For us, our SG is going to be playing on Justice. As the last hour approaches, we're going to all gather on the top of "Champions' Tower" is Steel Canyon. I plan on facing East and saluting the sun as it sets.

  4. It's hard to believe that although I haven't posted in the forums very often, I've been here for almost the entire time - 8 years. Wow. This is the only game in which I've made real lasting friendship. For the most part, I've loved the community - it's certainly better than any other that is out there!
So, even if I don't know you, I want to say thank you for being a part of a wonderful community that I have had the pleasure to participate in over the last 8 years.

    Thank you all!

It is far from an exercise in futility for someone like me. I may have ACCESS to the market but I find the market to be one of the least fun aspects of the game and a unpleasant near-necessity at best. So for me, good SO-focused builds are a huge help and make playing fun. My goal isn't to have the most efficient min-maxed build, but to have the build that is the most fun to play that requires the least time in the market or doing admin work. To me, that is the most efficient (for the limited amount of play time that I have).

I only glanced at the build you offered but I'll look at it closer later. Did I see correctly that it's supposed to be a human-only build?

I really like that idea and am interested in what you come up with. My play philosophy is to "play" rather than pursue things I'm not interested in (like the auction house). I am SO not a min/maxer which means that given a choice, I'd stick to SO's for my build. Of course, I'd use IO drops but hate having to not play in order to "play the market to get what you need for an optimal build". (I play games to play, not to work.) To me, an optimal build is a build that is fun and effective with MINIMUM non-play administrative time. :-)

Having said that, I must admit that most of my builds are very IO'd-out thanks to my husband who loves to play the market and min/max builds. I won't do it myself but I don't mind reaping the rewards if his work!

  8. Here's the human-only PB build my husband came up with. I'm saying that he made if for me and I'm sticking with that story. :-)

I hate the market and don't have the influence to buy purples so it is specifically with no Purples or PVP IO's. It uses 5 LotG's and 5 Kinetic Combat sets which will cost about 800m, roughly equivalent to 1-2 purples (single IO's, not sets) and less than half of a Gladiator +3. It has +45% S/L defense, 85% resistance for all but Psionic and is perma-LF,IL,EB. The build uses Musculature Alpha for more DPS and endurance.

We may wind up trading some of the S/L defense for more balanced defense and/or more DPS by slotting some procs in Bolt, RS, and IS, and take Assault over a Tactics mule.

I hate math and I hate min-maxing. I'm one of those people who practically needs to start with a template that I can then flesh out as I become more familiar with the game or the archetype. Especially with the HEATS and VEATS which can seem a bit complicated if you're not familiar with them. I'm grateful that back in I2/I3 kind folks offered to share builds with me. Helpful community is one of the reasons that I'm still here. :-) The more builds that I see, the more ideas I get.

I'm not saying that you should share your build if you don't want. However, I'd hate to see people discourage from sharing builds because you don't want to share yours.

On a personal note, I think that a forum for builds was the wrong way to go. I'd rather see a sticky for each AT within the respective forum that has builds.

(edit) P.S. This thread has some good builds for unlimited funding: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=278246

LOL That's so true. I am one of those players who hates the concept of the market and bidding on things to get "that perfect set". The husband has to do any market bidding that I want cause I just don't have the patience. It's too much like work for me to find it enjoyable... However, I'll gladly spend 2 hours in the costume creator!

I think that was what was asked for and your build and SP's build both gave great responses that using different criteria.

I'm sure that the more expensive sets can be used to tweak builds to "maximize effectiveness". *For me*, those type of builds are a fun mental exercise but I have to be able to afford a build in order to maximize it. If I can't afford it, then there's no build to maximize. :-)

If I had deep pockets, I might go with a purples-out set but my general restriction is to never plan a build using purples. If I get a purple drop, then I'll adjust my build appropriately (nothing against purples!). I just can't plan a build that requires that level of affluence.

I believe that for most of us casual players the idea is to have a reasonably inexpensive build that doesn't require that we spend forever playing the market or doing TFs just to be reasonable. That usually means no purples or pvp sets. This fits the bill nearly perfectly and is reasonably attainable with a modest amount of effort. 2 thumbs up!

Now, I'd like to see a tri-form that follows that pattern just cause I like the forms. :-)

    Player Toxicity

I've played CoH almost since the beginning and have (mostly) loved it primarily for the player community. I do agree that over the past 2 years or so, the player community has changed. Perhaps it is just perception because the loudest gets heard more often. Even so, it does seem to me that things are changing over to be more focused for power gaming and on "the things" rather than the people and interaction. Not to say that there aren't any good stories, there certainly are but we're talking community and player focused here.

I'm at best a casual player and I've never been one for end-game or for "the things" (yes, I include the whole Incarnate process as one of "the things") and it is getting harder and harder to have fun with anyone other than our own SG.

On the note of other games, I happen to have reactived my sub for that other "really big" game. Frankly, no matter which server I have been on, the community has been FAR more helpful that anytime on CoH in the last 6 month. That's discouraging.

I think what they do have in common is that (from my perspective) most of the playerbase doesn't go to the forums for the same reasons - toxicity. I think that even without a significant amount of the playerbase participating on the forums, it accurately reflects the playerbase but on a smaller scale: a few very good and genuinely helpful players who take the time to listen and actually give *constructive* criticism but the bulk being very toxic with the MO of slap first, talk second.

Judging from the responses, I am going to consider my quoted paragraph to be the reality of the situation.

I have to ask though, Rapthorne... Several hundred mmorpgs?

Yup, nutty. I like nutty. I'm not a numbers person so I enjoy playing my PB and WS solo (and as a duo) and have a fantastic time as long as I keep aware. However, I do feel like I'm the "third wheel" when playing on any team other than one primarily made up of SG members.
  15. 1. Fix all the broken things now before any more updates are added. Things like updating Keldians (photon seekers, form animation time, etc. etc etc); reworking of TFs/SFs that seem require specific team composition or strategy in order to finish in a reasonable time; fix the general inconsistency of writing (as well we game/item/enhancement descriptions) .

    2. Put all unlockable costume pieces in the character creator for all players.

    3. Better teaming window and functionality

    and one more...

    4. more intuitive base building tools and by extension, a beefed up SG admin page.

I love my Quantum Flight. Granted, it is very situational but with so many power options on my PB, it's nice to have a couple good situational ones.
  18. Great job! I would so buy extra slots to roll a couple of these!
  19. My suggestion would be for:
    Dark/Dark
    Storm/Dark
    Kin/Sonic
in that order. I've never felt that my D4 was weak and she is one of my best solo-ers.

I just change the descriptions to match the idea of the hero/villain. This is the brief bio on my Dark/Dark Defender:
"Laura Hope was once a famous Medium and Spiritualist until she made contact and began to channel the spirit of an ancient Knight in the service of Light. He taught her how to contact her Indwelling Spirit and use it for Justice. Releasing the Light of her Spirit, she takes the villainous energy of evil-doers and reflect it back onto them, bringing about their defeat. This also allows her to heal and aiding those in need. Lumin stands in her silver and black armor as a shining example of Justice."

However, I do like the idea of alternate animations.

Well, no. If you've been reading along, you know why I'm not using that name.

Great guide Bill. I've been playing triform PBs for quite some time and they are probably my favorites. However, after reading this guide, I'm excited to try my hand at an all human, a biform, and an inhuman.

    Thanks and GREAT JOB!

That would be amazing. As long as we are asking for things, I want to export my live build into Mids, do my respec, then upload it to replace my live build.

    You are correct. :-)
  24. Yup. On both m, PB and WS I keep all 3 forms. Depending on the character, I might spend different time in different forms. My PB tends to spend 1/3 in each form when on teams - I change as needed for each situation.
