The ongoing problem with "l33t"

ok, so i see it all the time on all the boards at one time or another. this whole problem with leetspeak and how ridiculous/redundant/annoying it is. basically, i think its more bravado and personal pride that makes people use it(remember how happy you were when you could finally effectively speak pig latin?). the fact that a good majority of us dont know/understand/type leet is more a sign of the changing times and the accessibility of the internet to everyone. which of course goes right to denoting how the majority are not "Elite" so of course would NOT know l33t. those who do know it, use it, and find it insanely entertaining...well, that doesnt necessarily make you elite either. it just makes you more willing to sink the time into learning a new "language". id be just as happy learning japanese or german or something actually conversational. but thats me.

at any rate, there was a post on another thread leading to a wikipedia page. but it was about a person and i thought it might be interesting to see if wikipedia actually had a reference for l33t...and boy do they! so, for your approval/entertainment/annoyance, i submit this link, start this thread, and hope someone finds something interesting in all this mess.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet

enjoy!

ps. also, "elite" ppl should try to bear in mind that a good portion of us newcomers are not trying to steal or use your style by attempting to use l3375p3@k.....we just cant typos...so that pk, was actually supposed to be ok....i just cant get my fingers to cooperate sometimes

The main problem with l33t is that because of it, the world is facing a potential shortage of '3's. With the overuse of numbers in regular words, we may even run out of '1's and '4's.

I find l33t to be one of the stupidest things I've seen in a long time. Like back when kids thought it was cool to let your pants drag down on your @$$ so your underpants showed, or the Spice Girls. The instant I see someone using it is the second I realize I'm not too interested in communicating with that person as my opinion of them goes into the toilet.

Hey now, about the Spice Girls...

'What do you call a Spice Girl with two brain cells? Pregnant!'

That's a joke I heard one of them tell on Jay Leno's show while they were still popular.

I never really cared for their music, but I really appreciated that in the height of their 15 minutes of fame, they always seemed to be aware of what it was--15 minutes of fame. They milked it for what it was worth, and moved on.

I wish more bands (and even solo artists) were like that and didn't take themselves so seriously. After all, when it all is boiled down, with only some very rare exceptions, they're merely entertainers to make my morning drive to work a little less tedious. Nothing more, nothing less.

All those kids were acting in solidarity with the "Working Class" by wearing pants that mimic the special attire of plumbers. So it was really a political statement . . .

And the Spice Girls were the greatest musical artists of the modern era . . .

And l33t speak is a demonstration of the superior language skills of the intelligencia . . .

[And this thread really belongs in the player's guide section . . . ]

Leet's interesting. It's the world's first exclusively typewritten thieves' cant. Because of leet's unique nature, it's easily archived and preserved, which has given it an unnaturally long lifespan, not to mention slowing it's rate of change. I wouldn't be surprised if leet becomes a permanent addition to first-world culture. The article notes that it's already crossed language barriers.

Wikipedia rox0rz!!

Nice read, but waaayyyyyy to much info. I'll stick to basic English.

I don't mind 133t so much. It's relatively easy to read with the right state of mind (relaxed and detached, almost meditative), though it strikes me as too much trouble to actually type over real English.

The problem is the people who use it. Not satirically, mind you; I found "I will r0XX0r your b0XX0rz!" damn funny. I'm talking about people who literally think they're communicating with it. I find that once you get past the pseudo-jargon, they actually have nothing useful to say* or are simply stupid.

There, I actually came out and said it. It's not 1eet; it's the morons that use it. 133t doesn't make you stupid. Stupid makes you speak 133t.

Countdown to post-deletion begins now.

Aren't you using leetspeak yourself in the above quote? And I don't mean when you used the word "l33t"

Wechs.

I really don't find it to be much of an issue at all. Haven't encountered a single player who used it more than once or twice for the sole purpose of a joke. Now drunk typing is another story altogether, i've seen my fair share of that. Pinnacle FTW!

I find leet *funny*.

I'd never use it in a serious conversation; and if someone tries to use it in a serious conversation I admit; my opinion of them does go down the tubes fast.

But for just pure "WTH" factor; it can be funny.

Just ><; well, if you ever meet 'T3H R1K70-FR34K" in CoV >,< you'll know what I mean. He talks in l33t. I mean like... when you beat him up his *CLUES* are in l33t ><;

You'll have to see it. Its great <x_X> (and for talking in l33t; he's somewhat eloquent. For a bonehead.)

I nearly fell out of my chair when I fought that Rikti Freak. I was laughing so hard at how the devs integrated 133t into the Freakshow class. It kinda makes sense in a way, but I think it was more for the entertainment factor than anything.

yeah, dont i know how that goes. i didnt mean to start this thread as an attack on anyone who uses it, but rikti freak is a good example of how l33t has really become a mainstay of our culture, and not just the gaming community. figure it all started with programmers and computer-savee(sp?) types. but its really kinda branched out like a malignant tumor and grabbed a hold of the entire internet community as a whole, weaving tendrils through message boards, online games, and blogs.

i found the wikipedia info stunningly informative..almost too much so, but was far more impressed with the fact that there really is so much information about it. a syntax and usage and what have you. it really has become something more than pig latin ever was, which was something to do as a goof. l33t has actually become its own language.

now mind you, im not attacking but im certainly not endorsing, either. i personally tend to find it rather arrogant of the people who do use it. sort of a "@r3n7 1 5o 5up3r10r 7o u!!11!!"(which took me a good 2 minutes to figure out how to type) snub. but, of course, to each there own. im sure they feel that way because they do know how to use it and use it well. much the same way i tend to feel snubbed by the people who speak fluent other languages and i always fear theyre somehow speaking about me in front of me....

wow...what the hell kind of inferiority complex do i have??

anyway, glad ppl are enjoying this thread. thanx for all the great input

If you mean the @$$ thats only because the word *rhymes with bass* would probably be cesnored out. But you do have a point. In the future I'll modify my way of "speaking" to avoid having to do that.

But l33t is still stupid.

I have yet to meet any black person that takes ebonics seriously. And yes, I'm black. I must have been absent that day in school.

The thread in all leet is as easy to read as this:

I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae.

The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? Yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt! If you can raed tihs, yur'oe ameswoe.

Do you understand what I'm saying? After having acquired a sense of the language(English or whatever you want to call it), you can read it in any form. The same would be said for leet, because while I do not write in leet, I have been in the atmosphere of said language and thus I can read it without ever having to attempt it myself.

That was actually pretty easy to read tekkamen, and 1337 SP34K haters are probably people who prefer to roleplay instead of pvp, but they once tried it and after someone pwned them they typed 0wn3d n3wbl4r, and thats why you people think its dumb. U gotta be 1337 in order to use 1337 speak so that u dont sound like an idiot, and if you are pwned after using you are the n00b.

hmm....interesting...uh...outlook, i guess. curious though the form of attack. shouldnt it have all been done in l33t to prove your superiority? clearly, we are all the n00bs since we either dont bother with it, or dont care to get involved with people who do use it since, more often than not(and yes, this is generalized stereotyping), they have a certain aire of arrogance....much like you do.

regardless of all that and personal squabbles and whatever else, the mentioning of people who do or dont engage in the PVP aspect of the game....i fail to see the corralation(sp?). what does wether or not i play other players or spend more time playing the game as its been designed have to do with anything? and what does PVP have to do with l33t??

perhaps im just uneducated, but it really seems like a bit of a stretch to go all that way off topic just to poke at people who dont fight other players, enjoying instead to co-op play and run the designed storylines.
