Inking practice!
is Jim around? I'll ask him if it would be ok if you inked the drawing he did of Apollon.
I'm pretty sure he'd be fine with it, I've got several of his already in queue and already talked to him about it
Well if he isn't:
Lord Apollon
LA: Make sure you contact him and get him to send you a high res scan :P I mean I could do that since I talk to him often but that's your job hehe

Jim is away visiting his grandfather who is ill. I think he said he'd be away a week or two. It was in here.
Just finished pep rally's pic It looks pretty nice but I think I might do more ink shading lines... but I'll have these 3 scanned and posted tonight.
I now realize I have a TON of crap you can practice on.
Look in here or here

Okay got my scanner fixed YAAAAY!!!
Here we go! Please don't look at the big versions as you will see lots of tiny little mistakes :P *jedi hand wave*
(Btw tomorrow I will edit it so the original pencil versions are up side by side)
First up, Leopard Queen - Jim Tessier ( Original Pencils ) ( Big version )
Then we have Slate - Pep Rally ( Original Pencils ) ( Big versoin )
Finally, the one you've all been waiting for, Rowr - Jomaro Kindred ( Original Pencils ) ( Big version )
So... please honest and direct feedback is highly appreciated!! I know I have a -lot- of room for improvement here.
Some things I learned about inking:
You can do straight lines if you move your hand fast, but you lose precision.
You can do precise lines if you move slow, but you get some jitter.
Fast quick strokes while drawing the outline is generally not a good idea as you get little 'bumps' where you lift your pen and again where you pick up the line.
It's better to pick up your line somewhere where you already drew not where you stopped.
Never ever 'pause' with the pen on the paper. Big bubbles! Always lift up at the end of each stroke.
Don't go overboard with ink shading! It'll make it look bad.
Anyway... Please critique!!!!
*sits and waits for the thrown tomatoes*
Nice work! You get better and better!

Oooohh, I love them Rowr! I think you did an especially good job on Kindred's picture. So far nothing stands out to me as being off, but then again, I'm very inexperienced.

Quick pencil. That's amazing. I could work for weeks and never come up with anything that good. The degree of talent around here never ceases to amaze me.
Nice work Rowr! You get better every time I see your stuff.
Your inks are nice too:P

Awesome! I know I enjoy inking works and they are definitely great practice to help you improve your own drawing skills. Personally - I am not a pro in the least. But I usually start off with a smaller pen line than what I want. This way I can go over the line later and smooth it out to get rid of the jittery/jaggy lines. It won't be perfect, but it will look better. I also tend to add my own line weight/variations at that point. Not to mention that it will make your inks blacker and less faded, as they can be in some areas. I hope that little bit helps!
Makes me really miss my ink pens! Oh well, my tablet and PS will have to do for now.
Hope you're having fun! Keep them coming!
I just have to say, Rowr.. Those look awesome!

That's a good-looking character there!
At this point, I imagine you're still learning, so you're basically tracing with careful thought, and still getting a feel for the brush/nib/whatever you're using. Now's a good time to starting thinking about what inking is, and how you do it.
The trick with inking is that you're essentially trying to add weight and depth to an already existing drawing. So to do that, you've got to take a look at what's there, and then plan accordingly.
First thing to do: find the light. This is really important for eyes especially, as you'll want to keep the highlights that add depth. I bet the damn ink just soaked into the paper when you tried to do the eyes on Leopard Queen, right? Frackin' hard to do small places.
Anyway, find the light. Remember that you'll want to make lines a little thicker on the side opposite the "sun".
As well, inkers generally try to make lines a little thicker towards the bottom of the page to add weight to the scene. Whether on purpose or not, you did this a bit, so that's really good!
For example, with the first image, if you take a look at her crotch area, you've got some hatching on Jim's original piece, and then her bikini. See how on inked one, the bikini area pops out and has more depth and weight? The thickness and hatching of those lines actually subtly improves on the pencils.
That's good inking, and I suck at it. Kudos to you! Feel free to practice on any of my pencils if you like, too.
This is only practice for you, Rowr? I dont know about anyone else, but it looks to me like you dont need any inking practice. Great looking stuff!
Ok, Jim replied to my PM saying it was ok. I'll see about getting a high res scan.
Thanks Foo Yes I'm still learning where and when to add thicker line weights. I have a general sense of how to do it, but it's the tiny little subtleties that might be escaping me. I imagine it is something that comes with practice. What I'd really like to do is take a pencils piece and ink it and then compare it to a "professional's" inking, and see what I do different and what they do different etc. Inking hair is really hard! :P
But I'm gonna work on some more pieces today, I've still got several in my queue
So, Jim? Pep? Jomaro? Your thoughts? I'm really eager for some good in depth feedback.
I'm just loving how after inking it, it REALLY makes the image 'pop' on the page compared to the pencils. I know these days that a lot of folks just take their good clean pencils into photoshop, and play with the levels to have it "inked" that way. But I'm really liking manually doing it. I can't ink very well or very fast in photoshop quite yet, I don't have a tablet so I have to use the mouse, setting up paths and fills etc, it takes me 10x as long to do a line that I can do in one or two strokes of my hand.
But it's fun
Maybe I can apprentice myself to an established artist or something :P hehe
