I'm still trying to figure out why, but wingdings will crash your game. I'm thinking it has something to do with it lacking certain characters...but I could be way off.

On another note, I'd also recommend Comic Sans MS...it just has this comic book feel to it.

way cool tip

My opinion, and my opinion and a few bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks, but in my opinion,Tahoma works better than Verdana.

Dunno yet about Comic Sans tho. I'd imagine it's TOO bold, and kinda big, but it would go better with the game itself, since it's loosely based off the actual lettering of Golden and early Silver Age comics.

[/ QUOTE ] On my system it's the opposite, not bold at all, almost pencil thin, hard to read. I need to figure out how to bold it so I can see the levels on the enhancement icons.

Not sure if this will help, but you could try the bold version of Comic Sans MS...the file name should be COMICBD.TTF. Haven't tried it myself, but if anyone uses it, let us know how it goes!

This is sooo cool, thank you very much!

Finally did it. The Tahoma font is a little too light for my tastes. I'll try the comic fonts tonight and see if I like them. When I have the chat window arrowed over so it gets a darker background, I prefer reading Tahoma, but I can barely read some of it when I have the pointer elsewhere on screen. I tried changing the opacity, but it didn't leave the un-focused chat-box dark, so it didn't help.

Still, this is an awesome tip, and I'm going to play around with fonts until I find one that really works well for me.

[/ QUOTE ]COMICBD.TTF looks wonderful! There are still minor issues, pet peeves that I can't adjust the boldishness between windows and places so that the bold isn't too bold, but overall it's great.

I don't suppose anyone knows the name of the font file for entity names? The ones that appear above players and mobs and contacts heads.

i think you would just add bd to tthe name of the montreal font... look on myfonts.com for a list of all theversions of montreal demibold ;D

The overhead font for player and NPC names is mont_hvbold.TTF.

I replaced Mont_Demibold with Comic Sans, and hvbold with Comic Sans Bold

Much better looking.

I like! Hmmm, I wonder if you used the full Arial Unicode font if you would be able to use all the characters?

it is possible for certain...unimaginative....people to mix I and l as needed to make it *look* like they have a certain name, when in fact they have another

[/ QUOTE ]

First of all, what's wrong with that?

Second, don't be so quick to assume that the only people taking advantage of the L and i trick are unimaginative. I think the Parallel Illusion on Triumph is a brilliant idea. If you don't know, all the members of the SG are Phantom Army decoys, once summoned by Illusion controllers, that have gained independence and semi-permanence. We all look exactly like the PA decoys, and we all have the same name, The Parallel Illusion. There are well over 50 of us.

Now, if you wanna be able to immediately tell the difference on your end, I have no problem with that. It's your game, too. But let's not just assume that this feature is always a bad thing.

[/ QUOTE ]

Doing my uber math skillz i have come up with:
there can be only: 64 people with the name "Parallel Illusion"
BUT it could go up to 128 people if you start using that lower case "i" and start turning it uppercase and use "L" in lower case but that would be alittle much. Who ever thought of that give him kudos and a beer.

I found another nice font for this: Californian FB Bold

The I/L difference is noticable, though maybe not as pronounced as in some other suggestions. Still, if you're looking for a very crisp, legible font, this is a good one.

Thanks for putting this together Kari. Its definately getting bookmarked.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention. you might need to tinker with the font size in your options. I turned mine up to 14 point.

Very nice guide, but I do have to take exception to the "unimaginative" assumption for people using the l/I trick.

I have exactly one character who uses that trick, and it is not due to lack of imagination. As a person who is rather proud of her imagination, I have to say I resent that assumption.

Otherwise, a nice solution, if you consider it a problem.

Now, what about the font used in the chat bubbles? do we know that one's name? It's different, it's a version of the default, but it has "arms?" on the "I's". Just thinking, it'd be kinda disjointed to have that different...

I love would to see that stupid i L crap nerfed. If you have no creativity and have to jack a name with those, you deserve to have your name look ridiculous with the wrong letter there. after seeing people spam /ac on guardian with iLiLiiiLllIL names it should have been fixed.

This was a money suggestion. I am a pleased Beam now

Before:

Local: /t Irradiated Kitten, no thanks but have fun
Local: Irradiated Kitten is not online or does not exist

CRAP

Local: /t lrradiated Kitten, no thanks but have fun

Now Mucho easier and better. Now if we could only get rid of people with names like xXx DeathStorm xXx.

Ugh!

This is a fantastic guide. Not only does the kerning on the default font drive me freaking nuts (some of the characters outright overlap the characters next to them), but I hate the l/I problem.

I tried both the Comic fonts and Tahoma, and I found Tahoma to be more useful, mainly because the Comic bold font was too small on mobs that I had targeted at long range. Tahoma bold is just right on my system, however.

Thanks for the guide! It gets five stars.

I have the fonts working for what I see in chat and stuff but not on PC and NPC. How can we change what others see over our toons heads? and is it possible to have diffrent fonts over PC and NpCs then what we se in chat?

(does others see the font change over your toons head? cause I have seen toons with musical notes above thier heads, would like to do something like that)
