Guide to base building for the small SG [I8]
One thing that I have been thinking of trying, and which you might also try out (since you probably have a lot more prestige than I do) to get over the hump from the 355k starter base to the 1011k base with energy and control, is to use the Combo Generator with either a Mainframe or a Generator, but not both. As far as I know, you don't need to remove the Combo Generator. (Although I've never tried it, so it's possible adding other control and energy will "shut it down")
The only problem I've had with this plan is that you have to have BOTH the Oversight Center AND a room for the Mainframe or Generator. You can't put other Control or Power items in the Oversight Center, and can't put the Combo Generator in a Control room. (Even though it's listed under Control)
I also can't really tell if the Power part of the Combo Generator would generate enough power for the Mainframe, or if there won't be enough Control for a good sized base if you just went with the Combo + Generator. I'm trying to get the largest of the Workbenches powered up, but I can't seem to quite do it. So I may still need more power and control.
At any rate, that's a suggestion. The Combo Generator might still be able to supplement your power and control needs even after you have both rooms installed, at the cost of the Oversight Center, of course. (Then again, that's only 50k, far less than the cost of the bigger Control room you used to add on databases prior to getting the Supercomputer)
You also don't even mention the Turbine, which I guess means that it isn't needed.
Personally, I never really felt multiple Teleporters were needed, since I'm the only one in my SG, I always use the one, and just switch the beacon. So I used the space and prestige for a Workshop, and put in some Empowerment Stations along with the Storage. I haven't actually used the Stations yet, which I probably should since I've been hoarding Salvage for so long. But it's important to note they can be used to convert any kind of Salvage without spending the control and energy on a Workbench.
Great guide - been a real help getting my one Mephyt base built - thank you
Awesome guide, thanks.
Is there a guide somewhere about specifics of certain personal items? What can be gotten? What are the requirements?
I'm pretty much the only regular one in my SG, and I have 5 porters, and it's all I need.
Atm: Skyway, Indy Port, Steel Canyon, Talos, Brickstown.
Will probly drop IP for Peregrinne.
Heck I know of one coalition where most everyone has 1 or 2 porters each TOPS, but have coordinated the Beacons to cover almost everything. I recomend going Coalition with a reliable SG or two as soon as you can, it will free up space and choices, not to mention cost.
But for the do-it-yourselfer the op's guide reigns supreme.
Masterminds annoy everybody, sooner or later. Heck, Masterminds annoy themselves.

....EDIT: Ignorant questions deleted....
You know, it's amazing what you'll find when you (read: I) look in the right place....
So I found out that an SG gets 20k prestige per toon up to 15 toons and if the SG goes below 15, they lose 20k prestige per toon leaving. Prestige stays with the SG unless you go below 15 characters. Pretty simple. Still don't know what happens if the SG has already spent the prestige, but I'll cross that bridge when and if I get to it.

Definitely a nice guide.
I'm currently doing my one-man/many-alts SG and I've only just gotten away from the Oversight Center/Combo Unit. This is my setup:
1 - 1x4 Control Room with Mainframe and 2 Corner Terminals
1 - 2x2 Energy Room with Generator
1 - 2x2 Teleporter Room with 2 TP'ers but only 2 beacons placed ATM
1 - 2x2 Workshop as my storage room
5 - Inspiration Bins (yes, I went on a bit of a...binge...during the Winter Event )
1 - Salvage Bin
1 - Enhancement Bin
Total Spent - 1.274 million Prestige plus the cost of the 1x4 room and the 2x2 Workshop.
Ya, I could have a lot more stuffs if I didn't have those Inspiration bins packed to the brim with Tier 3s and Presents from Winter Event.
I'm kinda at the point where any serious upgrade is going to take awhile. I'm hoping to get about another 22k Prestige to place my first Database (and dump the Corner Terminals). Then it'll be another 20k to get my second set of beacons in. Then another 60k for a Medical Room and Rezzer.
*le sigh*
It's going to be awhile yet, but hopefully I'll get there.
One question. I am building my first base and have noticed that though I can place beacons, there seems to be no selection to place the actual Teleport Pads. Are there requirements you must meet before these become available to be placed, and if so what are they?
Edit: I read a little further into the guide and I see what I am missing now. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the guide. It's helping a lot.
One thing I've found out about bases that you don't mention:<ul type="square">[*]Control for Teleport Beacons - Although the requirement is 5 control each, you don't actually NEED them online for your 'porters to work. If you set up all your 'porters then place your beacons, if the beacons are off-line (due to lack of control) BUT your 'Porters are still on-line, the 'Porters will still get you to those off-line destinations.[/list]Right now, my Small SG has 5 rooms:
1) Entrance Room
2) Oversight Center with Combo Power/Control, Enhancement Table, and Invention Table.
3) Power Room with Generator and Inspiration Collector
4) Control Room with Salvage Racks (waiting on the Prestige to buy the Mainframe).
5) Basic Med Bay with Basic Reclamator
6) 2x2 Teleport Bay with 2 Teleporters and 4 Beacons.
As you can see, I'm generating a whopping 1125 Power but only have 75 Control. Power isn't an issue, but Control is in very short supply. With the current configuration, I should need 95 Control (Reclamator -25, 2 Teleports -50 (-25 each), and 4 Beacons -20 (5 each). However, everything still works! A quick way is to sell off all the Beacons so that way the Reclamator and the 2 Teleporters are online, then place the 4 Beacons you want. The Beacons will be offline due to lack of Control, but the Teleporters will still take you to those destinations!
I'd also like to mention that if you're going to [u]NOT[u] become a raid-capable base, then the thing to do is to put the entrance room as close to the center as possible. This way, you get access to as many rooms as quickly as possible.
Here's the layout of my base:

P = Power Room, T = Teleport Bay, M = Basic Med Bay, E = Entrance Room, O = Oversight Center, C = Control Room, and # = Doorway.</pre><hr />You'll notice that I the two rooms most accessed are the Teleport Bay and the Oversight Center. The two ways into the base (Entrance and Medical) are situated between those two!
P.S. I like the idea of the raised platform with the Beacons on them. I'll have to look into this for my base!
This is a great guide indeed!
One thing I'd add is that I personally wouldn't worry about the salvage for the teleporters. Just looking at the upgrade paths, by the time you want to increase your porting capabilities and have to start "juggling" the teleporters, you'll have earned a fair bit of Prestige.
Compared with the Prestige earnings you'll need, going out and buying the salvage to create the Power units to craft a new Teleporter (wherever you buy base salvage and convert it, or buy the Power itself) is just peanuts. What, 50k-100k influence cost for a new teleporter? Really, just not worth the headache, and that's assuming you just buy it all and haven't accumulated a lot of base salvage.
Go. Buy. Get Power.

Yeah. I considered putting this in the guide and then decided that would obscure things further from the main point of the guide (that had already gotten way longer than I had intended) which was to show how a base can progress for a small sg and eventually maximize the 8x8. I am, however, in the process of updating the guide and including some other information that has come up or that I've become aware of, so I might be able to fit this in somehow. Thanks for bringin it up in the thread though so others that read it can be aware of it. You'll also note that if you ever decide to put in the salvage vault, that it screws up this little workaround, as it sits even lower in the priority list for control than beacons, so you must have enough control, *period* in order to make it work, no matter if you place the beacons last.

This is Awesome!! I have used this as a guide for building my small base for me & a few friends. The only thing was my friends wanted storage more than TPers, so the 2x2 workshop went in before the TP room. Now that we have One teleporter in a 2x2 room, and even managed to build an energy room & generator, I'm trying to figure out when it is best to swap out the oversight room for a control room which seems to be a 235k increase. We don't intend to sell any storage, including the vault & Invention Worktable we have in the Oversite room, so the delay is longer than if we followed your progression.
At this point, I started to check your math. In base 4b it seems you swapped the amount of energy between your Database & your rez ring (what I assume you mean by Reclamator - it becomes Rez Ring in base 9 and you fix its control) but the total amount winds up the same.
Base 5b you seem to have forgot to remove the cost of the small porter room since my total is 1,399k for the base.
Base 5b.1 you correct the energy for your Databases, but still use the incorrect amount for the Rez Ring. Also I don't know what happened to the base cost, but it seems to be off by 70K. The 70K cost & 25 Energy seem to follow through the bases until base 9 where I see you having 100 more control left over than you estimate.
The math isn't really important, but it is something you might want to look into fixing if you decide to update the guide for I9 & inventions.
Thanks again. I had problems with room placement until I read your guide. I was afraid to play with bases and delete things until I read your guide. It has helped more than any other base guide.
Born2luz, you probably get this all the time. But thanks sincerely for your comprehensive guide to building the starter base from new players with a new SG on the Freedom server. Thanks for taking out time to enhance our playing experience.
I'm having trouble getting everything to snap to the edges so we can make the best use of our 8x8. Even deleting rooms, it's hard moving the original entrance to the plot edge or corner. Any advice?
Either way, thanks again for your kind contribution to AGI's good time!

Oh wow, great catches on that stuff. I'll have a look at it and get it fixed up in the update (coming soon!).
Glad you found the guide helpful. Happy building!

great guide! sorta like a morale booster, look at it, see where you're at, see how little more you need to upgrade...
i likes it! i likes it a lot!
Political correctness is a stench in the nose of God. Yes, your God(s) also.
The problem with running with less control than you need is the fact that your salvage vault (of all your storage units) WILL NOT WORK with less than optimal control. This makes crafting stuff a real bear.
Thanks for the great guide! I wish it had been created earlier. It took me forever to figure out how to get power going in the first base I built last year.
I now co-lead Spririt of Freedom, and have recently redone our base. Here is an example of our layout:
.......T*TT
.......T*TT

The upper TP room serves only as a throne room at the moment (a joke amongst my friends), until we can afford another 2x2 TP room. (You have know idea how many fights we have had over who gets to sit in that chair! ) We have just now started to run into control issues. We need to place our third bookshelf and maybe a fourth before we can add the third TP room. Of course, we're going to have to have a few bake sales in order to earn enough prestige to cover everything. However, if I sold all the decorations, we'd probably be almost there! But this is our home, and I find it necessary to move the furniture weekly!
Tried this morning to build a basic base for my VG. Put in the control room, the little arcane table to give control and power... nada. It isn't producing anything. Needless to say, less than thrilled. The combo unit is sitting there with a little lightning bolt floating over it.
Lord, the combo unit only works in an Oversight room as I recall..
HELP! Please! I'm trying to edit my base for the second time (we have a huge, wonderful base, but some of the rooms are a little cramped, so I'm just upgrading to the Large Complex (20 x 20)), and I cannot move my entrance room. The last time I upgraded my base, I was able to move the entrance from the lower right to the bottom middle, but now I cannot.
The entrance itself has been cleared of ALL decorations and items, and the rooms I'm trying to move it next to are brand new rooms with similarly nothing in them. Their floors are at the same level as well. I have also set the new rooms in such a way as to allow the entrance to go in the bottom middle or the bottom right, but all it tells me is "Room cannot be placed because it may not be reachable from the entrance."
Please, someone, help me!
I could be wrong, but I think I had the same problem as you one day. Can someone confirm that if you have floating objects the base editor will act funny on moving rooms. I know double doors will give you lots of grief.
As everyone has said, this has been a great help to lots of people. I was wondering, however, if anyone knew of a guide to help you build items for your base? Things like teleporters and advisors are listed in the forge, but other things like the aux for the reclaimer are not. I know some things are unlocked, and my VG has the "auto-doc" accolade, but no idea how to make it or where? Is there a guide anywhere that might list items you can make beyond the basic?
Perfect, thanks!
Thanks for the guide born2luz.
My brother and I are aiming to build a base for ourselves with some functionality and this is exactly what we needed.
You know, just to throw this out there - I had a whole mess of crepes this morning. They're just like pancakes, maybe even better.
