to log in and pay upkeep. Anytime I log in, my base is there and works without having to trot to Atlas and pay the man just so I can use a teleporter.
I agree with you that the rent is cheap enough on the next size base, but there are good reasons not to upgrade just because you can.
Tech Support Rule #1 - They will lie to you. Usually intentionally.
[ QUOTE ]
I'd say keep the smaller seperate teleport rooms, but put them all in one section of the base so they are close together.
I think that you should upgrade one more plot size, rent doesnt cost a lot at all on that plot, and, even though it says you need to pay it every 2 weeks, you only actually need to pay it every 4. Here is a base picture I copied from a small base building guide. The rooms and layout will supply you and your friends with everything you need.
Good Base Layout
[/ QUOTE ]
That was my pic/guide, and to be honest I've sort of backed away from that perspective a tad. For a small SG that is watching its prestige-pennies, the 4 porter rooms instead of the one big one is certainly the way to go, saving yourself a cool 700k but with no sacrfice in function.
But if you've got boatloads of spare prestige and are staying with the smaller plot-size simply to avoid rent, and really see no reason to upgrade the plot, then the large porter room is a nice investment for that extra bit of elbow room and more options in layout of the porters.
On the other hand, that next plot size up really is quite cheap to maintain and does give you extra room to expand the workshop, for instance.
Also:
[ QUOTE ]
even though it says you need to pay it every 2 weeks, you only actually need to pay it every 4.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, its 6 weeks. 2 weeks is the notice, 4 weeks its due, 6 weeks is the point they cut off power. If you wait to pay till after the moment they cut off power, your next notice doesn't come for another 2 weeks, giving yourself a 6 weeks cycle for rent instead of the 2 or 4.

If you decide you are not going to upgrade, than I would say, stay with the one big room for telepads. If you organize them right there can be a lot more space left over for an area to hang out in or do whatever else you and your friends think it should be used for. If not, you should probably group all of the smaller teleport rooms together, than put your storage an your hospital in another section of the base.
Here are pics of Castle Mortenheim, the base of villain group Sangreal on Victory. Sangreal has about a half dozen irregular players, plus some alts. The concept for the base is, Baroness von Mort is excavating & upgrading her grandfather's castle one room at a time.

The plan is to continue to gradually upgrade as prestige slowly comes in. For now, it more than meets our needs. I'm not 100% happy with this particular layout, but I'll show a couple more bases.

This is the first base I built, for the Paragon City Legion of Superheroes on Victory. It's been through one major rearrangement already, when I replaced the 2x2 control room with the 2x3, I had to move a couple of rooms around, shuffling objects between them.
Using the medbay at an intersection is great, since the actual objects you get for it take up so little room. For those of you with a startup base who plan to grow, DO NOT USE AN OVERSIGHT ROOM AS A CROSSROADS IF YOU PLAN TO REMOVE IT SOMEDAY. Instead of simply deleting one room & building the new ones, you may wind up having to do the whole base over again. I haven't had this happen, but was one of several people giving advice over broadcast to someone who wound up having to do that. I'm going to upload images of 2 bases with oversight rooms later, one of which is set up to be easy to alter when the time comes.
I was going for a clean, sci-fi look for the Legion base, but compared to some of these great-looking bases in this thread, it looks like East German engineering; extremely practical, but extremely boring. I may be changing the entry room on a few bases, now that I know you can move the portal.

Tech can see the monitors in the control room from his workbench. I didn't do this on purpose, but it's a great effect:

Regarding bases running on tight control, or tight space: I could build things on all 3 workbenches, but only had space & control for 2 at a time. I would make the components I needed on 1, then delete it & build the 2nd one to continue working.
Mythral on Guardian has several semi-active or inactive members plus alts. This is a small oversight room base like the thread founder asked about. It's not set up to be enlarged easily, because I don't think it's going to get very much bigger than it is.

Last one, the Jade Citadel, for the ninja/asian themed Kingdom of Jade villain group on Pinnacle. Tiny oversight-room base set up to grow. I've calculated how much prestige we need to have to delete the oversight room & add power, control & workshop & the necessary objects in one session, and we're saving up. The teleporter goes to Port Oakes & Cap au Diable, from which you can get anywhere else. For a cheap, efficient base, my teammates & I like this setup a lot.

Edit: The video is semi-old and there have been plenty of changes to the base... some minor, but the most noticable ones are:
In the control room, we have two new control terminal things.
In the teleport room, we have opened the second base teleporter.
In the base HQ, we have added a new room that contains a teleporter.
Well, I can't resist, I have to post mine, too. This is Anarchy's base on Champion. We started out all of 4 people and are down to only 2 now, so the base is tiny and is likely to remain so, but I really really enjoy working on it. Since I said that, you should know that anything (and maybe everything) you see here is likely to change on a whim!
Now, take a tour if you wish, with my Mastermind Dreadfall :

We can pretend it's a dojo My punks are always trying to impress me. I like that about them.

Lounge That's it for this little tour. More to come once we've built up the pocketbook. For now, time to relax on the couch... and change the channel. There's got to be something on TV....
Yes, 2 teleporters puts a crunch on the power and control. We have to do shuffling if we want to get out a forge/worktable/etc. The teleporters are by and large the most-used item, though, so it just made sense. Plus, we don't mind using the hospitals at all.
It still feels a bit empty to me, but I'm working at it. My thugs and I thank you for viewing!
Hi, I'm BCP, and I'm an 8x8-aholic. My little personal base has been my obsession for quite some time, and now the only reason I want to get a larger base is because I think I've stuffed about as much as humanly possible into my 8x8 base. Anyway, check it out. Maybe you'll get some ideas that I stole from others.
The base (overview) is designed around views down hallways. This is what you see when you enter.
The base began as a place to hang out, but slowly turned into (big surprise if you know me) a Library. Hence, the first room you see is a reading room, adjoined by a small laboratory..
The main hall comes next, and acts as the base hub. It contains the second reading room, the crafting area,, and has a side area containing our base's only teleporter.
Our our infirmary is broken up into a waiting area, and an examination room, with cots to care for the sick.
Our base's main attraction is the library. It is a large (4x4) room, subdivided into several smaller compartments for easier organization. It has a full-sized classroom, a reference desk, and a massive central reading room, which contains most of the library's stacks. The stacks themselves have several nooks nestled away where patrons can read in peace.
Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed the base tour. I'd like to show more, but I've already rambled enough as it is. Contact me @BCP in game if you'd like to take a tour.

I am in awe.
Awesome well thought out base BCP. I like the design!

I have redone my SG base so many times I can't begin to count. For a four person SG I think we have done alright. I haven't counted the prestige, but I am estimating it at around 5.5 million. I could move up to the next size, but I like not paying rent, plus this base does all that we need it to do.

Very Clean Design. I love it
Thanks to both of you for the compliment. I enjoyed every minute of making it. Ok, well, maybe not placing all the bookshelves, but every other minute.
EDIT: At last count, there are between 300 and 400 bookshelves, and over 2000 total decorative items shoved in that little 8x8.

There is a fine line between "well done" and "really well done" I love seeing the fully fleshed out and decorated bases, though the ones which are clearly 'fully functional' but spare on flash are of interest purely because of their efficiency. Myself, I'm a decorator...

This is easily my favorite thread, ever.... These bases are beautiful, and are giving me great ideas for my own just started SG and Base. Thanks, everyone!
Jim
I already ruined my base trying to fix it last night. I am unhappy.
We need to be able to /save and /pause our base building. A simple "make all changes to base?" Yes/No would do wonders for this... I am sick of moving things around, and suddenly I can't even place the teleport room on a fully blank wall, because it says "it may not be accessable from the entrance" when the ENTRANCE room is where I'm linking it.... Then, not able to place the TELEPORTER there, after clearing space on TWO, unrelated rooms, so its doorways can BOTH be set down... and suddenly the tporter is 'in the way' ... so I can't place it, nor move anything else.... *frustrated*

Oh Zekiran I hope your base is recoverable! I truly loved how you did yours...
(I hate the teleporter thing, they give me the worst trouble, too.)

Nothing too fancy, just a very functional one-man base, contains:
Oversight Center w/ Combo Unit and Inspiration Collector
1x2 Teleport Room w/ Rikti War Zone TP
2x2 Teleport Room w/ KR, SC, IP, and FF TP
Medbay w/ Resurrection Rings
Energy Terminal w/ Power Crystal
1x4 Control Room w/ Magic Axis and Bookshelf
2x2 Workshop w/ 2 Salvage Racks, Mystic Crucible
Nothing fancy by way of decorations, but I add a bit here and there as I see the need.

always love seeing Brache's stuff! such an amazing set of eye-candy for any viewer. one of these days, I'm commission her services, but we're gonna need a LOT more prestige built up and, with only 3 players and numerous alts, that's gonna take some time =*( ah well, least we have something to shoot for =)
I have to say great base's all. each & everyone has a cool idea or two.
