Disappointment in the Update Schedule

Don't get me wrong - for me, personally, a faster update schedule with smaller updates would be fine really; they do it in DDO and its been moving like clockwork. Really a good system.

[/ QUOTE ]

Huh?!? Clockwork?!? Well, yeah, regular releases with DDO, but every last one has been utter crap which can take upwards of a month afterwards to get working! Heck, afer one release I couldn't play at all for three weeks because the lag was so bad (and I'm talking lag worse than what we saw here in the arenas when they first hit the test server, if anyone remembers that mess--only this was on the LIVE system and we got no responses from development about what was happening or when it might be fixed!)

Beleive me, I'd rather take a delay than have rubbish like that getting released.

Really? I didn't have that problem <;_;> What server are you on? I'm on Aundair... I don't play as much as some people, so its totally possible I've missed it.

... So why aren't people over their griping about bugs? <;_;> I still mostly seem the same "There' not enough to do!" whine...

People hurt my poor little brain <~.~>;

I was on Khyber (aka Lagistan) before I quit in disgust. There are serious bug issues, like the repeating repeating crossbow bug (a bug that gets fixed and reintroduced seemingly every release), connection problems, etc. The boards over there are kind of strange, too. Any complains seem to get pounded back by the fanatics--a side effect of having a game based on a well known fantasy world, I guess; it's like if you complain about the game, you're insulting their homes or something.

I feel like the interest of the Devs has waned, I feel like the end of CoX is near but know better, still, I can't help but feel down about it all.

See, all I see over there is ALOT of whining about needing more content.

Khyber does explain it though... I saw a message specifically mentioning that server in the Hotfix window. Sorry to hear that...

And no its not wrong to complain about the game as long as you're aiming for constructive criticism... my huge problem with just about EVERY MMO community is the people who whine and cry *just to do it*. They aren't out to make the game better... they just feel like they *need* to complain about something.

That was part of my reason for the original assertion I made.

In fact, I honestly can't remember a single game that came out when they first said it would hehe.

[/ QUOTE ]

Including CoH, which kinda makes me wonder what you are arguing about.

Fact is, and I don't think anyone can dispute it, the content update schedule for this game is horrendous. I come back once every few months to see if an update has come, see it hasn't and come back six months later, to which if I'm lucky there has been one.

I think many people here have hit the nail on the head, the inability to keep up said schedule draws a lot of the excitement out of the game making things get very stale, and that is on top of the ultra repetitive gameplay that gets quite stale on its own.

But I guess that was an easy oppurtunity to take a crack at Blizz....I've always wondered why so many on this forum feel the need to try and measure Cryptic up to them?

Because a great many people come on the boards whining about how CoH isn't WoW? and people tend to compare CoH's success to WoW's and thus claim CoH is dying?

Then they turn a blind eye to Blizzards own enormous failures; not to mention ignoring that WoW had a huge primed and pumped fanbase ready to go out the door, while CoH really didn't? (If it had been based on Marvel or DC sure - but independent of that not really so much).

That's why people spend so much time blasting WoW and Blizzard - because CoX gets compared to it unfairly alot. What exactly where you expecting? The update schedule wasn't always like this... not defending the current status quo - but don't act like we've always had a schedule this slow.

Ok Foo, this just made me chuckle. I mean, do you live on the same planet as me? People will complain about absolutely anything no matter the situation.

You're essentially saying, "Well, no matter what they do people will complain," but the majority of people only complain when they're getting antsy and bored, really.

Issues are big but don't forget the between-issues work. Last year's Valentines & Winter events were pretty big things and didn't have any issue associated with them. All those 'little' changes between issues seem to be coming down at the same rate, as near as I can tell. So why would the big ticket stuff be slowing down while the relatively small stuff keeps going?

[/ QUOTE ]

Hate to say it for as much as I used to hope for more events, but I'd be fully willing to sacrifice the events if it meant faster or larger Issues. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the events, but at most, they're temporary content. I'd much rather they spend a bulk of their time on the content that is going to make the game better for the long haul rather than a month here and there.

Personally, this whole thread is sort of depressing me. It's making me long for the way things were the first year of the game. It seemed like every time you turned around, there was new content coming or being discussed. One Issue would launch, and within weeks, the next one was already being talked about. Nowadays, it's just too sparse to the point where there are these huge lulls. Mostly, it's just sad that, for the first time since the game launched, I'm considering letting my account lapse for a while. I love this game and think it's one of the most innovative in the MMOG genre, but things just seem to be going in the wrong direction unfortunately.

Don't discount the events as temporary content. They're far more than that. Events are a means to try out new material and game mechanics. The Valentine even wasn't just a fun thing, it was a way to work out hero/villain team up missions. The original Halloween was a prelude to Croatoa. The events don't take away from development, they're sneak peeks at what's ahead. They are not throw-away. We have fun, they get to try out new mechanics. It's win-win.

I'll give you the Valentine's event, but the only "trying out" Halloween had was by showing off a few of the NPC models.

They do take away from development because they have to program the new scripts, make the new mobs, create the new missions, etc. all of which could be spent on permanent content. The fact that they take away from Issues can be evidenced by Positron previously stating that they choose not to add any zone events in I7 because they chose to focus on beefing up these events instead.

The pessimism is strong with these ones, my master...

Maybe I'm naive, but I genuinely think that if you're keeping people entertained, most of them will shut up and play the game. Sure, they'll [censored] on the boards while they're at work, but I really think most people prefer playing and having fun to whining for whining's sake.

"Trying out NPC models" means that they were already made for Croatoa, and they decided to (p)re-use them in an event.

So, really, while making new NPCs or missions or whatever may take up some time, it's time they're already spending towards the new issue anyway. I'm all for slagging a development team, but don't overstate things unnecessarily.

Events take some time, I'm sure, but they're important because they can create peaks of interest, and they're a good investment because most of them just use already-created resources with a little bit of mission-coding. It also lets them try out new tech, like the co-op teaming, in a non-permanent fashion.

*waves hand*
This is not the scapegoat you're looking for...

I have a question: if I got a character up to lvl 15 now and waited for I8 to come out, would i get the contact for Faultline?

With all new zones, you just have to talk to the new contacts to get em <^_^> so yeah, you could easily.

Why is it that people come on these boards with legitimate complaints, and then a gaggle of posters call "whiner!".

Hey, stop using the boards for one of thier chief purposes!

I don't know if these guys realized this, but the devs have actually actioned issues which have been vetted on these boards. The halloween event is a recent example. Also of note is that the RSF is being lowered to level 53, and villains are going to get access to the hami raid.

Not all complaints are worthwhile, but at least make that case instead of the ad hominem attack of "Whiner!"

Apples and orangutans. The issue at hand involved events like the winter event, which are seasonal and temporary. The justification for your counter argument uses zone events like SC firebombings and Lusca, which are permanent game additions (i.e, content).

What you're saying, in essence, is that since Posi stated that they didn't add permanent event content, it proves that temporary events take time from the mainline development. One does not follow the other.

All I'll add at this point is that if scrapping the "Veteran" part of "Veteran Rewards" and just releasing all of that new stuff to everybody would have allowed them to release I8 in a timely fashion, I'd be all in favor of that. (And I've been playing long enough to get nearly all of the rewards.)

People already did make the case. The boards aren't here to make the same complaints over and over and over again, nor are they here for people to use to try and bash the devs.

You just go to the contact and talk to them yourself. I don't think an old contact will give it to you, but you will get the contact if you go talk to him on your own.
