Are people starting to see GvE in stores now? I called all of the Wal-Marts in my area again today and those that didn't leave me on hold for 20 minutes still don't have it yet. The only salesperson that had any clue what I was talking about said to try back tomorrow or Wednesday and maybe possibly they might potentially have it. Or not, he doesn't know.
Funny thing is, if this had been implemented correctly, the majority wouldn't care. My issue is not with Wal-Mart as a corporate citizen, I leave that to those who feel more strongly about it as is their right.
My issue is that it was advertised for release on the 29th. We were later informed that for the first week it would be exclusive to Wal-Mart. Okay, not so bad, I outlined the options earlier in this thread. But then Wal-Mart "runs out" as noted. I don't even mind waiting an extra week. Doesn't really bother me. EXCEPT, the only card I have is Mastercard. So if I want the items (which I do) I have to get them from Wal-Mart (which I can't). THIS is a problem, and needs to be corrected. Or at least addressed.
An official update on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the 3 Wal-Mart Supercenters in my area, and none of them had it. The folks working in the electronics section didn't know what it was, but an employee at one of the Wal-Marts didn't know what City of Villains was either, and they had *that* on their shelves.
I work in retail myself, and employees not knowing about a new product before it comes in really isn't that much of a surprise. However, when something is advertised as an exclusive where I work, most of us at least have an idea of what that thing is, and the people working in our electronics area have at least a passing familiarity with the titles we carry.

I will give them a few days to locate an answer...sure it won't matter by then, but I would like to know someone who matters opinion, even if it's, "wow...that sucks for you guys". Obviously I'm not beating up the devs or suggesting they are the problem, but if I was them and had posted this would be available a certain date and it wasn't...I'd be miffed.
I know if I was Jack Emmert's neighbors kid and played CoH, I'd wait till he got out of his car and commence with the interrogation:

I hope you can see this at the end, but how do we get the in game stuff, do you have to buy the gvs.e pack or can you buy it on the nc web site.

I was thinking about this...perhaps this is exactly what Walmart wanted to do. You enter the store, head over to the electronics department(usually in the back of the store, past everything) looking around with little assistance from their nonexistent help. After 10 minutes of fruitless searching, some mouth-breather who works there gets bored checking out the 13 year old girls in the childrens department and see's you and figures, "hey, he looks like he might be shoplifting...or into kiddie porn", so he comes over to start a coversation with you.
He asks what your looking for, you tell him, he drools some more and responds, "Never heard of it". Now you've looked for 15 or 20 minutes in this hole of a business and get angry. Then you spot the 1st season of "Gargoyles" for $40 and say, "I'm not leaving here empty handed!"
It all makes sense now. Sleazy marketing tactics.

You paid $40 for the first season? What a rip-off. I got it for $20 at a store well known for overcharging people for movies... Anyhow, back to topic. I too spent hours going to the multiple WalMart stores in the area. I had a guy that I showed him on my phone where it said GvE was a WalMart exclusive and would be out on the 29th. He searched everywhere and did everything he could to find it and came back empty handed. He opened unopened boxes just to see if it was one of the things waiting until Tuesday to unpack and hit the shelves. No such luck. <sighs>
While I'm willing to wait, I just wish I could know when I have to wait until. Will my WalMarts get it in tomorrow since that's new release day? Or are they totally behind and will I have to wait until next week or the week after? I really do want the box edition (because when I change computers or do a reformat, the DVD would come in real handy), and I like tangible results for the spending of my money. <shrug>

I dont think that would be wise, unless you dont care about the money. I doubt the Euro codes would work here.

That isn't a release date, that's when Wal*Mart usually gets games. I don't think anyone knows for sure when they'll turn up in stores.
(I had to work very hard not to type that as " if they'll turn up")
I didn't say it was the release date. WalMart calls Tuesdays New Release Day for their entertainment section. I know it was an honest mistake, but please read what I say before assuming I'm spouting random release dates...
I really should have bought it from walmart.com before they went out of stock... <sigh>

o.o no worries, the european code and box set are cheaper than the US ones. the box code probably wouldn't work though, but it'll be interesting to try!

I really have to question the wisdom of this Wal Mart exclusivity deal. Aside from the complete screw up that the release has been, I don't think this was a smart decision. How likely is your average Wal Mart customer to play MMOs? I would submit that they are far, far, less likely to be into MMOs than people who shop in places like EB Games and the like. Just because Wal Mart has a wide reach, I don't think its really going to reach the sort of audience that is interested in MMOs.

Going with the usual distribution to all retailers (Best Buy, EB, etc.) would likely have gotten the game into a lot more new players' hands. Wal Mart is a big retailer but apart from "soft" titles like The Sims, how much do they sell to the more hardcore MMO player? I've never bought a game there, myself.

Well, uh, good for you I guess. But the point is not that no one ever buys an MMORPG from Walmart, but that people are far more likely to buy MMOs from game stores.
I mean, the Walmart I went into had a game section that was dominated by Barbie and Dora The Explorer games. Somehow, I think they're aiming at a different demographic than EB and the like.

Oh, absolutely. But I'm not a hardcore MMO'er, and I don't visit game stores very frequently. The first place I personally saw CoH *was* Wal-Mart, although it was a review in some magazine that convinced me to pick it up.
And I would imagine hardcore gamers go to Wal-Mart as often as anyone does, so Wal-Mart's not an inherently *bad* place to sell games. It's just an awful choice to use as an exclusive distributor, for the reasons everyone's noted here.
If Wal-Mart was a reliable distributor for games or software, then it wouldn't have been nearly as bad a decision, simply because there are Wal-Marts in a lot of places where there just aren't game stores. But I think it's such common knowledge that Wal-Mart sucks when it comes to reliability or timeliness that it's hard to imagine anyone with a brain having anything to do with the GvE exclusivity deal.
