Inking practice!
From the limited inking I have done on my new tablet, I have found some of the same difficulities you described with doing it by hand. Go slow you get some jaggies, go fast much smoother but impercise. What I have been doing and seems to work ok for me (I tend to draw in a very short strokes so not great at long sweaping lines) is using paths and ajusting pressure, fade etc for long lines, then hand drawing small fine details using the tablet. Drawing by tablet with the nib I have feels kinda like a felt tip pen.
But I am very inexperienced but this is what I have discovered so far.

Yep, that's a good way to do it.
The thing where you use paths and adjust the fade is the method that I think leads some people to poo-poo digital inking as too mechanical looking. It's a great technique if you're doing modern-looking comics, though. The way that I'm doing it is I'm just using Pressure Sensitivity for the Size Jitter. So it looks more hand-inked. Of course, it's just like inking with a pen, so my hand steadiness is an issue. But then there's the master tool that one doesn't get with a pen...Undo!
Like I said I use a combination, I do use pen pressure and tilt with the tablet for short lines and fine details. I only use the path method with very long sweeping lines if I am making them very jittery.
And looking too mechinical< i know exactly what you mean. The 1st ps inked item I did before I got the tablet (I still have limited inking experience) and looking back at it compared to the one I am now doing with the tablet there is a hugh diffence. The earier looks way too clean and kinda cold.
good job on inkin

Okay everybody! FOUR days until my vacation! Today is about the last day I can take inking submissions, for about the next 8 hours or so while I'm at work and can actually print them out (no printer at home!! ). Sooo.... if you have some good nice clean pencils, BIG versions, high res very much preferred, and have the artist's permission, I'd love to ink them! I -PLAN- to get most if not all of these done while I'm on my vacation next week, but we'll see how much time I have. Better to have too much to do than not enough and get bored, right?
I went through this whole thread, my PM's, and my emails, and I -think- I got everybody, including a few extras. But again let me know if I missed you!
Current Inking queue:

And again, open critique is welcome and appreciated!!! Don't be afraid to get mean and picky! If I don't know where I'm messing up then I'll never be able to fix it. Jim, I'm going to re-do those couple ones I did already, hopefully much more to your liking!
Sooo... post, PM, email me away!
So tell me what you think? I tried hard to make it look as if the light source was coming from the bottom right... but might be easier to make that happen with colors.
Yeah... a lot of the times if it seems like I'm 'missing' lines it's because I feel that it would be better off color shaded instead of inked shaded. I guess I need to figure out how to ink for inking's sake, and how to ink to prep for coloring.
I think it looks fine...some shading may have been my fault to begin with. I'm only a beginner when it comes to drawing. And I know what you mean with leaving things out for color, I do it when I sketch since I know I can add it when I ink, but for inking I'd say add what you feel is necessary to make the piece pop!
Only 2 1/2 more hours to go before I leave work and lose access to printing!!!
So get your piccys you would like ink posted or PM'd or emailed to me quick!! Anything after I leave work will have to wait til I get back!
Okay! I'm home! My queue be final for now!
Thanks everybody!
Bump....don't want ya to lose this thread Rowr.
Awww thanks. I haven't had much chance to work on ANY of them while I was in Cali, and I've been crazy busy since I've been back. Hopefully things die down soon and I can get back to work!
Don't consider it work or you will never fininsh anything. It should be for fun.
shiggitybump!
Soooooo When are you back to the inking moede Rowr?
You are good at it and I am sooo looking foward to see what you do with my pencils.

try using different mediums to ink (i dont suggest softwear, inking is organtic).
[/ QUOTE ]
It depends on how you use it. If you have a Wacom tablet and tweak your brushes correctly in Photoshop, you can make it as organic as if you were using pens and brushes. Actually, if you control the fade correctly, it will have MORE of an organic look than technical pens. I'm helping a buddy ink his comic book right now, and he wanted a classic European style to the inks, but he wanted it done in Photoshop. It took me a little bit of messing around in the brush menu, but I got it to work for me. So I'm not using any of those digital inking tricks that give work a mechanical kind of look, I'm basically just drawing with my tablet.

Exactly my thoughts! I find that I can ink much better using photoshop. Now I don't have enough for a tablet yet which makes my inking a very long process but I plan on getting one in the future. Anywayz, with photoshop it really does take a LOT of tweaking with the brushes to get a good outcome. I change the brush between every stroke to fit the line perfectly. Take me even longer to ink because of it too. I'd like to try traditional inking but I don't think my hand is steady enough.
