WHITE PEREGRINE, here's your 3D piece =)

Also, just curious, but do you make all these environments or do you get them from somewhere?
[/ QUOTE ]
I make my own environments. Well, I render them using 3D models I've purchased or built... but the images are all mine. I do all the arranging, lighting, and composition work to build a full scene.
[/ QUOTE ]
I've gotta say, hats off to ya. The pure amount of buildings there is astounding, especially taking into account modeling and texturing them... Heck, just arranging them would take a while.
[/ QUOTE ]
In the case of the buildings, I can't take credit for those wonderful structures - they were already modelled. They're part of a Poser set called 'Dystopia' and are available commercially on Renderosity. I've purchased a couple sets and have downloaded some freebies as they come up in the 'freebies' section.
So, for the White Peregrine scene, I pretty much just imported the models, adjusted the sky settings, and rendered. I'd estimate about 3 hours of time to set up the city... plus 2 hours for my computers to render it all out. Finally, this afternoon, I took some photos of clouds and composited those into the scene to add a little life.
wowsers !
its amazing
Very tremendous job! Grats WP
Great work there DJ! And I love the shape you gave the wings and their position, framing the top and then leading the eye down the legs like an arrow pointing to the city below. That and the tilt you gave the camera is a very nice touch. Without that tilt, the image would have fallen dead.
Great stuff!

*Writes all this down*
Still, great work though I do like how the sun goes through the wings.
Still, I wish you had used that 4th idea... I really really love the wide angle view and the angle itself.. plus, the refraction of the water possibly on him I think would have looked great.

This one was incredibly fun to do! A couple weeks ago, White Peregrine and I were talking about his piece and he had a cape on. He mentioned he'd eventually trade the cape for wings. Then, during our exchange of PMs, it was confirmed we'd be getting wings in I8... but we still weren't sure if 'angel wings' were part of the deal.
Two weeks ago, we got confirmation and I immediately PMed White Peregrine to get his piece underway. I had a cool idea I wanted to try, and he was completely open to whatever.
So, here's White Peregrine in all his winged glory.

Peregrine: That must be agonising trying to choose between such good choices
[/ QUOTE ]
it was tough...real damn tough. but in the end I went with the fourth due to the perspective. I thought it a bit more dynamic than the rest. although, I may have to have him do some of the other in the future for me...oh yes....you bet yer bippy I saved all the WIP shots.
while the final scene is different than the sketch I am still overwhelmingly pleased with the end result. like most of my commissioned pices I leave a good majority up to the artist in question. given I like the style they use I am not overly concerned if they do something different than what I thought as I know I will love the piece in the end. indeed...part of the enjoyment is just seeing what others envision versus being told exactly what to display int he piece in question.
anywho...I am definately one happy camper with this piece....and can you guess what my new desktop is and more than likely will be for a good long while?
again...thanks Doug for the hard work ya put in...very much appreciated and I look forward to getting the chance to work with you again. ~

Hm, at the risk of being branded a total buzzkill, I have to say I'm not too crazy about this piece.
I really, really like White Peregrine's costume design, as you can see it in WP's avatar. Between the angle and the lighting, you can't see it here, and I think it ought to be more prominent.
I'm not crazy about those wings, either. They just don't look right, what with the out-of-proportion enormous translucent feathers contrasting against the smaller, more realistic ones. It looks more like an oddly stylized cape than a functional pair of wings. ("Functional" being relative in a superhero context, of course, but they just don't have that elusive air of verisimilitude necessary for me to buy into a fantasy character. For me, of course.)
I am a big fan of Doug's work, but I think this piece needs to be tweaked to emphasize the cool uniqueness of White Peregrine's character.

Thanks everyone, for the kind words.
Here's a few more exchanges between myself and White Peregrine. The biggest change was an alteration in the camera's position... from a street-level view looking up to an aerial view high above the city.
WP - first round of roughs
WP - second round of roughs
WP - costume check
[/ QUOTE ]
The second WIP is really more what I'd prefer -- a good shot of the unique costume with a bolder WP in the foreground. I think really the figure just needs to be tilted towards the viewer, with the head closer, to show off that cool design.
Plus more realistic wings.

Gratz WP!
Nicely done DJ! Love the perspective, and the city!

Wow.
That's really spiffy. I can see Ironik's critiques... but yanno what? It's still a really really REALLY awesome piece of work.

The funny thing is, White Peregrine and I discussed this EXACT issue. I PMed him and mentioned that the pose he chose isn't the best for showing the costume because of the upward angle and the bright light off the shoulder obscuring the outfit's details.
His response was that the pose and lighting was more important to him. White Peregrine appears in several variants of the outfit and getting it exact wasn't a primary concern; he was more interested in the angle and drama.
So, with that in mind, I continued forward.
yup...sometimes a picture is more than just displaying the character in question. the idea being that the viewer "knows" who is being pictured...as such seeing the actual suit design is not a priority. in this case the pose and "feeling" is.
are there better options for displaying the actual symbol and showcasing the suit? sure...but I wanted something different and something that Doug was interested in trying out.
as such, any ritiques regarding perspective on this piece fall ta me....as it was ultimately my choice. a choice by which I still stand as it is what I was looking for
that said...dont be surprised if you see another version of whiteperegrine from Dog in the not so distant future. given we have some posibilities for different posing worked up that is a step we can basically breze through......
...of course this is assuming Doug is willing to work with me again in the future ~
