Guide to the Cathedral of Pain Trial

1. Getting Started

The CoP trial is for Supergroups/VillainGroups only. It's not possible to join it unless you're in one.

To start the CoP trial, you will need:

A Raid Teleporter, with power and control. This can be bought.

A Mission Computer or Oracle, with power and control. This must be crafted.

A Vault Room.

An Item of Power base (in the Vault room)

6 Dimensional Anchors.

A medical bay is recommended but not essential; it makes getting back in to the action much quicker.

Note that it is not supposed to be possible to fit all of the above into the smallest size of base plot. This is why the second smallest size is described in the base editor as the smallest possible plot you can have for a 'raid ready' base.

Note for base architects: The Arcane version of the Raid Telepad is slightly smaller than the Tech version, meaning it's easier to fit into smaller rooms. This DOES make a difference!

2. Activating the Trial

The trial is activated through your Mission Computer / Oracle. Once you select 'Get the Item of Power', a sixty minute timer starts. You have that long to finish the trial successfully. If you fail, you can always try again.

Enter the trial zone through the Raid Teleporter. You're now in a part of the Shadow Shard.

A maximum of 20 people can take part. The minimum is one person.

3. Breaking In

The first phase of the trial involves opening the gate to the Cathedral of Pain. Rularuu has warded the gate with three Psionic Resonators, big obelisks sending beams of energy into the sky. These are in different parts of the map, but are easy to find. Their names are Gloom, Woe and Despair.

Each obelisk has a Willforge (a big levitating cube) next to it. This is an indestructible spawn point for Rularuu creatures. The Willforges spawn more Rularuu as each group is defeated, but they don't do so instantly.

Each obelisk is surrounded by a forcefield that makes it immune to damage. Only when the attendant Rularuu are all defeated does the field drop.

The three obelisks must be brought down at around the same time (the window appears to be about three minutes). If this is done properly, the gate to the Cathedral opens. If not, the obelisks regenerate and you must try again.

4. Aspect of Rularuu

Once everyone's through the gate, it's time for the finale. The Aspect of Rularuu is here, as are three Willforges with a spawn apiece. Like the obelisks earlier, Rularuu is invulnerable while there are spawns of Rularuu present.

In brief: you have to defeat all the spawns and then defeat the AV. This thread mentions the interesting discoveries that people have made concerning the timing of the spawns.

5. Reap the Reward

When you defeat the Aspect of Rularuu, you get your IoP. You can't choose it, and once you have it it can't be sold or deleted.

Further updates to this guide will detail the different IoPs that can be claimed and their various benefits. For now, suffice to say that you must be in SG mode to get the effect of your IoP.

Note: During the trial mobs don't yield XP, but there is a big reward at the end.

6. Any Questions?

Are there any level requirements to do the Trial?
None. Any level can join, and all participants are auto-sidekicked up to 50.

Can we bring Coalition members on the trial?
No. Only members of the SG that owns the Mission Computer can go. If you want to bring help, then your friends will have to join your SG temporarily.

Weren't the IoPs supposed to be getting buffed?
Yes - Positron did mention a 'larger' bonus. We'll have to wait and see what happens with that. NOTE: Recent evidence suggests that the IoPs have possibly been buffed but the text has not been changed. More news as it comes!

What are the different types of IoP's and what do they all do?
The Monuments look like rotating globes with script on. They're the most common ones. They give one of the following:

Anger Monument: +Damage

Fury Monument: +XP Gain

Torment Monument: +Debt Reduction (this seems to reduce debt whether you are playing or not)

**Unknown Monument Type** + Psy Resistance (only seen on Test, possibly discontinued)

Monument of Iron: Mez Protection (three of these on Test gave blasters tank-level mez protection, allegedly. One is certainly enough to resist one Controller hold, though two holds break through.)

As for the unique IoPs:

Heart of a Storm Elemental gives +5% HP.

The True Furnace gives +10% Endurance and a bajillion points of Power for your base.

The One Book of Rularuu gives +20% debt reduction.

There are reports of other unique IoPs, such as an Eye that increases Perception, but these have yet to be confirmed.

Do IoPs reduce your rent?
Looks like. They reduce 'upkeep' by 40,000 for Monuments, 50,000 for the True Furnace (when last tested) and a massive 150,000 for the One Book of Rularuu. We don't yet know if this translates to a simple drop in base rent, or what.

Can you do this more than once?
Yes, but you can only earn as many IoPs as your base can hold. Hidden plots can hold one IoP. Secure plots can hold an unlimited number, though you still need an IoP base for each one, which in turn needs to go in a Vault.

Is there a badge for doing this trial?
There's no badge for doing it just the once. Dark legends tell of badge art being discovered that relates to multiple runs, but of this, it is not wise to speak.

Why am I not getting any benefit from my IoP?
Try going into SG mode.

The Monuments look like rotating globes with script on. They're the most common ones. Going from memory, they give one of the following (WARNING, this is from MEMORY):

+Damage (about 7%)
+XP Gain (about 6%)
+Debt Reduction (this seems to reduce debt whether you are playing or not)
+ Psy Resistance

Mez Protection (three of these on Test gave blasters tank-level mez protection, allegedly. One is certainly enough to resist one Controller hold, though two holds break through.)

One Book of Rularuu is 20% Debt Reduction.

o.o from Paragon Wiki:

Torment Monument

Said to be empowered by pain and suffering of Rularuu's victims, this stone perversely allows Super Group members to repay debt quicker. You may have up to 5 copies of this item.

The True Furnace

This is the True Furnace Rularuu used to construct his inter-dimensional factory cubes. Although it cannot be harnessed, the True Furnace radiates energy, increasing the Endurance of every Supergroup member and supplying power to all items in a base.

Anger Monument

Carved with the strange glyphs that scholars have yet to decipher, the Anger Monument radiates with evil power. When this is in your base, it gives all members a small bonus to damage. You can have up to 5 copies in your base.

The One Book of Rularuu

This book is said to contain the essence of the timelines that have been, are and could be. Each letter is beyond the comprehension of all but Rularuu. Nonetheless, te tiniest fragment bestows power to those who possess it. The One Book gives a 20reduction to debt incurred by all Supergroup members at all times.

<.< we just added those actually, we're going to be trying to get all the info we can and list everything in the coming days ^_^

Here, let me copy the info from the One Book of Rularuu for you to add in...

Category: Items of Power
Upkeep: -150000
Does not allow auxillary connections.

It is also amazingly cool-looking. Archimedes has posted a couple of screenshots of it on the Virtue forums, in our COP thread there. If you'd like more screenies, we'll see what we can do.

Yes, but you have to remember that there are limits on the amount of Items of Power you will receive. With a small base you can only have 1 Item of power. With larger secure base you can have a maximum of 5 of each kind of item.

o.o screenies are good, particularly oneof the right click info page. I'll probably have a thread started tomarrow asking for them for the wiki, I seem to have been volunteered for all the odd jobs.

X-Syndicate did some timing testing on our attempts on the [u]test server[u]. Assuming no changes, what we believe we discovered was the following:

Attack first forge. Wait. Attack 2nd. Sometimes first started to respawn. Noted time of respawn from first. Let say timer was 49:45 when first respawned. The first (and second if cleared) will always respawn at xx:45 if any of the other forges have been aggroed. If you stood around and did nothing after clearing the first group, it would never respawn (or at least over 2-3 minutes of standing around testing).

We were not sure what determined the :45. It might have been when we finished the first Forge kill, when we started or when we entered the AV zone. We think it was when we finished the first Forge kill. Basically, if any Forge was aggroed at xx:45, the first (and second if already cleared) forges would respawn.

SO, strategy became, Kill first spawn on left in a liesurely manner(no nukes and by taunting to pillar to avoid accidental aggro of second group or AV), note time. If first spawn finished at 50:45, begin attack on second forge at 49:43. You now have 58 seconds to clear second and third groups before first (and second if cleared) start to respawn). If you cleared all 3 by 48:45, no more respawns. If not, any cleared forges would respawn. This wasn't too hard with two blasters nuking each group in turn.

We had 3 rads on the first success and 2 on the second and taking down the AV with a group of 13 was ridiculously easy.

Again, not positive the timer was set by the defeat of first group. If you note the first respawing while on the second, note the seconds time, avoid reaggroing the first, finish second group and start over using a new timer.

We got the XP buff and psi protection in our 2 attempts.

All levels in your SG can run or join the trial and will be auto leveled to 50.

No. I found it elsewhere, but it seems the trial auto sidekicks you to level 50. Higher levels will have more powers before the autosk, but yeah, anybody can do it....seems like the xp benefit is huge too, I heard somebody who did it twice went from 17 to 19.

Okay, it's looking like the old '1% boost' from the Monuments has been well and truly scrapped. The current boost is more like 6-7%.

More info as it becomes available.

Did you finish it? I hear that there is no xp until the mission bonus, which is huge. Since there are endless spawning enemies, I believe its to keep people from farming it.

I was under the impression you could bring coalition members with you, provided they have access to your base and are raid-ready themselves?

For a SG based on RP, I would NOT want some of these items in my base.

That is correct. We got no XP until the mission was finished. ALSO, I was unfortunate enough to die during the last section (and decided to hit the base hospital), and was in the process of zoning into (I had clicked on the crystal, and it was loading) where the Aspect of Rularuu is when he went down... and I got *nothing*. So be aware that if your SG is close to finishing him off, it may be better to just lay dead on the floor until the Mission is completed.

That would be good, but I've not seen anyone say they've done that, whereas I have seen reports saying coalition members couldn't come.
